So it's been known for a while that Dead or Alive: Dimensions has a gameplay feature similar to Super Street Fighter IV 3D that lets players perform move inputs by selecting them from the touch screen. But unlike SSFIV, which limits the player to four attacks, DOAD is going nuts with the feature:
Dead or Alive: Dimensions
Game » consists of 4 releases. Released May 24, 2011
Dead or Alive: Dimensions retells the story of the Dead or Alive saga, adding new playable characters and more features in this handheld debut of the Dead or Alive fighting game franchise.
I'm trying to wrap my head around this.
That might help beginners to the series learn the movesets, but that's the only use I see for it. With the exception of a couple throws the commands is Dead or Alive are not hard to do.
seems more like a indicator to help pull off moves rather thana quick select. like the bottom bar in training mode
Played it for a bunch today, You can't switch it off for online, but I don't see how it's at all useful seeing as the fights go so fast.
Might be useful if you can customize where the move inputs are on the screen. But... What are those odds?
It's called "Poor Game Design". That, or it's just a way to make sure you can truly play the game with one hand. After all, she kicks high.

It's funny you say that, because training mode appears to use a different screen entirely
That's not training mode. You can switch between the move list and move info at any time, even when not in training mode. The list automatically scrolls to whatever move you're doing, making it very easy to see what combos you can do. If you want to, you can also lock the list so it doesn't scroll on its own.
EDIT: I hate Giant Bomb's text entry field. That paragraph is not a quote.
