A handful of Dead Space 2 add-on packs went live on Xbox Live Marketplace the other afternoon, adding some powerful weapons and armors with unique bonuses. If you’re the type of guy who doesn’t mind ponying up real dough in exchange for this kind of stuff, it looks like you’ve got several equally appealing packs to choose from.

But as is typical on Marketplace, there's not a lot of information about what you're actually getting in these packs. Luckily, GameFAQs user “Vickers Zombie” put together a list of the contents of all three packs, all of which are available for 400 Microsoft Points and weigh in at a hefty 108KB a piece according to a Destructoid news posting [meaning all this content is likely already on the game disc. Ugh. - Ed.] . At a glance, I’d probably grab the “Supernova Pack” without a doubt, but the ”Martial Law Pack” and the “Occupational Hazard Pack” are almost as enticing.

  • Bloody Flamethrower (increases damage 5%, reload speed 10%)
  • Bloody Javelin Gun (increases alt-fire damage 5%, reload speed 5%)

  • Forged Plasma Cutter (increases damage 10%, reload speed 5%)
  • Forged Line Gun (increases firing speed 5%, alt-fire damage 10%)
  • Forged Ripper (primary fire lasts one second longer, increases alt-fire damage 10%)
  • Heavy-Duty Vintage Suit (increases damage 5% for Line Gun, Detonator, Contact Beam)
  • Heavy-Duty Line Gun (increases reload speed 10%, damage 5%)
  • Heavy-Duty Contact Beam (primary fire charge reduced by 0.1 seconds, damage increase 5%)
  • Heavy-Duty Detonator (increases reload speed 10%, damage 5%)
  • Agility Advanced Suit (10% increases to Stasis duration)
  • Agility Rivet Gun (increases reload speed 5%, firing speed 5%)

  • Agility Pulse Rifle (increases reload speed 5%, firing speed 5%)

Occupational Hazard Pack -- 400 Microsoft Points
  • Hazard Suit (5% increase to Stasis duration
  • Hazard Line Gun (increases alt-fire damage 5%, reload speed 5%)
  • Triage Suit (10% medpack bonus)
  • Triage Javelin Gun (increases damage 10%, reload speed 5%)
  • Shockpoint Suit (decreases Stasis recharge 5%)
  • Shockpoint Ripper (primary fire lasts one second longer, increases reload speed 5%)

In case you just jumped on the Dead Space bandwagon with EA Visceral's follow-up (dude, it's really, really good, right?), note that the Dead Space series never shies from micro-transactions. The original had a decent assortment of stuff to pick from, while the very recent iOS release offers Power Nodes at a premium.

I was looking at these last night, wondering what they were. Now I know I won't be buying them!

#4 Posted by Wiseblood (646 posts) -

Will these work in hardcore mode?

#5 Posted by 234r2we232 (3181 posts) -

Buy your way through a game!

Thanks, EA.

#6 Posted by JeanLuc (3586 posts) -

Not interested. Its just breaks the game.

#7 Posted by ReverendGodless (3 posts) -

Is this available for the PSN, too, or is it just for the XBL Marketplace right now?

#8 Posted by Undeadpool (4948 posts) -

Seems alright if you're into that sort of thing...not that there's anything WRONG with that!

#9 Edited by scatterbrainn (38 posts) -

is it just me, or is the instant availability of all this DLC a total bummer? let people play the game first, jesus. and it's on the disc. wonderful.

EDIT: that said, this game is amazing thus far.

#10 Posted by Krakn3Dfx (2492 posts) -

So this is stuff that isn't available at all in the game, or just stuff you need to play through to unlock.

That's a lot of stuff to just not be in the game.  I guess none of it is essential tho.

#11 Posted by voltan (103 posts) -

It really bums me out that PC isn't getting any DLC. I bought DS2 for PC because I had the DS1 for PC. I still enjoy the game but this kinda stuff just leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

#12 Posted by Evilsbane (4621 posts) -

If hadn't literally just finished the game I might have something to say about this but, the game is fucking amazing so whateves.

#13 Posted by Vager (1654 posts) -

This stuff seems stupid...
Isn't this just stat boosted weapons and armor that are already in the game?

#14 Posted by Brake (1100 posts) -

I guess this stuff did well the first time around since they're doing it again? I just don't know why you'd buy any of that mess.

#15 Posted by spazmaster666 (1968 posts) -

Honestly I'd be surprised if EA didn't release this type of DLC considering what they did with the first Dead Space.

#16 Posted by mrsmiley (1115 posts) -

So I bought all of these packs, not really knowing what they were, but knowing that it's Dead Space. *gives money up blindly* The first time I got to a store I was completely overwhelmed, and now I think I'm going to attempt to disable them (if possible). I now have like 6 weapons instantly available to me, along with tons of suits that boost everything. It essentially breaks the initial experience of the game. I don't know what I was supposed to have before getting the DLC, so if I can't disable them, I'm going to end up with a different experience than those who played it normally. SUCK.

Sick of this nickel & dime shit. I've paid full price for a full game. Not 95% of it! FULL PRICE = FULL GAME, SCIENCE DAMN IT!

#18 Posted by Napalm (9020 posts) -

Fuckin' come on, guys. If you're going to hold and release this crap, at least wait like, a month or two before putting it out there. Releasing the game and pulling a, "lol pay for stuff already on disc," just puts a sour taste in my mouth.

#19 Posted by hermes (1495 posts) -

Just to let you know, those updates are likely not in the disc...
It is not new content (there is no new graphics, sound fx are the same, etc). It is just tweaks in the stats, something that can be done with very little data.

That been said, I don't understand how people could buy these things. Most of the new stats are not that much better anyway, it is not like it unlocks a god mode, it just gives you small advantages that doesn't make the game that much easier...

You're getting the the full game, though.  This is basically just EA selling you stat boosts to make the game easier for yourself if you so want it.

And yes, that's still shady as all fuck, but it's not like the game is any worse if you don't buy them.  In fact, I'd go so far as to say that not buying any of these packs is playing the game the way it's meant to be played.
#21 Posted by Kazona (3070 posts) -

Anyone that buys this is an idiot in my book. Come on, people, the content is on the damn disc. You are just being duped into paying for unlocking that content.

I don't get society. They bitch and moan about the sales practices of companies, yet they go out in droves to buy the very thing they complain about.

#22 Posted by dvorak (1497 posts) -

I understand your want to get the information out there, but an article about an article about a forums post is kind of lazy.

#23 Posted by DukeTogo (1504 posts) -

I don't really have a problem with them offering this stuff, my issue is with the amount of information in the description of the shop.  It tells you nothing about what it is you're getting for your $5, and that's bullshit.  The packs for the first game had such information, but this is downright actionable asking people to buy this.

#24 Posted by Tennmuerti (8123 posts) -

wow ...

#25 Posted by PhatSeeJay (3322 posts) -

Getting so sick and tired of everyone venting their opinions on micro dlc. Shit's not going away and if you don't want it just don't fucking buy it!

#26 Posted by MisterMouse (3554 posts) -

would these help in hardcore mode?

This is for pussies

@mrsmiley:

So are they free in game? Are the suits any good stat wise and do they work in Hardcore mode?

I hate to say it guys but I tried Hardcore last night, I died two hours in and I was
discouraged. I want that acheivement and this may help me get it a little easier.
#29 Posted by MannAlive (155 posts) -

Anyone who buys this is part of the problem.  And everybody hates you.

#30 Posted by jonnyboy (2920 posts) -

Hey it's EA. Move along.

Hardcore mode dude.
#32 Posted by fozzyozzy (52 posts) -

Unless there's a suit that returns the plasma cutter to a point of righteous anger then no sale for me.  I wanna one-shot necromorphs again :(

If you think you didn't get 60 dollars of value playing Dead Space 2, then you made a serious mistake in purchasing it.  It's not the company making the error, it's you.

I'm exhausted of hearing people complain about unlock codes.  When you purchase a game, you purchase a license to access content, which is defined as the retail product.  You don't have ownership of the content on the disc, you have a license to use it.  Some parts may not be covered in the retail purchase, and it makes no sense to force downloads when it can easily be packed on the disc.  If the content you got with the retail purchase was not a good value, then you should not purchase the game.  Period.

Complaining that there is additional content for sale is absolutely inane and infantile.
#34 Posted by Fearbeard (831 posts) -

No thanks EA....

#35 Posted by Alphazero (1536 posts) -

The only DLC weapon I'd pay for is Lemon Gun.

No, they are only available via DLC. And yes, there are some great suits and weapons with good stats. The reason I'm disappointed is that these completely change the experience when you first play through the game, as you go from a guy with a single cutter to a walking soldier of death by chapter 2! I'm assuming they work on any mode you play through on.
#38 Posted by Sammo21 (3297 posts) -
@Wiseblood:  yes, you will just need to make your way to a store to retrieve them.

Interestingly enough, the hacker suit that I unlocked from the Ignition game I still have to purchase for 20,000.  I decided against it.

If they had included a suit that had more inventory, and took less damage, I would have bought it. because it would have been less annoying.  What they are offering is minor stat tweaks that mean nothing to me.

@fozzyozzy:

how were you one-shot killing necromorphs with the plasma cutter in the first one? Unless you were playing on easy mode or something...or you know some type of super shot that I am not aware of!

@MildMolasses:
I thought that these suits actually offered like 5 more inventory slots or something like that as well? Regardless it's still pretty pointless to pay for them.

Me too. But they make more money this way and in the end thats all that matters. EVER.

Just because content is on the disc, or distributed through a patch, does not mean you're entitled to it. It doesn't even mean that it was developed and cut in order to be sold as DLC!
#43 Posted by Kordesh (227 posts) -

Or you can buy none and not support this kind of crap. I know I definitely won't. EA will never learn.

#44 Posted by allgrinzz (161 posts) -

The most amusing part about this is.. imo,  that the guy who was on the live show with giantbomb on justin TV mentioned this specifically, about DLC being on the disk and being ready..  and hating it just like the rest of the Giantbomb crew did... and yet.. here we go, stuff on the disk, 108 kb unlock key to get your toys.  "God i hate when devs do that!"  *laugh*

#45 Posted by hpv (177 posts) -

Why do people continue to complain about content like this being on the disc? If they're going to charge you for it either way isn't it better to be on the disc when possible (like when it's finished before the game goes to press)?

You're not gaining any value by having the data delivered separately. You're also not losing any value by it being on the disc if you don't pay to unlock it. In neither the case of the game, nor the additional content, is the value proposition changed by altering the delivery mechanism.

#46 Posted by delorean99947 (228 posts) -
@mrsmiley: It would be useful for that hardcore mode with 3 saves.
#47 Posted by bybeach (4846 posts) -

I don't understand this, on disc or not. It's a suberb game yet they need to do needledick stuff like this. Wow.  I guess the airline industry is the inspiration for this one...

This game will be beat with the tools they provide. When the dlc with the extra campaign stuff happens, thats when I see the hook. Or rather,  just see the bait.
#48 Posted by MerseyM (3 posts) -

Their decision to withhold DLC from the PC has pissed me off, though this sort of crap I'd do without anyway.

#49 Posted by Walorski (4 posts) -

Don't like it?  Don't buy it. These add ons are just made to be slight improvements you have to pay a little extra for, they're not required for the game.  Whatever gives the devs more money that you personally don't have to pay for is good in my book.

#50 Posted by Woodroez (344 posts) -

I am also angry that they offer extra content. Wait, what?
