Sound beacon?

i keep hearing this strange sound beacon whenever im outside exploring space\ inside exploring a ship. it sounds like its trying to lead me some place, but i cant get a fix on the fucking thing? am i chasing ghosts here or does anyone know what the hell im talking about?
