Maybe I'm out of the loop when it comes to video game novels, but when did they start getting actual writers on board with these things?
Brian Evenson is a helluva writer and has a pretty respectable track record of published works outside of video game inspired novels (though he's also written a short story based in the Halo universe and an Aliens novel.) He's currently chair of the literary arts program at Brown university.
It's been years since I bothered with any novels along these lines, but back then it was largely the work of hack authors providing bits of lore for rabid fanboys.
