Not a revolution, but a perfection in survival horror. 2

Distress call from a mining ship in the deep recesses of space. Everything goes haywire upon arriving. Silent protagonist. The opening moments....With these clichés, Dead Space seems to be on the track of mediocrity and will be summarily forgotten, right? Well, thankfully, no, because Dead Space does enough on its own part for it to be set apart from almost every game of 2008 as one of the best games of the year, horror or not. Playing as Isaac Clarke, a silent engineer, the player will traverse...

Great game, but avoid the iffy port 3

I picked up Dead Space for the PC last year after a very favourable review on this very site. Being mostly a PC gamer I decided to get the PC version of the game. While I had a great time with the game there are some issue that would make me recommend the console versions of this game to the PC port.  Dead Space is a survival horror game with a very familiar premise. You arrive at a space station on a routine repair operation only for everything to go very wrong. I'm sure you've heard that befor...

    Perfection in a nutshell 0

Games can be great in a number of ways. They can push forth new ideas, ones that will manifest themselves as staples for years to come. They can strike a chord with players, generating unforgettable moments. Or they can take what has been done before, and do it better. Dead Space falls into this last category. It borrows the best ideas from some of gaming's landmark titles, and combines it all into a shooter that gets as close to perfection as any game could hope to do.Dead Space doesn't even tr...

You'd definitely hear me scream in space 0

EA has decided to buck the trend this year; a company so used to spewing out sequels is now concentrating on starting new franchises, and EA Redwood Shores latest, Dead Space, has all the ingredients to become another big hit. With an animated comic book and animated movie already released, the markers have been firmly set; now it’s time for the game to deliver. So far, it’s on the right track. So few survival horror games throw you into space to fight aliens, that’s normally action territory; a...

    An evolution in survival-horror 0

Dead Space is not just another Resident Evil clone; it is more than that. Yes, it may feature gameplay mechanics which are standard for the genre, pioneered by The Godfather of survival-horror; however, there are more than enough innovative, well-designed and well-executed features in Dead Space that not only allow it to set itself apart from the competition, but, also, to possibly rival it. In Dead Space, you play as Isaac Clarke, engineer and on-board systems specialist, who has been sent out,...

You'll be dead in space quite a few times - and love it. 0

Dead Space was one of those games that I heard about at E3 this past year, and was kind of unsure of.  I saw the same thing I had seen in a lot of recent games - a horror themed shooter with good graphics and a little girl creepily singing "Twinkle twinkle little star".  I kind of shrugged it off.  Then I started seeing actual game play footage, some of the features like zero gravity areas, and realized what Dead Space really was.  This is the next evolution of "survival" games, which for me rea...

An immersive atmosphere meets pure brutality. 4

ProsAwesome graphics. Nice enemy variety that keeps you rigid. Incredibly immersive thanks to having the HUD built into your character. The story, while somewhat weak, has great storytelling. Yes, I just contradicted myself. Everything is brutal. From crushing your foes with the heel of your boot, to kicking a mutated baby. ConsReplayability is limited due to mostly linear pathing, and a consistent amount of backtracking. The story ending left me unsatisfied. The string of cliff-hanger endings ...

A conventional shooter with an unconventional atmosphere. 0

EA’s Dead Space can be immediately perceived as a collaborative meshing of styles and gameplay concepts. The setting and atmosphere are more than reminiscent of Doom 3, while the third-person camera placement and over-the-shoulder combat practically radiate Resident Evil 4 and Gears of War’s influence of the third-person shooter genre. The comparisons drawn between these games are certainly valid, and what results is something that transcends the games from which these concepts are derived. ...

Dead Space is an unforgettable ride from start to finish. 0

These days, EA is known as the company that does nothing but put out annual rehashes of its profitable franchises, such as Madden and Fifa. However, Electronic Arts has decided it wants to get rid of that image, and the way it wants to do so is to put out a number of new IPs. Dead Space is one of those new games that will likely turn into franchises, and it hits home. It's a sci-fi horror game that reaches unbelieveable heights. The Ishimura's crew has seen better daysDead Space puts you in cont...

October is the perfect month for this game to be played! 0

A couple podcasts ago, I mentioned trying out Dead Space Extraction on the Wii all for about 10 minutes. Now we know it’s a prequel, but since I never had the time to play through the original game that came out a year ago, I figured October is as good of a month as any to have the bejeezus scared out of me. This game delivers, released for the Xbox 360, PS3, and the PC….Raw scale says, 9/10. The Good – A well told story in the sci-fi/horror realm. You play as an engineer(Issac) that’s part of...

In space nobody can hear you scream, in Dead Space however... 2

Dead Space, one of the most surprisingly succesful games of 2008. Virtually no hype was centered around Isaac Clarke's perils among the Ishimura and when it finally came to be, it blew the critics and survival horror fanatics away in a giant stream of blood n dismembered limps.Dead Space is far from revolutionary and in fact isn't all that unique either, but it still manages to give players an incredibly horrorific journey with its gameplay managing to hit perfection with how its all executed.It...

Has everything you’d want in a survival horror game 0

The spooky deep-space spaceship genre sci-fi horror theme is a niche one in which only a few movie studios have decided to take a crack at.  Event Horizon and Pandorum are two movies that come to mind.  Now, EA wants to get involved in it, but wants to tell its story through the newer entertainment media known as the video game.  If you are a fan of those types of movies, this game should definitely get you excited, because you can now experience the story, but now with an active approach, as op...

    The modern horror game. 0

Synopsis: Dead Space is one of the most successful horror games to come in recent memory, because it lives-up to its horror heritage. This is achieved through a satisfying and quite interesting combat mechanic, but more importantly, an excellent audio and visual design that greatly compliments the setting. Although far from being innovative, not devoid of flaw, and suffers from some repetition, it is a successful amalgamation of solid mechanics that uplift it into an experience that is simply s...

A truly great accomplishment, Dead Space pioneers in futuristic survival-horror. 0

Oh no! Space is dead. And no, I don't mean that as you stare into the vacant skies of the night and see no movement, that the seemingly static quality of the galaxy is greeting you, even though there's always a black hole or red dwarf lurking in the distance that your fiendish eyes may not perceive without the aid of a telescope. It appears that there's death in space, but Death in Space wasn't as catchy a title, so they canned it and went for something less literal and more snazzy. But oh yes, ...

When the boxart for a game features a dismembered hand floating through space and a Mature label in the corner, you should have enough confidence to know that something like Dead Space can't go wrong.  With the huge lineup of big name franchises hitting shelves this holiday season, it's a no-brainer that a game like Dead Space will fly under most folks' radar.  It's an original IP from a company that usually does little to nothing well over the years with original IPs.  It's a survival horror ga...

WOW, what an amazing game! This is definitely one of the best games out there. I'm not a fan of many horror games but Dead Space's presentation and gameplay made me love it just as much as other horror games like Resident Evil 4 and Bioshock. The first thing that instantly grabbed me were the beautiful graphics and in-game HUD. The game looks terrific and it's filled with lots of detail. The ship's levels are eerie and dark in some spots and bright and colorful in other spots. You can sense the h...

Much like one of Dead Space's necromorphs after meeting the business end of a plasma cutter, I am torn. I really want to love Dead Space for its brilliant graphics, brutally satisfying combat and creepy atmosphere. But I also want to berate it for its generic plot, repetitive structure and overall predictability. You see, the plot really is a bit rubbish. Stop me if you've heard this before: You are Space Engineer Isaac Clarke, Isaac Clarkeon a mission to answer a Distress Call from a Big, Adrif...

Dead Space successful does what it sets out to do: It creates an original, atmospheric experience that is built around keeping you on edge through every step of the game. The pacing in Dead Space runs parallel to its presentation, it's perfect. At the start of the game you are literally thrust into the clutches of a massive mining shuttle that you are investigating due to a total communications blackout and your ship is pulled in by a seemingly unknown force. Upon the shaky landing, you and your c...

A new Survival Horror Franchise arises 0

I played this game just a few months ago,  and was absolutely blown away. I bought it initially thinking "Okay, another survival horror game, I'm in for a mediocre story, with some fun game play elements." How wrong I really was. Upon the booting of the game, I found the menus even intriguing. I checked the controls, and managed my settings since I like Subtitles on games, and then navigated my way over to start the game.   As the game opened, I had a feeling the immersion was going to be more t...

This year, we really haven't seen many survival horror games. The latest one was Silent Hill: Homecoming, and it was a pretty good game. Everyone seems to be waiting for Resident Evil 5 (which I don't think is survival horror, but an action game), but if you have the money, you must check out Dead Space. It is one of my favorite games this year and a fantastic survival horror title. The story is that Isaac (protagonist), and some fellow crew members are going to the USG Ishimura to fix what they ...

Dead Space starts out with you and 3 other people, and your ship crashes. You soon find out that the place you landed on is infested with a crazy zombie beast and you have to kill them and get out of that place! This leads to one of the weaker points of Dead Space, the story. The story is OK but we've all seen this before. I would love to see a horror game that doesn't involve zombies. Sure, this game is one of the best horror games I've ever layed eyes on, but still, I want a new horror storylin...

The Next Best Horror Game is Here. 0

There is always a lot of risks involved when introducing a new series to the world. The first reaction most people will have is 'this game is a lot like…' We are skeptical because most gamers want to play something they know will be good. When Dead Space was announced, most people claimed 'this game is a lot like Resident Evil in Space' and while that a fair assessment, when you actually start playing, you notice that this is a very different game and a good one at that. The plot behind Dead Sp...

Dead SpaceWhile many new games try and rip off the highly-acclaimed games of the past in an attempt to be as popular as them, the knockoffs typically end up failing regardless of how similar they are to the source material. There are also certain concepts that have been done to death now; such as time manipulation. Yet there are games which have shown us that even overused game mechanics such as time manipulation can still be used in a fresh and innovative fashion, e.g., Braid. Dead Space has a...

A simple yet great story, Brilliant Execution. 0

Of course this review as every other one is subjective to the point where my experiences with games differ from yours, but hear me for a bit.  Dead Space is a survival horror game that actually progresses the story in every chapter, has very small sections of the game that would be considered to be meaningless, and weapons are inventive.  The enemies of the game are fun to fight and are presented well as monsters we should fear.  But people give it a bad rap for making the game sound like a comp...

Here's the link to a video of me being terrified on deadspace. Not only are FPS games not my strong point (like not being able to figure out how to shoot) but the boys seem to think making me play scary games is funny. It's good entertainment to watch me freak out :)Deadspace itself is a perfect combination of action and suspense, it grips you whilst making you cautious of your surroundings. I would really recommend to anyone who is into horror games!...

Welcome to the USG Repetitive. 5

If Dead Space was 2 hours long and cost $5, then it would've been a great game. Instead, what EA Redwood tried to do was stretch the game's base ideas to the point that it became a 12-15 hour hike. EA's definitely succeeded in that respect, but the end result is a game that constantly recycles its ideas and concepts to the point that repetitive becomes a massive understatement. There's also a lack of genuine, original ideas, which doesn't give Dead Space a strong sense of identity. That's not to...

    Can't repair a dismembered heart 0

Dead Space : EA’s brand new Survival-Horror franchise. That statement feels like a lie. Story : Dumb. Okay the story of Dead Space is that you’re on some kind of mission to go to this spaceship. You and your dim-witted crew discover that everyone’s been slaughtered by some kind of monstrous species and now must find a means to survive. The first thing I noticed about Dead Space is that the voice-acting is bad (and not in that Resident Evil hilariously bad way but just bad), the characters are u...

    Dead Space 0

Dead Space is a perfect example of how I like the survival horror genre.  Creepy at some parts, but overall not too spooky, so I know that the games entire purpose is not just to scare me.  The innovative weaponry in the game (only one "weapon" actually is supposed to be one) certainly adds to the game.  The game would not nearly be as fun with ordinary point and shoot weaponry.  The idea of dismembering the enemies to not only do extra damage but slow them down, is phenomenal fun.  I mean, who ...

In Space.... This game is good 0

Dead Space is polished to a brilliant shine. The production values are simply top notch. That includes the art, graphics, sound design, etc.  Like all good horror games, the developers payed as much attention to sound as they did to the visuals and it shows. For survival horror fans, there is a lot to like in Dead Space. Much of it borrowed from other successful games in the genre like Resident Evil, Bioshock, FEAR, and others.  Luckily, they also nailed some pretty interensting and unique combat...

Dead Space is a great game. I regret that its strong M rating and relative lack of publicity might let it go on forgotten like other great single-player adventures, like Beyond Good & Evil or The Darkness. I hope the great reviews keep it fresh in peoples' minds. I want to see more of this universe.Anyway, let's get to it. The storyline of Dead Space has been seen before. It's essentially the same as Alien. This is a good thing. If Aliens is getting a game, Alien should have a game to repres...

Space marine? Nay, space engineer. When I look at a game like Dead Space, I find it hard not to be reductive. The setting is in space, the hero is equipped with plasma weaponry and an alien infestation needs taking care of; that description alone should resonate with anyone who has played a sci-fi shooter in the last year or two, and for good reason. Despite the cliché first impression, it became hard for me to count similar games on one hand. I played this expecting a derivate product and ended...

It was tell well spent because I was able to become a bad ass Engineer ( Issac Clarke) and Sever the limbs of my foes. It’s one part Resident Evil 4, one-part Aliens, and a whole lot of awesome.    The story of Dead Space starts long before Isaac ever sets foot on the Ishimura in a series of comics, a prequel movie, and an online adventure. The underlining gameplay elements in Dead Space are pretty simple. It's in essence a third-person shooter in the vein of Resident Evil 4 or Gears of War, and the controls feel just as smooth and streamlined as any other third-person shooter. The missions are pretty straightforward as well as you are moving from one point to another and thanks to a nifty in-game guidance system, you'll never be uncertain of where you need to go.
