Edit 20th December
Well, Deadly Premonition won Most Surprisingly Good Game.
"Deadly Premonition doesn't seem like the kind of game that would be good; it has dated graphics and poor controls, but it also has an incredible, over-the-top story and more memorable moments than anyone would ever expect from such a game."
Deadly Premonition
Game » consists of 11 releases. Released Feb 23, 2010
An open-world action-adventure game following an eccentric FBI agent as he investigates a series of bizarre murders in the small rural town of Greenvale.
Deadly Premonition - 4 Nominations @ Gamespot GOTY Awards
"Most Surprisingly Good" is pushing it. Just how terrible can you expect a game to be for Deadly Premonition to qualify as "good"?
Well without having played the game myself, I have watched both endurance runs though, Deadly Premonition definitely seems like one of those games were everything except the gameplay works. Sure the dialogue is corny as hell, but it has its charm, and yes it's definitely a minor rip-off of Twin Peaks: the setting and some of the characters are taken directly from Twin Peaks.
But some of the music is kinda good/catchy, it has some crazy moments like the sandwich scene and the dialogue is nuts at times, but Deadly Premonition is not a game I would play myself... ever. But if they have had just a bit more money and time and some better gameplay DP definitely would have been an awesome game. I kinda hope they would do a sequel and poolish a couple... no lets be honest a lot of things and they could have an awesome little game.
But if it should get nominated for anything then Best New Character and Most Memorable Moment are perfect nominations for this game.
Also this:
I can understand the funniest game, memorable moment & new character nominations, but it just shouldn't be nominated for most surprisingly good game. Whatever way you look at it, that game is not good. Sure it has a certain charm that makes it very likeable, but it is still a bad game. If it were "most surprisingly enjoyable game" then sure, that's the perfect category for the game, but most surprisingly good game? No.
i look at it in the way of i had a great time playing it. was freaking great." dont understand why people try to insist that their view is what everyone else should go by.
i dont like FPS but i dont tell people black ops is a bad game no matter what way you look at it.
just a stupid thing to do.
on topic, Grats to Deadly Premonition.
As painfully flawed as the game was it was an interesting game but a fun murder mystery story and great characters. Emily was one of the most realistic portrayals of a woman in any game I've seen.
" Should have got a nominee in best sound track. The music in that game is shit. "fixed.
I kid. I love the soundtrack. Whoever it was that put together that unofficial OST a while ago, props.
It feels like people are just jumping on the DP bandwagon now. Sure it was a funny endurance run and the game certainly has some sort of merit to it but having it in their GOTY nominations seems a bit silly, it should have got a honorable mention or something. I hope GB don't do something similar.

" "Most Surprisingly Good" is pushing it. Just how terrible can you expect a game to be for Deadly Premonition to qualify as "good"? "Kevin liked it quite a bit. 7.0, good. Considering how people were assuming it was total shit, I think that qualifies as "surprisingly good".

No. "Depends on how much you dig the concept of an old school survival horror open world game. If this was released in 2000, it would be considered a cult hit today. I know it's not a legitimate argument for the game's case, but it is unique and interesting.

" "Most Surprisingly Good" is pushing it. Just how terrible can you expect a game to be for Deadly Premonition to qualify as "good"? "To be fair, the expectations for this game were absolute zero. But also, it's still not a very good game in that the part where you are actually playing it (the other 80%) seems like it would fit in as a post-Resident Evil 4 budget title for the PS2. And Monday Night Combat deserves that award far more, because it's actually a good game. Otherwise, sure, I guess it deserves the other nominations.
