...In case anyone missed the tweet:

Hello everyone! Please vote it. Thank you and I love you all. "F.K. in the coffee!" http://g4tv.com/videogamedeathmatch/battle/8/

As it stands right now, Alan Wake has 80% and Deadly Premonition only has 20% of the votes... Will we really allow this to continue?!

This was a thread title I couldn't not click on, but looking at this poll I do think Alan Wake is actually the better game.

Alan Wake is a great game, but I personally enjoyed DP a little more. Alan Wake became tedious to me after the first hours of gameplay.
I'd like to vote, but I don't recall having a G4 user account... I'm sorry, Swey!

A: G4 can sod off and die.
B: I haven't played AW, but when it arrives some time this week I fully expect it to be a much better game than DP. Don't get me wrong, DP is funny and weird, but at some point one needs to give credit where credit is due.

It is and incredibly atmospheric shooter, but don't expect much more than that or else you will hate it -- as many people I know that have played the game.

Alan Wake have sold 781,718 copies worldwide so far.
Deadly Premonition have sold 106,387 copies worldwide (including an impressive 5,805 in EU's first week, since it was just released there) so far.

Sadly the competition won't do much good for SWERY I'm afraid. :(

So I signed up just to cast my vote. It worked for me but there were at least three other comments where someone voted for DP and it registered as a vote for AW. I really don't care which one wins but it's kind of lame if AW is victorious through buggy means, even if it would have had more votes anyway.

rorry21: oh wow this isnt even fair alan wake was way better than dp i played both and had both i sold dp and i STILL play alan wake its an amazing game dp had horrible graphics and wat! dp does not have a better story than alan wake u should slap ur self whoever said that alan wake had one of the best stories i have ever seen! alan wake ftw!!

rudderless: Alan Wake has better graphics, Deadly Premonition has better writing, a more open world, has more to do and is infinitely more inventive. Also, York is one of the year's most interesting protagonists. Wake was just a moaning, arrogant dick.

I like that defending DP takes at least modicum of rhetorical ability. If you took out all the votes of people who only played one of those games, I wonder how it would balance out? I played AW right after DP, and while AW was entertaining, it doesn't really have that "more than the sum of its parts" feel that DP has. I liked individual elements, but the experience as a whole wasn't nearly as cohesive with its thematic content.  (Also ArchScabby, your presence in the DP forums has become almost comforting.  If there isn't a thread in here that you don't post in, I'll be worried.)

Dammit, this is true.  I even bought Alan Wake full price without really knowing what it was just because I knew they were trying a more narrative-based game and I support that sort of thing.  Whatever, this poll isn't going to mean anything.  People should definitely buy both in my opinion.

Plus AW needs a sequel and DP needs... if not a sequel/prequel, another SWERY game.  Vote with your dollars!  I even bought two copies of DP to make up for the $60 I spent on Wake...

Played both, Deadly Premonition is a better game in every regard except for graphics and of course controls.  Note that I didn't say gameplay, DP had it's issues but I never died because an off screen enemy behind a tree I cant see through was hitting me with throwing axes.  However I also lack a G4 account and since at least a third of the people voting for DP end up with Wake votes anyway I think I will pass on making the effort.  Hopefully Swery will let me slide on this one, maybe I will go to his bar and play some darts to make up for it?

It's okay, I'm sure SWERY understands.  It's the thought that counts, right Zach?

Good point on the distinction between "controls" and "gameplay", though.  Huge difference.  DP has some great gameplay, it's just so tied in with the narrative that people get it confused with "story" and "atmosphere".  Gameplay isn't just interface and aiming systems, it's whatever it is that makes a game a game- and DP has plenty of those elements that really add to the overall feel of the experience.  Finding a plate of smoked salmon on a bloody toilet is gameplay.  The one sequence where that music plays- gameplay.  Running into Ushah at the Milk Barn and listening to him talk about potato chips- if that's not gameplay, I don't know what is.

Sorry SWERY, but I'm far to lazy to create an account for a website that I don't visit just to vote for Deadly Premonition.

Edit: OK so I changed my mind. I created my account and voted DP. I just couldn't live with the guilt of letting SWERY down.

Deadly Premonition destroys Alan Wake in terms of story and characterisation: I would be embarassed if I were Remedy. On the other hand, the technical proficiency of the graphics and more solid shooter mechanics are strong positives for Alan Wake. However, I still feel that Alan Wake's mechanics aren't quite good enough to make up for its terrible stab at Stephen King pastiche. That said, it's still a decent game and has great atmosphere, it's just a bit of a disappointment.

So I think AW won, big surprise.  But that was just a minor skirmish in a long-term war, in which DP will emerge victorious.  Honestly, ten years from now, I don't think there's any question of which game will be remembered more fondly.  Even if it's just the fact that DP actually has hardcore "fans" willing to go to absurd lengths to expound on their love of the game, while AW mainly has "people who played it and generally liked it".

Now, while I wouldn't kick either game out of bed for crackers, there's only one I'd invite back to dinner.  Alan Wake, I enjoyed the brief time we spent together, but you were definitely a one-night stand (not to be confused with the Stephen King novel).  Agent York, on the other hand, is welcome to crash on the couch any time.  (Seriously, which sounds more enjoyable: Talking about 80's flicks and punk rock with York or listening to Wake read from his godawful manuscript pages?  Yeah.  I thought so.)
