I had an unfortunate encounter in 1-1 with a black phantom last night. I almost had him but one too many of my blows got blocked by his tower shield.

I then thought, OK we traded bodies, I'm coming after you. But I invaded another guy and, on his last breath, he left...  (btw, the dark silver is a MUST, he cast banish after banish to no avail!!)

But on second thought, I understand him. EVERYBODY in 1-1 who is on NG and above, runs around with a huge amount of souls. So you will always receive 30k souls for successfully invading there.

--> So, in theory, a good spot for soul farming! But I'm sure a lot of people will do what my host did...

Although I haven't tried it in pvp, Blind sounds like a good sidearm vs. shielded enemies.

The Blind and the Moonlight Sword both ignore shields. But, if you study the vids, most pvp builds don't even carry shields.  I suggest carrying the Dark Silver mainly to avoind getting "corner banished", b/c that costs a soul level just like an environment death!

But what I am coming to accept is that I will start running silver cat left hand, two handed weapon right hand, cast light weapon and then hit triangle. Although I'm a Dex build, the bit of extra damage definitely comes in handy.

In parallel I will work on my dual katana skills. But that will take a little longer :)

Here's a guy who's fairly successful with an estoc and a shield, as well as a war scythe.  He goes up against dual katanas and a halberd (EDIT: and a meat cleaver).  After poking black phantom Satsuki to death (with a shield, spear and wearing nothing but a helmet, like a gladiator), I have doubts about going unshielded, unless I have a long range pole weapon like the war scythe.  BTW, I'm trying to build what the strategy guide calls a "weapon master."  High End, Str, Dex.

Good find, but how does that first guy manage to hit him with the DBS w/o breaking his guard? And whats with two handing katanas, do they even scale with STR?

If you check the triforce guy in my original post, he uses the roll attack of the meat cleaver really well. And the area attack (where you stick it in the ground in front of you). He is also really good at non lock. In the end those things matter more than your equipment. a) that you know it and know how to use it. b) that you have speed and skill.

While I still have trouble with turtles right now (see yesterdays encounter) I feel strongly that I will come out on top in the long end. My weapons and skill will increase. Their shield maxes out at some point.
