Destructible Cover

Concept »

Destructible cover is an increasingly popular gameplay element in shooters, uniting destructible environments with cover mechanics to discourage overly defensive play. Just like you, that piece of concrete isn't going to last forever.

Destructible Cover is defined as anything that the player can take cover behind that can also be destroyed by being worn down by bullets, or a single shot by an explosive weapon. Destructible Cover can be in a game even if the game does not have a first or third-person cover mechanic. For example, Battlefield: Bad Company has the highest amount of destructible cover in any game to date, even though it has no cover mechanic. In Bad Company, players are able to destroy most of the enviroment, which includes reducing an entire building down to a few slabs of concrete and support beams. The earliest use of destructible cover in games is in 2D shooters, most notably Space Invaders, which has destructible barriers that the player can hide behind. Deployable cover, such as in the Halo universe, can usually be destroyed. An example of this is destructible cover in the form of shields that must be destroyed before the player can damage a shielded enemy.
