Just started the download myself after TF2 updated with a load of items (oh yeah, did I mention more hats?)

Looks to be about 8.5gig or there abouts, so even people with slower connections wont struggle to get this within a week now.

Just started my pre-load, never did it before, kinda weird to have files on my computer that don't work until tuesday.

Pretty bummed that I have to wait until next week before it unlocks, though. Why can't we get a Friday release date?

Does preloading essentially mean you can download the full game locked until it opens when Steam says so?

Precisely.

Going to be a huge release, game of the year contender for me more than likely.  I have been playing a little of the prebuild cause I got tired of waiting and the game was already awesome at that stage.  I can only imagine it has gotten even better with fine tuning.

I don't know how it works, but I can imagine that not being particularly easy at all. Steam files are strange and getting around stuff like that would be hard. Wouldn't be surprised if a small element of the game is missing that is critical to it running.

I've never heard of this happening yet, so I imagine that indeed there is a critical part of the game not quite in there yet.

@N7: It does happen in VERY rare cases that Steam cracks are released early for certain games. This usually however requires the game to be played offline (you really dont want Steam knowing that you're playing) and a cracking group that really has no care for the industry. Most cracks are released afterwards simply out of respect for the developers

I love the smell of pre-load in the morning. My modem has been on the fritz all week, but I got it swapped out yesterday and now my speeds are back where I need them (otherwise I'd be DLing the pre-load until Monday at least).

I got a real good feeling about this game. The Monday embargo is a little worrisome, but I keep seeing game writers make positive side-comments on twitter and whatnot.

normally, when you preload new games from steam, there is no execute file. so you can't play. the same thing goes with Deux Ex HR. there is no EXE file or launcher at all. (even no config file folder, extra). it's not hack. when something is missed, you can't just play.

Downloaded ultra fast for me, was stoked.

Cannot wait

I'm waiting for reviews to buy it.  Hopefully they come out like the day before or something, so I can still get 5 dollars off (If the reviews are good)

Almost all games come with some sort of updater, so that until the official release date, the game is missing several crucial files needed to play that would be pretty much impossible to crack in yourself.
