I've finished the first mission. I'm not really getting drawn into the world. Is this a game where you immediately get into it, or does it take a few hours? Thanks.

How much more time should I give this game?

I was unimpressed by the first level it gets Much better, aside from some ...weird voice acting and the lips not moving I had a pretty good time with it, I pre-ordered it and I was very skeptical of it, its not the best looking, playing, or sounding thing out there but it Feels like a modern Deus Ex and well...that is good enough for me.
Give it at least till the second mission.
If you aren't enjoying it by then, there is no hope for you :P
Give it a second chance. There are a good number of games that I was about to give up on that I gave a second chance and wound up liking.
Mass Effect, for instance. The first five hours were terribly boring to me, and I finally forced myself to play through and by the end thought it was worth the money to get the second game.
If you find yourself any more than seven or eight hours in and you still aren't having fun, then it probably isn't the game for you. Still, give it beyond the first mission. I've only played it for about two hours and can't wait to get back in, but the beginning of the game severely underwhelmed me.
EDIT: Although, the voice acting is B quality at best and downright horrid at worst, and Adam Jensen's voice sounds like he has one less emotion than Marcus Fenix (pissed off and... pissed off) and it almost feels like the developers only begrudgingly allowed you to go loud. It's like they wanted to make a straight stealth game. It's still possible, but ammo was stupidly limited for me. I think at least some stealth is going to be necessary later on.

Those games usually takes a while. It goes from "oh god I can't take it anymore" to "holy fucking shit!" right around the first 3rd of the game, or at least that's how the first one was.
@mike828: Wait until after the second mission. By that point, most of the main game mechanics have been introduced to you, and you're left in a big open cyberpunk hubworld to explore and enjoy.

Don't have sex with Danny Glover without a Lethal Weapon.
If a game can't get you interested at all within the first hour, I think it's failed for you as a source of entertainment; get a refund or switch to something else.

I enjoy you as a person.
I get where the OP is coming from. I finished the hostage mission before going to bed, and I walked away a little "meh". I see a ton of potential there and think it's going to get good, but so far it's all been a little dense. I watched the tutorial on hacking twice for instance, and still really don't have a good grasp on the mechanics. I want to play stealth, but found it very easy to be spotted and felt like I needed to reload and try again instead of just fighting. I also hate the fact you have to recharge a meter for a stealth takedown. If there's two guys in a room and I take one out silently, I shouldn't walk up behind the other one and be magically unable to choke him out until I eat a candy bar. I know it's going to be great, but there's been some awkwardness for me so far. Sorry about the wall-o-text, by the way- can't do paragraph breaks when posting from my iPhone.
If you have several guys in a room it's a good idea to plan ahead a little bit. So if you want to take out 2 in a row quickly (both with melee takedowns) juice up beforehand and go in with 2 battery meters fully charged.
Otherwise stun gun or tranq rifle are your other friends.
Thanks- that's basically what I ended up doing. It's learning all those odd little quirks that make the game flow better that I'm still struggling with. I'm looking forward to it all clicking.
Okay- accepted and received a ton of sidequests in the first hub, got lots of XP and started upgrading Adam, and it's definitely feeling a lot better.
For the first 4-5 hours I was in a mood like "This was a mistake." After that I started to do some side-quests, got some augs and got use to the UI and gameplay. And that is what is really important getting used to how the game works and understand how the UI works. And after exploring you feeling pretty accomplished about the secret pathways that you find.

I'm hoping this is what happens to me too. I feel like I'm not quite getting the "flow" of the gameplay. I'm also not crazy about going full stealth, but the brute force method seems a little nerfed (at least in the beginning). For the first 4-5 hours I was in a mood like "This was a mistake." The speech upgrade that allows you to read people's personality, eye upgrade for looking through walls and level 2 hacking have already made it a lot more fun to stealth around. If I were writing for Screened, I'd say I'm feeling like a preternatural badass.
I'm starting to get really into it. Kinda blown away by the different approaches to every situation (outside of the boss fights). I can totally see this being a 40 hour game for me because I'm covering every building inch by inch. I've been sneaking around the Detroit police Station now for probably an hour. Just trying to cover all the floors and pick up everything. My inventory is already full!
What I love is how the game is really rewarding me for whatever choices I end up making. I never feel punished or ripped off for spending that extra time snoping through some apartment complex. It just sucks that with such a well crafted story with so much time spent on art design/products/ebooks/etc., having emotional conversations with NPCs is so ridiculous looking.
After playing this game for 12+ hours, I think it's time to quit. I made it to Singapore, but the combat sections are getting repetitive for me. I am dying a lot, even on the easiest difficulty setting. This has been one of the most frustrating games on xbox 360 I've played.
My strategy of picking off guys one by one doesn't even work. The guards are positioned in such a way that you won't last long doing this. There are also way too many guards for me. I also have trouble with robots.
I rented from Redbox, so it's not like I'm throwing away $60 by quitting. $4 rental fee for 2 nights seems like a good place to cut my losses. If I had bought this game, things would have been different. Maybe I would have been more patient when it comes to the guards, resulting in less deaths.
