The upcoming Deus Ex 2 reminded me of something.  I will never speak of Deus Ex in public again.  I was telling my friends about Deus Ex at my high school's senior picnic a long time ago.  I said, "Deus Ex is really good.  You should buy it."  to one of my friends.  A group of girls behind me thought I said, "Gay sex is really good.  You should buy it."  I've never been more embarrassed in my life.

Teenagers make fun of names News at 11

Its one of those names where you can't win, like Uranus.

Its either 'gay sex' or 'do sex'.

#4 Posted by Ryax (4630 posts) -

maybe you should pronunciate better. because when i say dues ex it doesnt sound about like gay sex

#5 Edited by billyblaze (63 posts) -

I approve of you referring to it as Deus Ex 2.
I do not approve of you referring to Deus Ex as "really good"; doesn't really do it justice.

So you even out.

#7 Posted by Prolix (188 posts) -

Its obviously the 'day' that people thought was gay.

Dew-es Ecks.

May not be right but its easier to say and people know what I'm on about

#13 Posted by jtt02 (28 posts) -
@Adamsons:  I'm from the south and it still sounds like I'm saying it due to the way people talk here.  And it makes it all that worse that they thought I said gay sex.
#14 Posted by Ryax (4630 posts) -
@jtt02: when i say it with a southern accent it still doesnt sound like gay sex. have you ever thought that you may have an impediment?
#15 Posted by jtt02 (28 posts) -
@Ryax: Say it really fast with a southern accent.  Teenagers are always in a hurry when they talk.  And we may be thinking of different southern accents.

Seriously? Fuck what stupid chicks think about it. Anyone educated ought to know this:

"Deus Ex Machina" (pronounced day-us ex, mach-ee-nah) means "God from machine," and was a theatrical device used in Greek theatre to conveniently wrap up the plot of a story. By introducing a certain "God" lowered down by a system of ropes and pulleys (machines), the God would rectify any loose ends left in the play and bring about a swift and easy conclusion.

The title "Deus Ex" is a reference to "God from machine," which is intrinsically tied to the plot of the games, and makes for a really damn good title. Fuck stupid chicks for not being cultured in my opinion.

This guy hit the nail right on the head.

Also I'm pretty sure gay sex is good if that's what you're into, you probably shouldn't buy it though since that can get you into trouble with the law and then you become George Michael

@jtt02 is an awful name.
#29 Posted by Slab64 (1036 posts) -

I thought this was going to say something about how Deus Ex doesn't translate into something meaningful in English (god from...?). Turns out it was a great deal stupider than I thought.

The "upcoming" Deus Ex game, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, is the third in the series. Deus Ex: Invisible War was released in 2003.

I know Invisible War was bad, but thats just harsh.

Are you six years old or something? Its a very creative name when you look up why it was called that.
#35 Posted by YoctoYotta (541 posts) -
I had a similar experience once at a bar asking a friend what his favorite game magazine was.
#36 Posted by Psykhophear (932 posts) -

According to John Romero, he said that Warren Spector wanted to name the game Deus Ex because he wanted people to mispronounce it 'do sex.'

(Deus Ex is short for Deus Ex Machina- The God in The Machine)

This is completely correct. Those girls should've known better. How they manage to hear "gay sex" in Deus Ex is beyond me as well. They probably exactly understood what you had said, but decided it'd be funny to laugh at you. They're teenagers. They laugh at stupid stuff.

This is what happens when you stop teaching Latin in high school.

#44 Posted by VilhelmNielsen (1733 posts) -

It's latin. And something that I thought they taught in high school. Maybe you've used it in an english class or something. Does Deus Ex Machina ring a bell?

#45 Posted by Cwaff (1259 posts) -

When I say deus ex (day-us ex) my friends had no idea what I was talking about... they had only heard of a game called Deus Ex (Juice Ex)

#46 Posted by Demyx (3237 posts) -

Try enunciating more. I've never actually heard it like that.

#47 Posted by Red (5991 posts) -

I once said something is a Deus Ex Machina in public, and people thought I was saying "Do you sex my kinas" whatever kina would be, I don't know.

Deus Ex is a great name.
#50 Posted by VarkhanMB (157 posts) -

Well let me tell you!
Deus Ex, when pronounced a bit fast in French, really sounds like "Deux Sexes" which means "Two Sexes"
Basically people think you're talking about the latest Hermaphrodite movie in the porn industry
