A celebrated cyberpunk-themed first-person role playing game, Deus Ex put players behind the shades of JC Denton, an operative thrust into a world of byzantine global conspiracies.
Overview
Developed by Ion Storm and released in 2000 by Eidos Interactive, Deus Ex is a first-person shooter with a number of distinct role-playing aspects. Deus Ex has players take on the role of one JC Denton, a genetically engineered and nanotechnologically-augmented agent of UNATCO, the United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition. Through the investigation of claims made by a supposed terrorist faction, the NSF, players are introduced to a world of opposing conspiratorial organizations like the Illuminati and Majestic 12, who vie against each other in a secret shadow war for control of the planet and humanity as a whole.Improving your character
A large part of Deus Ex revolves around the ability to improve JC Denton's abilities. There are 3 notable ways to do this: Augmentation Canisters, Upgrade Canisters, and spending Skill Points.Augmentation and Upgrade Canisters
Using canisters the player can improve Denton's abilities via bio-mechanical augmentation. Around the world the player can find various types of Augmentation Canisters, which when used with a medical bot will allow implementation of said Canister. Denton has a number of augmentation "slots" in his body, and only one augmentation may be used per slot at any given time. Ever Canister houses 2 augmentations, which are are set in the game code, and not random. You will never find a canister that has a "head" augmentation and a "leg" augmentation. Canisters always house 2 augmentations for a single, specific slot, forcing the player to choose one augmentation over the other. The augmentation slots are as follows:- Head Augmentations
- Eye Augmentations
- Subdermal Augmentations
- Torso Augmentations
- Arm Augmentations
- Leg Augmentations
Skill Points
At the start of each game a player is allotted a set number of skill points, which they may immediately spend, or save, on various skills. Skillpoints can be spent to upgrade skills at any time during gameplay, though spending some at the very start is generally immediately and noticably helpful. The player usually gains more skillpoints by completing main and sub-objectives, though they can be gained by simply exploring the game world or performing certain actions. Every skill has 4 levels of training: Untrained, Trained, Advanced, and Master. The trainable skills are as follows:- Computer
- Electronics
- Environmental Training
- Lockpicking
- Medicine
- Swimming
- Weapons: Demolition (Grenades, etc)
- Weapons: Heavy (Rocket launchers, etc
- Weapons: Low-Tech (Swords, knives etc)
- Weapons: Pistol (Handguns, etc)
- Weapons: Rifle (Sniper rifles, machine guns etc)
Weapons List
Heavy Weapons
Flamethrower - A portable flamethrower that uses pressurized napalm to melt the flesh off of an advisory.
Guided Explosive Projectile (GEP) Gun - A shoulder-mounted launcher that can fire rockets and laser guide them to their target with pinpoint accuracy.
Light Anti Tank Weapon (LAW) - The Law provides an agent with cheap and dependable anti-armor capabilities with a one-shot rocket and high tech delivery system built into the weapon.
Plasma Rifle - An experimental weapon which superheats slugs of magnetically-doped plastic and accelerates the resulting gas-liquid mix using an array of liner magnets. The result is a deadly plasma stream which is extremely effective against slow moving targets.
Pistols
Pistol - The standard 10mm pistol issued to UNATCO agents and other various law enforcement agencies.
Stealth Pistol - A variant of the standard pistol, the stealth pistol features a larger clip and an integrated silencer designed specifically for stealth combat.
Mini-Crossbow - Specifically designed for espionage the Min-Crossbow features three different types of darts each of which are useful in various situations which rely heavily on stealth rather than brute force.
PS20 - A disposable plasma-based weapon developed by an unknown security organization as a prototype for a next-generation stealth pistol.
Rifles
Assault Rifle - Designed for close-quarters combat the 7.62x5lmm assault rifle utilizes a shortened barrel design for increased maneuverability.
Assault Shotgun - The Assault Shotgun AKA the "street sweeper" is a combination of a normal shotgun and a fully automatic feed which results in a weapon that is particularly effective in urban combat and more than capable of clearing a room in the blink of an eye.
Sawed-off Shotgun - This pump-action weapon is capable of firing buckshot or sabot shells in a wide spread at a close range.
Sniper Rifle - A military sniper rifle capable of firing 30.06 rounds at a long range.
Low-Tech Weapons
Baton - A standard Baton used by riot police and national security forces.
Riot Prod - A short range weapon which causes an seizure like reaction whenever the victim is hit by the end of the prod. The weapon is most effectively used against an unsuspecting target and or aimed towards the chest.
Combat Knife - A standard stainless steel combat knife, effective in close range combat.
Throwing Knives - A knife which is thrown at the target, usually preferred by assassins.
Crowbar - A crowbar. Hit someone with it and repeat.
Pepper Gun - A riot control weapon which causes temporary blinding and irritability in the victim.
Sword - A typical sword.
Dragon's Tooth Sword - A nanotechnolgically constructed blade which is dynamically "forged" on command into a non-eutactic solid. This weapon is unbreakable and unbelievably sharp.
Demolition
Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Grenade - The EMP grenade is effective against cameras, security grids, and any other electronically controlled device.
Gas Grenade - The gas grenade releases CS ( a military-grade tear gas). CS will cause its victims to be irritable, temporarily blinded, and have uncontrollable coughing.
Lightweight Attack Munitions (LAM) - An explosive which can be thrown or attached to any surface and used as a proximity grenade. It is also capable of being used as a typical frag grenade.
Scramble Grenade - Causes security bots to attack each other and be blind to security breaches. Like the LAM it can be attached to any surface and doubles as a proximity grenade.
Items List
Healing
Candy Bar - A big, yummy, chocolate candy bar that can consumed by an agent to heal injuries. ( 2 health)
Cigarettes - Your typical everyday pack of cigarettes; this item does not have any positive physical effects on the body, in fact an agent will lose health when they smoke. (-10 torso health)
Forty - A cold 40 ounce bottle of malt liquor. This item will cause an agent to get a slight buzz and eventually cause drunkenness if taken in large quantities during a single sitting. The positive aspect of drinking is the obvious health boost it will gives the agent. Drinking a forty will be helpful in healing minor injuries. The loss of a limb however, not so much. ( 2 health, temporary vision blurring)
Liquor - Like the "forty" Liquor will heal minor injuries at the cost of a temporary drunken stupor. ( 2 health, temporary vision blurring)
Medkit - The Medkit is specifically designed to cause an agent's nanomachines to metabolize the healing content within and as a result an agent can be healed quickly and efficiently. Please note that you are capable of healing specific body parts in the character screen, if you choose not to do this the medkit will automatically heal your critical body parts. Agents with medical training can greatly increase the healing quality of the medkit. ( A minimum of 25 health, which increases depending on your skill level)
Soda - Soda can be swallowed to heal minor injuries. ( 2 health)
Soy Food - Textured soy protein stored in a package which automatically heats up when opened, this tasty food can heal small injuries. ( 5 health)
Wine - An expensive bottle of wine. ( 2 health, temporary vision blurring)
Zyme Vial - A small vial of lab-brewed drugs. When taken the agent suffers problems with their vision that are equal to the maximum level of drunkenness. These problems can last for a fairly long time. (temporary vision blurring)
Armor
Ballistic Armor - Constructed of electrically sensitive polymer sheets designed to instantly react to a bullet or explosion impact and "stiffen" to absorb the majority of the damage, Ballistic Armor can be a very effective tool in keeping an agent safe if used correctly.
Hazmat Suit - A standard hazmat suit designed to protect the user from hazardous materials such as radiation, fire, biochemical toxins, electricity, and EMP.
Thermoptic Camo - Thermoptic Camo can render an agent invisible to both humans and bots by using advanced fiber-optics and a built in computer system designed to dynamically reflect light and radar waves. Unfortunately, this item can not be used for a very long time due to the fact that it will short-circuit very quickly. So use it wisely.
Utilities
Binoculars - Binoculars issued to military personnel. (useful for scouting and greatly increasing your sight)
Fire Extinguisher - A standard fire extinguisher designed to put an end to chemical fires. (used to temporarily blind enemies and countering flamethrower attacks)
Flare - It lights up. (used to distract enemies and or illuminate a room)
Lockpick - A disposable lockpick. (used to pick locks on safes, lockers, doors, trapdoors, and chests)
Multitool - A disposable electronics tool that uses electromagnetic resonance detection and frequency modulation to change the flow of a circuit's current. (used for disabling or bypassing security cameras, keypads, alarms, and turrets.)
Rebreather - A chemical scrubber that extracts oxygen from water while an agent is submerged under water. (used for breathing underwater)
Tech Goggles - Used by many special ops forces, Tech Goggles provide an agent with limited light amplification. (used for seeing in the dark)
Music
The music in Deus Ex is a mixture of jazz, techno, and classical influenced ambient tracks, each of which provides a great enhancement to the mysterious and gritty atmosphere of the game. The game also features a dynamic music system. Whenever a player enters combat the music will shift from slow paced to fast paced and adrenaline pumping. The music will also change whenever a player enters a conversation with another person and after level transitions. The implementation of this transitional style of music creates yet another layer to this already immensely deep game.Deus Ex Track List:
