Vergil (Special Edition Only)

The third game in Capcom's popular action adventure series. This is a prequel to the original Devil May Cry and the first game of the franchise's storyline chronologically.
Overview
Devil May Cry 3 is an action game developed by Capcom for the PlayStation 2. While it is the third game in the series, it is a prequel to the original game. It is widely known for its stylish combat and it is often ranked as one of the most difficult games of all time.Plot
Devil May Cry 3 tells the story of the main character, Dante, before the events of Devil May Cry 1. Dante is in the process of setting up his Demon Hunter for hire shop, and he looks and acts much more brash and aggressively than in the first game. The game begins with Dante trying to set up his shop when he is visited by a mysterious man, who says that Dante's brother Vergil has a gift for him, which turns out to be an attack by a horde of demons. Dante then goes after his brother Vergil, who has resurrected the ancient Temen-ni-Gru temple to break the seal blocking the demon world from the human world. If Vergil succeeds, not only will he gain the powers of their demonic father, but also cause the total destruction of the human world.Gameplay
The gameplay in Devil May Cry 3 revolves around the concept of stylish action. There are an astounding number of weapons, moves and combat styles that Dante has at his disposal. Dante starts the game with his two pistols, Ebony and Ivory, along with his demonic sword, Rebellion. Dante also gains the ability to temporarily transform into a demon form, an ability called Devil Trigger. Each combat style also has a special move that changes when the style is upgraded. There is no block button (except for one combat style where you can create a shield), so the game is 100% offensive mayhem. Health and energy items, along with new techniques, are purchased with red orbs gained from defeating enemies and completing chapters of the game. Before each level, the player picks a fighting style and is given four slots in which to place two melee weapons and two guns. The selected weapons can then be switched between in real-time, even mid-combo, resulting in an effective way to build up style points and the creation of unprecedented attack sequences.
Difficulty
Devil May Cry 3 has been said to be one of the most difficult games of all time by many critics. The factors that contribute to this are that enemies often have much faster attacks than you, along with some boss attacks having the ability to completely deplete your health with two to three strikes, and even though you can upgrade your guns and swords with the red orbs you earn, the price for recovery items goes up after each purchase, forcing you to spend more of the orbs you want for techniques on those items instead. There was also no time to get a feel for the controls, as the game just sets you in a giant battle on the first chapter.Cutscenes
Devil May Cry as a series is renowned for its outlandish cutscenes, and Devil May Cry 3 has possibly the most far-fetched and visually bombastic yet. This is evident from the very opening scene, in which Dante does several back flips, shoots pool balls back at enemies in slow motion, rides an enemy around the room like a surfboard (one of the only examples of something that can be repeated in-game) and gets several of the enemies' sickle blades jammed in his body and proceeds to attack his foes using them. On other occasions, Dante is shot directly in the head by Lady as she falls hundreds of feet, he rides on the back of a missile, drives a motorcycle down the side of the enormous tower that most of the game takes place in, literally slices a bullet in half, and freefalls whilst taking on enemies in mid-air. The camera positioning during these scenes was also superb, demonstrated by a shot inside Dante's sleeve near the beginning of the game.Fighting Styles
In all there are six styles of play in Devil May Cry 3, four of which are available from the outset. Each style can be upgraded with continued use, so most decided to stick with one or two that they were comfortable with, rather than switching around between them constantly. This is exacerbated by the fact that when a style is not in use, it is essentially useless. Abilities gained by styles were generally put to use on the Circle button in the PS2 version. It should be noted that the choice of style did not affect the basic moveset in any way, merely added an extra element to the gameplay which allowed players to better fight the way they wished.- Trickster - The game recommends this style for beginner players, as it is based around dodging attacks. Skills including wall-running could be gained alongside the basic dash move.
- Swordmaster - A purely offensive play style based around improving melee combat skills. Advancement in Swordmaster unlocked new attacks, such as the ability to spin Dante's blade.
- Gunslinger - This play style was for those who loved all things shooty. Proficient Gunslingers could gain additional uses for their firearms.
- Royal Guard - A style for advanced players only. It made use of hand-to-hand combat and allowed the player to charge attack power through well timed blocks. Were enough power charged, Dante could unleash some high damage attacks, including some echoing moves seen in Capcom's Street Fighter franchise.
These play styles are obtained during the course of the game.
- Doppelganger - This play style made it possible for another Dante to appear as he fought, in a similar manner to one of the abilities in Viewtiful Joe.
- Quicksilver - Allowed Dante to slow his enemies' movements to a crawl, but preserve his own speed, meaning he could get in several attacks before the enemy moved. It lasted only a short period, however, and was similar in concept to Bullet Time.
Special Edition
Capcom announced a special edition of Devil may Cry 3 at the Tokyo Game Show in 2005. It had a toned down difficulty level, and came with a new extra, the ability to play as Vergil (Dante's brother and enemy). This added more replay value to the game as well as helped it in the critical perspective. Another new game mode called Bloody Palace was introduced as an arena mode where players could practice and gain more red orbs. There were also a number of new boss battles against a character only seen in cutscenes in the original version of the game. The special edition of Devil May Cry 3 was included in the 5th Anniversary collection of all the Devil may Cry games that was released in 2006.Melee Weapons
Dante
- Rebellion sword - Dante’s trusted sword. This is the only weapon available at the start of the game.
- Cerberus - Three legged nun-chuck infused with the power of ice. Dante acquires this weapon after defeating Cerberus, the mythical three headed dog, in battle.
- Agni and Rudra - Demon swords with faces in the hilt. They are infused with red and blue flames respectively. Dante takes them with him after defeating their former headless masters on the condition that they remain silent.
- Nevan - Demon spirit in the form of an electric guitar/scythe. She is infused with the power of electricity and is able to conjure bats which are hurled at her enemies. She takes this form and falls into Dante’s possession after her defeat at Dante’s hands.
- Beowulf - Set of gauntlets and boots acquired by Dante after a fight with his brother Vergil. The equipment originally came from the Demon Beowulf which after being seriously injured by Dante was killed by Vergil.
Vergil (Special Edition Only)
- Yamato - Vergil’s incredibly sharp samurai sword.
- Force Edge - erivative of the legendary blade/warrior Sparda.
- Beowulf - Set ofgauntlets and boots acquired from killing the demon Beowulf.
Vergil possesses all of his weapons at the start of the game.
Guns and Projectiles
Dante
- Ebony and Ivory - Dante’s two handguns. They are Dante’s signature projectile weapon. They can fire in midair, and when airborne will slow Dante’s descent.
- Shotgun - The shotgun is a close range weapon and can not only inflict massive damage, but it often times knocks enemies down. Can fire in midair.
- Artemis - A weapon powered by demonic energy. It can lock onto multiple targets or shoot multiple blasts at one target. Can fire in midair.
- Spiral - Spiral is a sniper rifle which Dante finds simply lying around. It is very powerful at any range.
- Kalina Ann - A very powerful rocket launcher. It is given to Dante by Lady after her defeat.
Vergil (Special Edition Only)
- Phantom Swords - Vergil’s only projectile weapon. He has the ability to shoot homing ghost swords at his enemies. They are rather powerful when leveled up.
