So evidently the Asia and EU releases of Diablo III aren't going quite swimingly.

    http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/4926494400?page=1

Massive authentication errors for anyone with a digital copy of the game abound. Servers are being turned on and off with little to no effect. GM's are being forced to manually flag people with digital copies to let them play the game. Europe is just totally overloaded stopping people from getting in.

So what do you think, is this the typical launch day pains you expected from the game, or are you still holding out hope that servers will be adjusted and fixed by the time the NA release rolls around tonight? I for one will be going to bed and trying in the morning. I don't have the patience for that kind of nonsense.

Anyone from Asia or the EU have any horror stories to share? What has your experience been like so far?

Here is the link to the server status in case you're interested. I've read on the b-net forums that these may or may not be accurate at times. I don't know how often this gets updated, but I have seen it change.

Oh, I wouldn't say I'm surprised, just noting in. It's making me anxious though that there are grander problems that may need more extensive fixing that just a late night.

Wait, what? A huge developer can't get their shit together for the launch of a game that they knew would be massively popular? I am truly shocked.

Always felt that the net in EU/Asia were dodgy at times or just not well set up properly with different countries trying to do different things with limiting it. Hard to tell how it will be for US servers but imagine that if nothing else the authentication might be online then playing offline recommended until they figure out what to do about the servers. That or just consolidate a bunch of the wow realms to smaller servers as the population drops while they play D3.

Australians are being thrown into American servers so I hope its fixed for the US. Kinda scary that a game that can't be played single player without a server connection could have these issues.

I think they were as prepared as one could be. There was 2 million players that participated in the stress test. This could mean record breaking sales.

Do you guys seriously think they have not done absolutely everything they can to make this run as smooth of possible? There isn't a team in the world that could deal with such massive game launches and get it running flawlessly right out of the gate. Of course there will be problems. Literally no one else in the world has had to deal with this type of thing on this scale.

Yep, their servers are pretty much being hit by an equivalent of a DDoS attack.

No beta will prevent the issues that thousands upon thousands of people logging onto the servers at one time will cause.

This. All the preparation and work in the world won't make a magic server that can handle this many requests. Anyone who thinks it was going to go smoothly doesn't know enough about whats happening when all of these people are suddenly given access.

Well, if people could play single player offline, like most games, than things would prolly be going better. But meh... they'll have it fix in a few days, just sucks for people who wanted to play it on it release date.

Only 1 more hour of Guild Wars 2 stresstest to hold me off obsessing over Diablo 3, and not getting to play the game right away. Guess I'll just call it a night and play it tomorrow, if it's not sorted by then - rather than getting the life sucked out of me by login server clogs.

The beta servers were crap and were constantly being broken.  I don't know if it was shoddy code, poor hardware, not enough workers, or simply didn't give a fuck.  It killed any chance of me buying it because I do solo gaming and I don't want to be reliant on their crappy servers.  And yes, I also go out of town with no internet so thats another reason.

Good news is: I fixed my computer and the game is now installed and booting properly. Bad news: servers don't go live here until 3 AM my time and judging by the EU launch, wouldn't be able to play even of I do stay up that late. =\

So, I am a bit ignorant when it comes to Diablo 3. Does it allow you to log in (while the battle.net servers are up) and play single player offline if the connection to battle.net goes down? You know like how it was in starcraft 2? you could still play campaign if the connection went down, but achievments would be disabled.

Chances are they'll still be able to play on release day. Starcraft 2 had similar issues with people getting authenticated and being able to log in, but it was resolved halfway through the release day. People just shouldn't expect to be playing the first couple hours that the server goes up in their area.

From what I understand, it's an "always-on" authentication. I assume this means if you lose the connection to the server, you're kicked from the game. That seems to be the experience some users are having on the b-net forums.

Anyone who thought a launch of this magnitude - for any game, from any company - needs to seriously sit down and re-examine their expectations.

Yes, it kind of sucks to not be in the game, flawlessly, on the exact moment it launches. But I find it hard to believe that any game's servers will hold up to the tune of literally millions of people all trying to interact with it at once.

Interesting choice Blizzard has made there. Any word on why they are using this method of authentication?

I'm guessing piracy and cheating, particularly since their new "Auction House" can deal in real money. But who really knows? I imagine this only compounds their launch woes though.

Just tried logging in and it's saying I don't own the game yet my account page says otherwise. I are confused! Also, I'm in Canada so it's not just a Asia/EU thing.

That's probably because the game has yet to actually launch in the Americas. Wait until midnight PDT.

@crusader8463: If you're in Canada and selected the Americas as your region, you won't be allowed on B-net yet as the Americas don't launch until tonight. But I believe it just tells you the servers are down, not that you haven't purchased the game yet.
