DIABLO 3 WILL BE FREE!! (sort of)
I wonder if this applies to people who have played WoW for more than 12 months in the past, but have since stopped. Probably not...

Your post is a little misleading. If you opt to BUY the NEW 12 month annual subscription to WoW, you will get Diablo 3 for free. I'm guessing that this will not be retroactive regarding players who have been subscribed for more than 12 months as that would be ridiculous.

It was more wishful thinking than anything else.
Great if you're still into playing WoW.. but considering the other MMO's coming out next year, it's pretty obvious why they're doing this.
I still don't expect anything to "dethrone" WoW, but they've got some big competition coming.
The actual information hasn't been posted in this thread so here it is.
You have to have been an active WoW subscriber before October 18th
You have to commit to paying for WoW for another year
You can keep paying your subscription the way you want (1,3,6 months) but you can't cancel for a year
There is no 12 month payment option
Pretty amazing deal for people who were planning on playing WoW anyway.
Bah, gots to get me a Collectors Edition. Maybe if I purchase 5 years worth of gametime?
On another note, I'm expecting people to start paying their WoW subscription with money they make from the real money auction house thing in Diablo III. This effectively prevents people from cashing out while there's little money in circulation. Very clever!

Yeah I'll probably buy it anyway even though I'll get a free copy, heh.
I'm surprised they've got the "Must be subscribed on Oct. 18" requirement. It heads off the possibility of resubs. I guess that makes it seem more like a rewards for WoW diehards, though.
@Akrid: It's a commitment to play for 12 months, you don't pay it all up front. You can use any plan you want, whether it's paying month to month ($15/month or $180 over the course of a year) or paying 6 months at a time (about $150 over the course of the year). You're just agreeing to the 12 year contract, not paying it upfront.
Think of it like a cellphone plan, WoW is your cell phone plan and D3 is the free phone you get.
@YoungFrey: Sorta makes sense, since the free product you are getting is Diablo 3 ($60) and 4 months of Wow time is $60. They're just reimbursing you the value of what you'd normally get, since you will already have the game.
