How's your index finger holding up?

#1 Posted by Jayesslee (105 posts) -

I've been playing this game on and off since launch, and I've burned out on it after the first weekend. I still get in maybe 30 minutes everyday trying to get through a checkpoint or two, but my index finger gets worn out more easily each day. Anyone experiencing the same thing?

No, it is perfectly fine since the EU servers are fucked up! :(

That's actually pretty sad if your finger is becoming fatigued. Also, you can hold the button down instead of constantly clicking.

And on a serious note, if you start to feel your pinky and medial side of the ring finger going numb you've pinched your ulnar nerve. Use the exercises here if that's the case.

If the index, middle, and lateral side of the ring finger go numb you're running into issues with carpal tunnel. The guide here has an exercise for that.

I hate that I actually thought to put links for these, but knowing how addictive games like Diablo can be it's probably a good idea to put that information out there.

Perfectly fine, people completely exaggerate the amount of clicking needed to in the game... Though my hand was cramping up a bit earlier, since I most play on consoles and isn't used to holding the mouse for a prolonged amount of time.

Right now though, I'm just waiting till the serves are back up. Playing Binding of Isaac and Half-Life/Blue Shift/Opposing Force helps a bit.

Feels perfectly fine. It has highlighted how loud my mouse actually is though.

@Toxeia: Actually thanks for the links. My pinky sometimes goes numb due to the odd control scheme of some games (except for D3 since it only requires like, six buttons.)

Fine

#7 Posted by Toxeia (721 posts) -

@eroticfishcake: Ulnar nerve entrapment is serious business, but surgically is fixed quite easily. If you put your arm out with the inside of your elbow facing up there's a bone that comes out on the medial (towards your center) side. See, they use anesthesia, and then take a dremel tool to that bone. =| Downside is then you have this weird nerve that just flops around.

Fine. Sometimes I forget that I'm clicking so furiously. When I take my headset off I realise I'm spam clicking like 150x per minute..

Not mine. Well my index finger is fine but with the wealth of PC games I've gotten into lately I think I feel the loving embrace of the carpal tunnel claw coming on. I've been taking breaks to stretch my hand to hopefully slow the onset of any loot-related injuries but it probably doesn't help that I use a PC all day at work too.

Always be holding the button.

#11 Posted by MonetaryDread (1956 posts) -

I have my movement bound to the "e" key.  This way I can give my finger a break while being able to run through a pack of enemies without fear of attacking them along the way.

#12 Posted by eroticfishcake (7780 posts) -

@Toxeia: ...

That sounds pretty horrible. It's a good thing it doesn't happen that often to me but now I can't help but feel somewhat uncomfortable about it...

Alot better than my mouse is..

Just fine. I've worn it out more playing Battlefield with rifles in single-shot mode.

Same here, except I use 'W' since my muscle memory already associates it to move. In fact I've found holding the movement key while doing my normal click melee routine helps me avoid projectiles without even thinking about it.

aight, but my pinky is feeling sore.

#16 Posted by DillonWerner (1521 posts) -

Never felt better, but I haven't played much in the past three days.

Judging by my girl's reaction last night, the index finger is a-okay.

Index finger wrestling is fun. ,p

To those saying just hold down the button: this is not a viable solution for every class/setup.

Especially not for melee with a high attack speed and a horde of enemies.

.

That said my fingers are fine, they are well conditioned :P

Fingers are fine. It's my wrist that gets a lot of stress :)

#21 Edited by Robo (749 posts) -

My fingers are fine. I've got a great mouse. Logitech G700. Both wrists are fine too.

I'm a digital artist, used to long stretches with my hand wrapped around a mouse or pen and hovering over hotkeys.

Just be sure to take regular breaks, keep the correct posture - comfortable and cramp free, adjust your hardware or upgrade it if it feels unnatural (you may think you can just deal with it but your body won't).

As others have mentioned, that slight numbness and discomfort shouldn't be ignored. It may seem like nothing but after a while it could develop into something much more serious.

Left pinky finger is getting a little weird from pressing and releasing CTRL 2 times per second when I'm kiting.

Been playing Diablo II for over ten years so it's nothing new.

You do realize if you move your mouse from enemy to enemy you don't have to release the button ? Dunno about monk, but as barb I rarely re-click my main attack at all when fighting a group of enemies.

#26 Posted by Cronus42 (270 posts) -

For everyone swaying hold the button: you're actually gimping yourself. The way the animation and command system works in a lot of blizzard games, you can get I think 5% extra attack speed or so by spam clicking as opposed to holding the button.

Yeah I know, again when you get into very high attack speeds it starts to break down, if your mouse is not near an enemy at the time when your swing is supposed to be the attack stops. This is especially true with a high dps when enemies are dying in 1-2 hits. You have to be pretty much spamming the mouse accross the entire screeen with say a move like Thunderstrike with inbuilt teleportation that makes you not need to run between enemies.

@Tennmuerti: Guess it comes down to difficulty level. Been playing Inferno way too much to even remember how it is at lower levels =/

Index finger has been through years of rigorous training and his holding up okay. However, I did have some fatigue in my left pinky after a marathon session. You hit Shift a lot when playing a ranged class.

Playing Runescape when I was young combined with tragic chronic masturbation has given me a right hand of solid steel.

#32 Posted by TheHT (10324 posts) -

mouse hand is fine but my keyboard hand feels strained having to stretch all about to quickly hit 1,2,3,4 and then back to shift. tried rebinding the hotkeys to aswd/space and awdf/space but i'm so used to using 1234/shift anything else ha me fumbling around.

Yeah the shift key thing got old quick. Bind that shit to spacebar (close all windows can be shift if you want). Much easier on the hand.

thank you for this info, i have had the described numbness for a while for the last 2 days i used these exercises and it has relieved much of the numbness.

I get the feeling I did way more clicking in Diablo 2. Now it seems to be a lot more actions on the left hand from hitting 1-4, shift and control.

my right index finger is deff hurting a bit. ive had to take a break from video games until it gets any better haha. I just got diablo this past week. Incredibly addicting.

my bones in my hand sometimes really hurt when playing for long periods of time, my hand tends to cramp up too.

Sucks :(
