But anyways, it was estimated that she was born around 160 AD. We aren't sure who she was born to but the novels stated that she was the adoptive daughter of Wag Yun, then a minister for Dong Zhuo. Displeased with Dong Zhuo, Wang Yun decided to use Diao Chan to create tension between Dong Zhuo and Lu Bu, the most powerful warrior who was then serving under Dong Zhuo.
Wang Yun first lied to Lu Bu about marrying him with Diao Chan, because Diao Chan was later given to Dong Zhuo as a concubine. Soon after that, she began to create tension between Lu Bu and Dong Zhuo, such as telling Lu Bu to rescue her from Dong Zhuo and vise-versa (ask DZ to save her from Lu Bu). It got to such a point that Lu Bu went to Wang Yun to plot an assassination to Dong Zhuo, which suceeded.
After Dong Zhuo's death, Diao Chan followed Lu Bu as he began to become a contestant vying to unite the land under his control, but Liu Bei and Cao Cao defeated Lu Bu at Xia Pi. Then the fate of Diao Chan wasn't mentioned after that.
There are a number of theories about Diao Chan's fate. Here are some of the more known ones:
1. Diao Chan is taken in by Cao Cao, and used as bait to lure Guan Yu (awesome warrior from Liu Bei). Yu kills Diao Chan, afraid that he might be lured to his death (like Lu Bu killing Dong Zhuo)
2. DC is taken in by Liu Bei and company. Over a dispute on who to marry Diao Chan, Yu (again!) slays her to end the dispute.
3. DC escapes to be a nun, but was pursued by Cao Cao so she committed suicide.
Diao Chan is most notably in the Dynasty Warriors series. In her Musou mode in Warriors 6, she plays a similar role as Dong Zhuo's concubine. However, the key difference is that she is really loyal in Wang Yun, her adoptive father, and she strived to achieve Wang's dream to restore the Han Dynasty. To do so, she constantly manipulates Lu Bu to do her bidding, while attempting to hide her motives. But she was soon caught by Cheng Gong, Lu Bu's adviser, and eventually Lu Bu himself. But Lu, who didn't want to upset Diao, decided to go along with her plan. As a result, she is genuinely in love with Lu Bu and wants to be with him. She used to use dual maces in the games, but she started using a chain whip from Dynasty Warriors 6. And throughout the series, she is seen to be meek, obedient, yet she is very persuasive to Lu Bu, controlling him like a puppet.
She also appeared in the spin-offs of the Warriors series, such as the Empires games (4 5), all three Warriors Orochi games. And she appeared in 2 non-Warriors game: Kessen 2 and Ikkitousen: Shining Dragon. It should be pointed out that Diao Chan's depiction as Liu Bei's lover in Kessen 2 is fictional.
