My girlfriend wants to play through this game, which made me realize that the story wouldn't make any sense... 
 
         

The story doesn't work. Or at least, it doesn't have the same emotional impact.

Well you have a vagina instead of a penis.

 Guys I read this book where the narration is in the first person and I don't have a vagina. 
 
What do I do. 
 
I'm failing to see how this is a problem at all. You don't have to be a dude to appreciate a good story about a dude.     
 
Or vice versa

Kind of a bummer then, I guess.  About the story not working, not about the vagina, I mean.

I don't see how the first part wouldn't work, but i guess the second part is a really minor problem... I think she'll be just fine...

It doesn't mean that she can't appreciate the story.  It's just a good love story, and even though it tries to be super immersive, that's really all it is: a visual novel from the first person perspective.  I'm sure she'll be able to get over it, unless I'm giving your girlfriend too much credit.

It'll work fine, because falling love with Emilia based on the ambiguous emo dialogue she gives you at the beginning of the game is ridiculous in the first place.

I'm a girl, I played it, immersed myself just fine.  
Based moreso on the gameplay however than any actual feelings for Emilia, as I can relate to this:
