On August 11, we'll be able to welcome Microsoft into the digital age, as its finally rolling out the ability to purchase full games that were previously only available on disc. Think of it as the 360 finally getting to where the PC has been for years, and where the PSP has been for a bit, now, too.

It's like having an Animus! In your house!
It's like having an Animus! In your house!
21 games will be available at the launch of the service, which hits in conjunction with the upcoming dashboard update that'll also let you buy clothes and trinkets for your little virtual dude. Prices aren't available just yet, but I'm going to come out and guess $19.99 for most of these. Many of these games are already selling in stores for that price. Here's the list:

Actually, now that I look over the list, maybe $19.99 is a little steep for some of these. Prey? Maybe for $9.99. Same with the first Viva Pinata, which was sort of made obsolete by the second, and Fight Night Round 3, which isn't of much use now that Round 4 is in stores.

The press release with this list also specifically mentions Sonic the Hedgehog as coming to Games on Demand, but it's not on the launch day list. I know you're crushed.

Again, the catalog will grow on a weekly basis, but don't take that to mean that you'll be buying Halo 3: ODST "on demand" later this year. It's going to initially focus on back-catalog releases.

    Great news :)

If you guess right the prices, it will be hilarious, since most of those games, in europe are at the same price they launched.

    Take that greedy videogame stores!!!!

Also if it was to come L4D, that would be fun to watch too.

Some games are worth it if they are still $20. I can get some of those games for a better price.

That's the thing.  Why would you want to download it if you can get a physical copy for less?  When they start having games there that you can purchase for cheaper compared to EB Games/Amazon, then it will be ineteresting.

Say what you want about Sonic the Hedgehog, but it's a goldmine for potential drinking games. Died a buggy death? Take a shot. Cutscene containing creepy human/anthropomorth romance subplot? Take a shot.

Uh, why? Doesn't Microsoft know that the only people who would even consider buying that would have gotten it at Walmart after they saw the movie?

On another game website they said there are 3 additional games launching for us North Americans and that the Europeans are limited to the 21 games. Lucky us. Here's the list that was put up by joystiq... don't know which one is correct, but here it is:

    Ridge Racer 6 (Namco)
    Burnout Paradise (EA)
    Meet The Robinsons (Disney)
Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis (Rockstar Games)
    Call of Duty® 2 (Activision)
    MX vs. ATV Untamed (THQ)
    Sonic the Hedgehog (SEGA)
Viva Piñata 2: Trouble in Paradise (Microsoft Game Studios)
    Need for Speed Carbon (EA)
    Test Drive: Unlimited (Atari)
    Fight Night Round 3 (EA)
Need for Speed: Most Wanted (EA)
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (2K Games/Bethesda Softworks)

@ArbitraryWater: Yeah, hopefully not all of them (like Kameo, which I've seen around for $9.99) will be $19.99. There are a couple of games on that list that I would buy (Burnout Paradise and, once again, Kameo), but probably not digitally. I can get a used platinum hit for $12-15 and not have to clog up the hard-drive. Still, it's speculation at this point; I'll see when prices are officially announced.

Ill buy LEGO Star Wars when this launches. Mosly because I already have or have played everything else except for Meet The Robinsons and Sega Rally that aren' t worth buying in the first place.
Many I'll buy COD2 since I never finished it.

Also why the hell are there ppl that are negative to this. Its not like this is the only way to buy games from now on so I dont get the negativity.
Fuck, if your complaining that you can buy a game in more places now and digitaly theres something wrong whit you, no one is forcing you to buy any of this.

Overall the list seems pretty good for back cataloge but I have three problems.

    1) I can get these games for cheaper or similer price already.

    2) I have a 20gb HDD (which is actually more like 13gb) and when I erase everything I dont need (saves, DLC im using and Arcade games im playing) I only have 3gb left.

    3) I have a terrible download speed (and only way to upgrade is to move) which means this would take many hours (6 or more in some cases) so I may as well just go to my local store and get a copy if its going to be cheaper or similer.

and maybe i should try to get into Viva Pinata finally?

I have a 60gb but my internet is super fast, so i don't mind deleting and redownloading for space

Its just that you dont know if you can buy it for less then a physical copy and the point of this is that those that dont want physical copys can buy them as downloadable, also I belive you can only get Kameo as used and they will probebly add games that are out of print now. Like say COD2 im also pretty sure you cant get new anymore.

I think Perfect Dark Zero, graphically, still holds up to this day, well i would say that, it was the first 360 ("next-gen" to me then) game i ever played and wow.

I'd rather play the original of course, but i still liked Zero...mostly because of the time i was released though.

Almost all of these games are about the same price at Gamestop. New. Which means they're fucking overpriced here because its not more convenient to buy this version of a game over the disc version with the current average internet speeds, and the disc version costs money to make, and this doesn't, so it should be cheaper. Like, half of what they're asking for most of these. You don't sell old games by keeping them the same price, everyone who gave a damn about Assassin's Creed already played it. It has to be cheaper.
But it doesn't matter what I say, the market will speak for itself.

True that, if the 120GB hard drive wasn't stupidly overpriced I would probably care about this. And if I didn't own most of the games already. And if they weren't likely going to be even more overpriced in the UK.

@jakob187: then do so. doesn't mean others can, and as it comes down it they are used and when they are used the developer doesn't see a dime of that money.

One... Twenty one games... they contain guns... and sometimes you fight.... (doo doo DOO)

Anyway, song references aside, i like this idea. Im one of the people who would rather just download something for the convenience instead of goin out to buy it, as stores tend to weird me out. Seems like a quality list and definitely interests me, as i got my 360 late last year and played none of those games except burnout. However, i think the only game i would buy on here is AC. And CoD.

Way more games than I expected it to be...and Mass Effect will be 1600 points and that's about 20 bucks which is definitely acceptable.

$19.99 in the US huh? Great.

So I'll be able to by Perfect Dark Zero here in Australia, on demand, for probably $60.00, but probably not until next year either.

They really, REALLY need to release Rock Band 2 as a game on demand. The whole DLC-centric nature of that game really lends itself to that market (i.e., ME) It'd make it one step easier to bust out, too, since you would never need to look for the disc, just bust out the instruments and hit "go".

Actually, better yet, for EA, here's your billion dollar idea. Sell a Rock Band Mini set on there, that contains NO songs, just the RB 2 framework, and works off DLC. Bundle the DL with a code to export your RB2 songs to DLC. Then you can get people that don't ever need to grab a disc, they can just buy the songs they want alá carte. (Also, put the RB2 disc songs in a special category of DLC so that RB2 people can't accidentally buy them.) Make this core unit like 5 or 10$. You've already done all the work building it and selling it, and recouped all that in the disc sales of RB1 / 2.

Hell, call it Rock Band 3, and introduce some more casual friendly features with it to incent current RB2 owners to pony up a few bucks for the discless version.

I prefer to have my games on a disc.  It allows me to resell the game if I get tired of it.  Plus it doesn't take up a bunch of space on my hard drive (unless I want it to).  On a different note, let's not forget that you won't have to buy points to purchase games on demand, you'll be able to just use real money.  Maybe this is a step in the direction of abolishing the MS Point system altogether.  One can dream, right?

SO people with the the old Pro models with the 20GB HDD (like me) or have the arcade version are kinda screwed. As far as I am  it's just another scheme on the hands of MS in order to make people buy their extremely over priced HDD's.

Oh, yeah, I can just picture the stampede to buy all those old games. Yeah, there are a few gems on the list, like Mass Effect, but Perfect Dark Zero? Seriously?

I love the idea of this, but, can't help but feel the pricing is a wee bit steep. I tend to trawl thru this site in the UK for bargains:
