    This is my first time playing as well.  They aren't connected...and I understand the story so far so I know that I haven't missed anything story wise.  Apparently there are cameos from other games though so...I probably won't understand those....in other words you won't be lost in the story.

    This isn't the most story-centric franchise out there, so I wouldn't worry too much.  It's practically a parody of anime/Japanese games.
