Club Nintendo Reward Makes Me Insane With Jealousy

A calendar! Perfect! Something to remind me every day of the rewards I didn't get!
I had long envied the Japanese Club Nintendo by the time it finally launched here in the US late last year, and to be honest, I was initially a little disappointed by the so-called exclusive goods being offered by the US club. Still, that didn't stop me from signing up day-one and digging out the serial numbers and registration codes for all the various Nintendo products I had accumulated to accrue precious " coins," hoping that someday there'd be something worth having.

And finally, there is, though sure enough, I haven't purchased enough Nintendo products to get it. Club Nintendo assigns status levels based on how many coins you earn, and at the end of a year (which, inexplicably, ended on June 30th) it offers members cool little extras based on their status. I had made it to gold status, which means I get a Club Nintendo wall calendar. (Please note the sarcastic quotes when I say "yay.") Had I made it to platinum status, I would've got to choose between a pretty legit-looking Mario hat, and Doc Louis's Punch-Out!!, a standalone Wiiware game that pits you as Little Mac against your trainer Doc.

Nintendo's saying that this is the only way you can get Doc Louis's Punch-Out!!, which means that if you're reading this, and you didn't already hit platinum status on your Club Nintendo account, you are SOL. Here's my hypocrisy laid out bare: If I had made it to platinum status, I'd relish the fact that this is the only way to get the game. But, since I didn't, I find myself rationalizing how it would only make sense for Nintendo to release Doc Louis's Punch-Out!! to the general public, and that they are fools for limiting the reach of what is, really, a pretty inconsequential little gimme. Check out the first screenshots and join in my fuming petty jealousy.

#4 Posted by lemon360 (1102 posts) -

beat the crap outa him mac!

#5 Posted by erinfizz (1048 posts) -

Yeah, the calendar is kind of lame...though I certainly sent in my order for it already!

#6 Posted by stokerd (48 posts) -

I hit platinum status. Not sure what I want, that sweet looking hat or the game. Decisions, decisions.

#7 Posted by wizeguy (72 posts) -

mario's cap would be the one for me, but as im in th UK ill settle for the crap they offer us

#8 Edited by FlipperDesert (2087 posts) -

I'd get the hat, and grow a sweet mustache.

#9 Edited by spiceninja (3062 posts) -

I ordered Mario's hat. That WiiWare game where you fight Doc seems like it would be over in about 5 minutes. At least the hat lasts and is a collector's item.

#10 Posted by zigx (75 posts) -

Go for the hat. Just sucker one of your friends to get the Doc Punch-Out DLC, go over to their place and play it for 30 mins. Then jump around Mario-style like an ass with your sweet hat you got instead.

By the looks of it, Doc Louis's Punch-Out!! is a stand-alone game. SOMEONE MAKE A GAMEPAGE QUICK!

#12 Posted by Curufinwe (1265 posts) -

I only got to Gold status and had to get the Nintendo calendar.

#13 Posted by Keyser_Soze (1186 posts) -

An authentic Mario Hat on Ryan's head, would be pure awesome. With a hat like that you could just walk in wherever you wanted. Haven't booked a table at a swanky uptown restaurant, don't worry the Mario hat will be all the cred required to get in.

Ugh... I dunno. I'm weary to choose the Punch Out!! title. I'm afraid that it might actually become available to the public, or like, my Wii is gonna shit out on me or something. Then what? It's just gone? I think I might just go with the cap. As much as I like the new Punch Out!!, I also really REALLY like material collector's items.

I think the stupidest thing is that all the games I had registered last year are now useless to me becoming a higher level member because their points reset at a certain point in the year (I believe it was sometime in June). Am I ever going to buy enough new Nintendo games to get back there? If my entire collection of registerable games from the past years of my life wasn't enough, there's no chance it will ever be, especially when Nintendo has shifted focus away from my sector of the gaming market completely.

And even worse, there are so many Nintendo games that just don't qualify for points.

They had better make it available here in Europe also, exclusive to those who have registered the game.

#17 Posted by Teptom (2047 posts) -

I would love to punch Doc in the face, but I'm getting the hat.

I wish Microsoft and Sony would do this stuff for their systems too.  This sounds really cool and I'd be very interested in a exclusive Marcus Pheonix bandana or a mini-game where I beat up Peter Molyneux with my Fable character.

#19 Posted by MeatSim (10855 posts) -

None of this stuff seems worth the effort to me but  I am pretty lazy.

#20 Posted by Hirushubi (109 posts) -

That mario hat would fit nicely with night vision goggles...

I wonder whats going on with the European Club Nintendo these days. The full body of game stuff is going well, a Spartan helmet, Mario hat and some night vision goggles. Looking forward to Halloween

I got me a hat, lame gifts I must say. They gave out better stuff before they did this coin system..

#23 Posted by Emilio (3380 posts) -

Would you like me to mail you my calendar, Ryan? Is that what you want?? HUH? IS IT!? WELL FINE GOT DAMMIT!

#24 Posted by eduardo (360 posts) -

I had a load of games registered to Nintendo before this club but somehow they locked my account, so even if I wanted to take part, the codes I have are now void. Thanks for the big 'thank you' you gave me for playing your games since nineteen eighty freaking eight. *sigh*

#25 Posted by Kraznor (1578 posts) -

Uh, yeah, I ordered the Mario hat. Really didn't think a little DLC was worthy of a platinum reward.

#26 Posted by Tovan (633 posts) -

Yeah I got the hat as well, I would rather have a physical object than something I'll play a couple times, then have take up space on my Wii for an eternity.

#27 Posted by spiceninja (3062 posts) -

From reading these comments and seeing that almost everyone got the Mario hat I can't help but wonder if this wasn't just a huge conspiracy by Nintendo. They give you some meh DLC and then an awesome Mario hat to pick from. You obviously don't pass up a Mario hat so now no one has the DLC and then Nintendo can charge for it in a few months. It's genius!

#28 Posted by Agnogenic_delete (1034 posts) -

I would choose the Mario hat.

#29 Posted by Brackynews (4083 posts) -

The weird thing is Doc would still be in Mac's corner between rounds:
"Mac, okay I'm gonna beat tha shit outta ya.  Then I'm gonna have a chocolate bar.  Dat's cool champ?"

#30 Posted by Claude (16254 posts) -

I haven't even made a Club Nintendo account... and I call myself a Wii fan... tsk, tsk.

#31 Posted by DrRandle (1202 posts) -

I'm worried the mario hat won't fit...But thenh may be I could put it on my Mr. Ressetti plushie... Gah I can't decide!

When I ordered the hat, it said one size fits all. It has elastic.

I also want a Mr. Ressetti plushie now...
#33 Posted by LeoMinor (261 posts) -

I ordered the calendar.  I'll just keep it sealed and sell it in 10 years.

#34 Posted by ThomasP (1656 posts) -

I haven't even registered. I should have a pretty big hoard of coins for next year, though.

#35 Posted by JeffGoldblum (3704 posts) -

Its ok Jeff I got a calender too.

#36 Posted by dsplayer1010 (2227 posts) -

It almost makes me wish I bought more Nintendo games.

#42 Posted by King9999 (613 posts) -

I wonder if Doc has a special punch involving chocolate?

#43 Posted by cspiffo (869 posts) -

Nintendo...I hate you for making me want things I can't have..."bunch of S.O.B's" *grumble*

#44 Posted by zityz (2360 posts) -

Awesome. So that mean like what? 10 people got this thing?

#45 Posted by Reverseface (1221 posts) -

Pretty nice reward.. FO SHIZLE

#46 Posted by AgentJ (8778 posts) -

Seems that a lot of people are trying to take advantage of Nintendo's offer. The club nintendo portion is currently down for maitinence.

#47 Posted by c_rakestraw (853 posts) -

Wait, they were offering a game too? I didn't know that... I thought you'd just get the Mario hat for reaching platnium status. Well...at least I got the callender I guess. That's better than nothing.

#48 Posted by damnboyadvance (4060 posts) -

I'd take the Mario hat and sell it online. Some sucker would probably pay a reasonable amount for it.

#49 Posted by luce (4045 posts) -

Doc fight would've made sweet DLC

if only the wii supported it

#50 Posted by Apathylad (3066 posts) -

I ordered the hat. I figured the Doc Louis fight would lose it's impact after an hour at best. Plus, I much rather have a PHYSICAL item than DLC.
