Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is the second game in the Donkey Kong Country franchise developed by Retro Studios and the first made for the Wii U. The game also marks the return of David Wise, the soundtrack composer of the original SNES trilogy. The game will be released in Japan on February 13 and in North America and Europe on February 21, 2014. Retro Studio's trademark 60 frames per second gameplay also marks a return with the added benefit of a native 1080p resolution this time.
Tropical Freeze will include more more dynamic, three-dimensional levels than appeared in Donkey Kong Country Returns, and also brings back underwater stages, which haven't been seen since Donkey Kong Country 3. Players can choose to play as Donkey, Diddy or Dixie Kong. Another playable character was teased at E3 2013 by producer Kensuke Tanabe. Reggie Fils-Aime revealed that character to be Cranky Kong at the Spike VGX Awards 2013 who would be making his playable debut with the ability to pogo-bounce on his cane.
Tanabe also explained that Tropical Freeze brings back a mechanic from his very first game, Super Mario Bros. 2, in that Donkey Kong can pluck plants from the ground to reveal items.
Funky Kong is also making a return to the series but this time, with Cranky now part of the adventuring crew, he will be taking care of the item shop that debuted in the previous game.
Amazon Italy unintentionally leaked the fourth playable character's identity by posting the final European box art of the game which features Cranky Kong holding onto Donkey Kong's leg just days before the planned official reveal at the Spike VGX show.
