America had an election last night, and id Software listened: DOOM 3 is available on Steam again.

Vanilla DOOM 3, mind you, not the somewhat mangled, more expensive, and distinctly lacking proper flashlights version that was recently released, DOOM 3: BFG Edition. The original, stripped down (and moddable) DOOM 3 was removed from Steam after BFG Edition was released, but after some outcry, id Software told me it was looking into having the game reinstated in some capacity.

Mod support and better-loooking flashlights are reportedly coming to the BFG Edition in a patch, but that one will also cost you quite a bit more. BFG Edition? $29.99. Regular ol’ DOOM 3? Just $9.99.

I believe it's been on Steam for a couple days at least now. I wonder if the box copy will sync with Steam. I need to find my pewter Pinky statue..

Oh this was a worldwide nightmare.

Vanilla Doom 3 doesn't support widescreen resolutions out of the box.

Just sayin'

Hooray!

Now should I play that copy that's been sitting in my library for how many years now?

I understand the need to standby your convictions. That said, the notion that doom 3 purists are elated is pretty silly. This war was lost a long time ago.

#14 Posted by Yuccadude (16 posts) - 7 months, 11 days ago

Might have to get it after I go watch Brad's Doom videos

#15 Posted by Lazyaza (2014 posts) - 7 months, 11 days ago

When BFG is moddable, the flashlight is fixed and its on sale for mm $15? I'll consider getting it.

Mother of God.... There was a war over Doom 3? Why is it silly that people that liked the game are excited? Even if they already own it, they might like that they can still recommend it to friends or something...

You can fix that by changing some .ini files, read how here: http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Doom_3

I'm both excited by this news and depressed; I just remembered that I already own Doom 3 on Steam.

#22 Posted by RandomInternetUser (6779 posts) - 7 months, 11 days ago

$9.99? Awesome. I'm pretty sure it was $19.99 before it got taken down.

Well at least now the Doom3 apologists can be happy again. Just puzzled why steam, id software or bethesda pulled it off in the first place.

#24 Posted by jmic75 (247 posts) - 7 months, 11 days ago

A collective shrug rippled through the gaming community.

what about vice city it's still weirdly missing from steam

And cheaper! Get it if you haven't! Or wait til Christmas and get it for a dollar or something.

#29 Posted by jonnyboy (2915 posts) - 7 months, 11 days ago

Already own the ID collection, cost me 30 quid a few years back. I'll think I'll stick with the 360 version of BFG though, because A) That's where my friends are playing it and B) I don't rate my games by what kind of shadows they render.

#30 Posted by umdesch4 (729 posts) - 7 months, 11 days ago

I've been playing it recently via my original discs (and yeah, where did I put that pewter figurine?). I never finished it back in the day, so I'm doing that now. I forgot how long it was. I checked my progress against a walkthrough by the time I got part way through Delta Labs, just to reassure myself that this game does in fact end. I did enjoy a fair chunk of it, and I'm not hating the experience, but the last couple sessions (I only get about 90 minutes at a time to play it) I feel like I'm just doing it for the sake of finishing it.

#33 Posted by KlUMZeE (293 posts) - 7 months, 11 days ago

Nice to hear it, considering how disappointing the BFG edition is.

Now they should just let us combine the two to make each better, Sonic & Knuckles style.

why is it silly? I loved original Doom 3. I passed my Doom3 disks and jewel case on to my nephew so that he might "grow up right" with solid Doom3 experience and become a true gamer.

Now I get to have my original flavor Doom 3 and the BFG version too.

Don't call me silly for liking games and having a different (and equally valid) opinion than your own.

I'll call you silly for getting all up in arms when you had YEARS to repurchase it again on Steam but now only getting upset that you can't for a brief period of time. Have you even purchased it again through Steam since it's been back up? lol, exactly.

Can you not ask for the game back?

Also, there are other digital retailers than Steam, just so you know.

Plus, everybody in their right mind, who has a right mind, knew it was going to be back on Steam eventually and, as I specifically stated when the original article about this went up, it would be back up in about a month. And looky here, it's been about a month give or take a week.

Prevent market confusion. It's better than putting up with what would have been the inevitable onslaught of dumb consumers that complained that they were "mislead" by having a new title next to the cheaper, older title. It's stupid but it is 100% and it was a smart move on their part. Who did they piss off? "Fans" who had no intent of buying the old version and honestly still don't?

wow what an amazing case study in a classic straw man logical fallacy. Thanks. I can show this to people. It's educational.

#39 Edited by TPoppaPuff (209 posts) - 7 months, 11 days ago

@tourgen: How so? It's only a straw man fallacy when the position has no validity to begin with? I didn't make your position any more hollow; it was never legitimate to begin with. Even in your fantastically unique, absolute best case, and likely untrue, set of circumstances, the short temporary loss of being able to download a game off one unique online distributor when other versions are still plenty available is NOT worth the uproar. At all.

So, have you bought it again since it's been available? You better hurry, you never know when it might be taken down for five minutes again! If the answer's no, then you are clearly a hypocrite. A hypocrite would get severely overly dramatic about something, just like you did, and then once has the chance to "rectify" the situation for a paltry sum of money, refuses to take the opportunity. You said one thing, and did the opposite.

My main question is this. Why does vanilla doom, the game which is years older than BFG edition have cloud support, but BFG does not?

#43 Posted by Th3_James (2551 posts) - 7 months, 11 days ago

I've had Doom 3 on steam for several years now. The original Doom 3 has always been there for me.

#44 Posted by jasondesante (532 posts) - 7 months, 11 days ago

john carmack needs to pull a cliffy b and get the fuck out of there....possibly work for epic with tim sweeney because they would be the best programming duo of all time.....or go work for valve where work can actually be appreciated and put towards something of value instead of doom 3 BFG. what a joke that was.

It was a straw man because you weren't, and STILL aren't, addressing the point he actually made, but some other point you'd rather argue against.

Maybe you don't know what a straw man is. Here, from good ol' Wikipedia:

A straw man is a fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent's position. To "attack a straw man" is to create the illusion of having refuted a proposition by replacing it with a superficially similar yet unequivalent proposition (the "straw man"), and to refute it, without ever having actually refuted the original position.

Just to nitpick on a point here, I think that's wrong. People are allowed to be upset about situations that don't directly affect them. If, for example, I were to complain that I think the war on drugs is ridiculous, and that I think marijuana should be legal, I would be a hypocrite if I didn't immediately go to Seattle and buy some as soon as that proposition that famously passed yesterday comes into effect.

Unfortunately, I don't partake of the stuff, so I won't be doing that. But I'm really glad it's going to be legal now, and a situation that I found unjust has been rectified (or not, this is hypothetical).

Similarly, I thought it was pretty slimy the way Valve handled the Doom 3 releases lately, and I may have mentioned it at least once in these threads recently. But I own the CDs, so it doesn't affect me. I think people can still voice an opinion about shady business practices, without being hypocrites if the practice doesn't directly affect them.

Lost all respect for ID they pretty much pissed on there PC fanbase and screwed up Rage with barely any graphic options at launch then not releasing mod tools. Now Doom 3 taking it off steam because of BFG then charging 30 bucks for 3 old games sounds like something EA would do.

I cannot agree more. At launch Rage! was such a disappointment on PC. You had to mod an .ini file just to get it to look good and not have as much texture pop-in. I honestly am used to modding .ini files to make games on PC look better so that wasn't a big deal, but the lies about releasing an SDK or mod tools got me pissed. Carmack & Id never released them to this day, when they were a promise at release. I am not excited for Doom 4; I used to be. Id Tech 5 is a flop IMO. The problem is many textures are so blurry. The original Doom looks better than in certain spots of Rage. There's forums dedicated to how low res many textures are in Rage! aka Id Tech 5. Fuck Id, and thank you Patrick for being on top of them for their bullshit.

That's good news. Although the BFG Edition is in HD and the extra features are pretty cool, I still prefer playing the original Doom 3. Playing this game always reminds me of the video review made by Greg Kasavin back in 2004.
