Doom 3's graphics were groundbreaking for it's time.
Doom 3 started development in 2001 and was released in August of 2004 on the PC, and a year later on the Xbox. The idea was to remake the original game with new elements, like better sound and graphics along with a story.  Professional writers were hired for the story.

Doom 3 used groundbreaking technology.  It had the best graphics for its time, and it was one of the first games to support true surround sound.  So if you had good speakers or headphones, you would hear that zombie creeping up on you like it was behind you.

Plot

The story of Doom 3 is told from a first person perspective and takes place on Mars in the year 2145. A military-industrial corporation has set up a scientific research facility to develop fields such as teleportation, biological research and advanced weapons design. The Marine Corps also stations troops on mars for security and the fact that the UAC (Union Aerospace Corp) does alot of unique military testing, like weapons (i.e. the BFG9000). The major science being experimented with at this facility is teleportation. Unfortunately the teleportation experiments end up opening a gateway to Hell, resulting in a catastrophic invasion by demons. The player, a lone space marine, must fight through the base and find a way to stop the demons from attacking Earth. This story is basically an remake or reimaging of the original DOOM. The marine manages to fight his way into hell itself, and then from there obtains an artifact called the soul cube. This device is taken from a guardian. The player teleports back to Mars, to learn more of the origins of this hellish invasion. The Soul Cube is then used to kill the mastermind behind the invasion. the Cyberdemon.

Gameplay

Doom 3 is a first person shooter which naturally means it has numerous guns and weapons available for the player to use. In fact the game has within it 10 different firearms ranging from conventional shotguns and pistols to the various experimental weapons that can be found. The players objective in Doom 3 is to simply pass through the games levels without dying. There are however various enemies intent on stopping the player from achieving that goal. Such enemies include zombies and various demons which can kill the player in several different ways, for example while one demon might throw plasma-based fireballs at the player another may try clawing the player to death.

The levels themselves within Doom 3 are mostly very dark and designed to be very creepy which adds to the atmosphere and horror element a lot. The player does have access to a flashlight however they cannot have both the flashlight and a weapon out at the same time meaning the player must choose between defending themselves or being able to see where they can go. In addition to the darkly lit levels things such as blood and corpses are everywhere which again adds to the horror aspect of the game. Throughout the game the player also receives radio transmissions from various non-player characters and these are again aimed at frightening the player and adding to the atmosphere and in fact they do very a good job of achieving their desired goal. Finally the character has a PDA with them throughout the course of the game. This device is used to store security codes and can also be used to watch videos you find throughout the game as well as emails that you may find.

Reception

Doom 3 was a critical and commercial success for Id Software and by the beginning of 2007 over 3.5 million copies of Doom 3 had been sold making it one of Id Software’s most popular games. The game engine for Doom 3 was successful enough to be licensed out for the use of other developers and it was used in games such as Prey and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.  The greatest praise for Doom 3 was for the graphics of the game.  Despite this, Doom 3 did receive some criticisms from critics and fans.

These issues were mainly towards id's approaches to both the storytelling and gameplay of the game, which seemed outdated compared to modern first person shooters.  A common gripe regarding the gameplay was the need to switch back and forth between the flash light and the gun, and people often said "Don't they have duct tape in the future?" Because of this, fans created a "duck tape" mod for the PC version, which allowed the flashlight to be on while the character was holding a gun.
