Did I really just see "Pwned"? Really?

Don't get me wrong, I am pumped to play DOTA 2.  I played the original Defense of the Ancients way back when it was just starting to get popular and loved it.  I enjoy the MOBA or Hero Arena Games or whatever you wanna call it; I'm actively playing League of Legends right now.  But I was watching the stream last night (or early this morning) and when someone killed another player, it still said "pwned".  Now, I was okay with the original DOTA doing this because it was a mod that someone created and wasn't anything officially released.  Something dumb like that was easily overlooked.  But now that Valve is releasing this game proper, in my humble opinion, stuff like that is just simply lame.  I mean, I'm still gonna play DOTA 2, but just seeing that kinda irked me the wrong way.

it says "pwned" when you kill someone?

#3 Posted by cyraxible (696 posts) -

So it was okay before but now it's not okay because you say so?

What's wrong with keeping an affectation like that? Sure it's silly and kind of stupid but that game seems to be all that too.

#4 Posted by jozzy (2042 posts) -

Aparently the entire game is just a straight port of the mod, so this fits.... I guess...

#5 Posted by Cretaceous_Bob (527 posts) -

They took DOTA and put a 2 on it.

The fuck do you expect?

I found your problem, right there. Don't bitch about things like that. It says "pwned"... big f-ing deal!

Urgh, there should be no issue here.

BC2's use of "Epic Fail" is worse.

#9 Posted by SockLobster (456 posts) -

I don't know what you're talking about but it irked me in all the right ways.

#10 Posted by jorbear (2517 posts) -

They will fix it before the game comes out.

Or else I will "teach" Mr. Newell with his own knives!

#11 Posted by Jokers_Wild (214 posts) -

It's puerile, sure, but any misgivings are instantly washed away the moment I hear "M-M-M-MONSTER KILL!"

#12 Posted by Galiant (2195 posts) -

What does that really matter? I'm kinda bummed they're doing the "denial" thing that I dislike so much. I wish they'd refined the formula a little more, like LoL did, instead of just copying everything from the mod.

#13 Edited by ProfessorEss (7469 posts) -

I'm indifferent to peoples hatred towards the term "Pwned".

I'm sure DOTA 2 will have more than enough other jargon that people deem cool until they deem it lame six months later.

#14 Posted by UnrealDP (1225 posts) -

Yeah it rubs me the wrong way too, but it is kind of a throwback to the original DOTA and it kinda gives me some nostalgia from the days of playing DOTA.

They know their audience.
Their sad, sad audience.

@Galiant: Stripping away mechanics (especially popular ones) isn't necessarily an improvement.
#17 Posted by KarlPilkington (2769 posts) -

I still pronounce it pawned in my head.

#18 Posted by CaLe (4039 posts) -

I heard a legitimate Ph.D neuro scientist use the term pwned in casual conversation just recently.

#19 Posted by Bigrhyno (505 posts) -

My interest in the game dwindled the more I saw blank pwned blank's head. I really hope there is an option in the menu to replace that with something different. Just because it was a part of the original game doesn't mean Valve had to keep it that way.

#20 Posted by Henny (108 posts) -

I guess he is fine with the overly dramatic Unreal announcer? Talk about being picky. I guess being a Valve game disqualifies you from using internet terminology. Next up on the word crusade: fragged.

League of Legends was more fun to play for me than the original DotA (which I never really got into) because they changed just enough for it to become much easier to get into and therefore more enjoyable to me. I was hoping DOTA2 would similarly change enough to make it more accessible to a broader audience, rather than going the route they seem to have taken of catering to the people that say things like "we don't want new players to play our game". I literally got such a comment in a forum thread just a moment ago for stating that I didn't like the "denial" mechanic.

That said, we haven't seen everything, and maybe the rest of DOTA2 has modes or rankings or whatever that fixes my issues. I'm really looking forward to seeing what Valve will do with DOTA2.

They are making it easier to get into. If you've played dota you should know that having stat-tracking and match making based on your performance is infinity times better than DotA 1 already was, and that's just one of the things they're adding to make it more accessible.

I got a random shirt from woot.com that had "Born to pwn" scribbled on a helmet and became sick. I immediately threw it in the pile of shit to send to goodwill.

As long as Valve doesn't add stupid shit like S2 does to HoN, I'm ok. Flamboyant announcer, unicorn rampage, pimp slayer etc. I'm looking at you.

If you're going to whine about internet slang in the wrong places then point it at BBC's new gameshow Epic Win.

#32 Posted by CornBREDX (5828 posts) -

I am outraged and I don't even have any interest in DOTA!

No, seriously, look at my face. Outraged.

This.

Denying increases the skill ceiling. They're going for the hardcore audience, so I'm sure the game will play as similarly to DotA/HoN as possble.

That being said, I'm sure there'll also be a 'casual mode' where denying does nothing and you don't lose gold when you die.

I most certainly will not, i'm going to sit here and play minecraft while thinking about how lame BF3 is going to be, and you can't do anything about it! HA!

Do they still have the Unreal announcer or an equivalent for killing streaks?

He gives a pretty legitimate reason why it was ok before and not now. Learn to read before you post.

Dota was a mod created by a dude while dota 2 is (supposed to be) a professional product made by professional people.

Imo it is almost as bad as bc2 using epic fail.

@Crixaliz: Yes, which is weird considering this is going to be a retail product. I'm sure Epic wouldn't be too happy that their announcer sounds were ripped and placed into this game.

yeah well fragging comes from a real life term in case you didn't know

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fragging

whereas pwned is slang from a video game that should rot in hell

#43 Posted by DystopiaX (5352 posts) -

Dota 2 is a straight port of Dota 1 with improved graphics/interface/game client/launcher stuff. Why are you surprised?

#44 Edited by cyraxible (696 posts) -
@NickL:  That was merely a joke you presumptive ass.

This silly, albeit stupid, affectation has precedence in the series so just because it's being made by "professional people" doesn't necessarily mean it is going out the window.

There is no written rule for this so really this is all based on his decision that it isn't appropriate.

But now that Valve is releasing this game proper, in my humble opinion, stuff like that is just simply lame.  I mean, I'm still gonna play DOTA 2, but just seeing that kinda irked me the wrong way.

Y'know, phrases like "in my humble opinion" and "kinda irked me the wrong way" indicate that this is all because he's decided it's lame and bothers him is why it should be removed.

Can't we have a discussion without ad hominem?
#45 Posted by nazer858 (131 posts) -

Yeah I think it's goofy but its been a part of dota forever, why kill it now

#46 Posted by NickL (2247 posts) -

@cyraxible: You are terrible at jokes then.

And just because something really dumb has precedence in a series doesn't mean it should stay in the series.

#47 Edited by TheMustacheHero (6655 posts) -

HoN has "pwned" too. It was in the original DoTA, gotta keep it the same so no one complains.

@Galiant:  Oh you mean making a game for casuals? I think they implemented a casual-esk mode too...

#48 Posted by cyraxible (696 posts) -
@NickL: I can deal with that.

Because you think something is dumb doesn't mean everyone else thinks it's stupid.

Why can't this stay in? You have to give me an answer less vague and lazy than it's just "dumb".

I have a feeling this will just end in an impasse.
#49 Posted by Dizzyhippos (1538 posts) -

By keeping it the same they annoy maybe 10 people, they change that and its the kind of thing that everyone that played DOTA bitches about

#50 Posted by Daveyo520 (6930 posts) -

Ya, they need to change that. it is not like it is hard.
