@birthdaysuitburns: A coach is a truly excellent idea. I appreciate your input, mate. I'll talk this over with my co-creator and see what we might make of it. Thanks again.
Dota 2

The official free-to-play sequel to the Warcraft III custom scenario that originally popularized the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena sub-genre.
Official DOTA 2 GiantBomb Tournament
@birthdaysuitburns: But just playing in a competitive setting gives you quite a bit of experience and with us trying to provide commentary for every game that one can help as the guideline what went wrong in those games. We could adjust the commentary in those Newbie games to more reflect advice to also help people who just want to watch and learn.
At the end of the day that is what coaching sessions are anyways, a coach watching over someone play and giving pointers and thoughts.
I acknowledge that it is quite different and maybe the idea of having it 'public' within the community is weird but thanks for the input, it will be considerd.
Not sure if we are going to be able to act on it, but that would be a fun thing to do.

@ellenpudge: Need you to accept my friends-invite on steam in order to discuss a number of matters regarding the tournament. I'm Blackmoore on steam. Also need you to give us your team tag.
@sixghost: Welcome to the tournament, mate. I'll reserve a spot for you in each bracket for now until more people have signed up. Can you give me your team tag? Also team name.
@finlayheslop: Welcome to the tournament, mate. I see you supplied me with a contact through steam. I gotta' ask, though; are any of your member giant bomb members? If not don't worry, we'll still let you play, but we're likely to prioritize actual members of the community over your lot if we should get too many teams in the listings.
@do_the_manta_ray: Accepted. Our tag will be GAF
@do_the_manta_ray: Hi just a quick question: What's the schedule going to look like? Will it be set up so that you will just give us a deadline to play our round 1 match? So we can organize between the other team on exactly when we want to meet up, or will we be given a specific time/date and we just have to appear?
Hi! Sign us up for the low-level bracket please.

@wunder_: First of all, welcome to the tournament, mate. God bless you and your fellow starcraft(ians?).
To answer your question; we will try and be flexible with the dates for the games but as it was the downfall of the last tournament, we unfortunately can't not let you choose the date of the games among yourselves. Here's how the process will work; after speaking to the captain of both teams (and the casters, etc.), we ( in the committee) will set up a few recommended times for when you might play. Finally, we'll simply inquire with you and the team you'll be facing if said date is acceptable. And that's that.
We'll make sure that you know when you'll be playing a week ahead so you'll have plenty of time to prepare yourself.
By the way, please send me a private message either on here, or on steam (I'll add you), telling me when you think you'd be ready to start playing (just a guess is sufficient at this point), and if there's any servers that you, as a team, cannot play on (due to ping, etc).
Have fun, mate.
@do_the_manta_ray: Thanks! That sounds alright, we have a few people who might be inflexible but hopefully our 6th member can work as a stand-in when our full team isn't available. The worst server for me, personally is EU. While I live in SEA I still regularly play US West/East with not much issue (200-300 ping).
You reckon he even knows about it? Haven't watched Daily DOTA in the last, few days. Any chance they mentioned it on the stream?
So, I'm thinking of starting team for the low bracket and inviting a friend who's pretty new to Dota 2 but has some experience with the original DotA, so he has a very low win count compared to his skill, less than 10 wins at the moment. He's a GB user for a few years (@soonho) but he's not really active in the community. In the spirit of full disclosure I'm going to asking him to make his matches public so everyone, especially the tournament managers can decide whether he should be allowed in the the low bracket or not. In my opinion he plays like someone with 100-150 wins, he's fast and knows most of the characters but is more or less oblivious to the meta-game and plays in a rather individualist fashion (also has the worst ping in my friend list). I'm proposing he should be counted as a 120 win player.
@haroldonvu: We appreciate your honesty, mate. I feel that it would, indeed, be a good notion to actually take a look at one of his earlier matches in order to properly judge his placement. Could you as such, provide me with his steam info? That said, from your description, I don't think we should have any problems including him in the listings by marking him as a 120-win player. Simply ensure that the rest of you adapt your overall, cumulative win amount to 400 or less as the rules state. Hope to see you and your friends joining up soon, mate.
@do_the_manta_ray: his Steam and DotaBuff information. This was one of his best matches and we played together.
@haroldonvu: I checked out the info provided; that's completely alright, mate. We'll sign him up as having 110 wins. Work your party around that and submit the entire things to the listings once you're done. If you've got any questions on this matter or any other, feel free to ask me.

@doc: Well, you're more than welcome to join up, mate. That said; you're lacking quite a bit of information there. Need regions for the different players, as well as their preferred role. You also need to add a team tag besides a name. You also need to give me your team captain's steam account so I can discuss the schedule, regions, etc. with him.
So that's some stuff you should add to the list, but I'll sign you up, fella. Welcome to the tournament. If you got any questions, please; ask me on here.
More low level teams!
Need moar noobs! I'm gonna provide info for my team soon. I'll also hang out and the chat channel and call the other new guys a bunch of chickens and lazy bums. Tough love.
@haroldonvu: Yay! Encourage the people you see in the chat channel to come and check it out, we only have 3(?) low-level teams signed up, need more!
@doc: Gee.......
Gee
@do_the_manta_ray I think everything is solid, let me know what else you need.
@whitebrightknight I'm afraid to spoil the ending
Theres a Giantbomb DotA 2 steam group? Oh my god, I may have finally found people to play DotA 2 with. From my experiences thus far giantbombers are the nicest online gamers and the least likely to be raging douchebags, but I could be wrong because it is DotA!!! I will be tuning in for this tournament for sure, and will definitely be seeking out the GB group. Nice duders.
Can these replace Daily Dota for a few weeks? With Kessler and Shoemaker commentating the matches?
I am not sure if they would be interested at all in that, and i think that might be really tricky with scheduling seeing as daily dota is kinda on a set hour each day.
Which kinda goes against the semi flexible times we are trying to have.
@doc: Alright, added your team. Also, fuck you for that team tag.
@davidwitten22: Really appreciate the enthusiasm, mate. Hope you enjoy it.
@finlayheslop: Welcome to the tournament, mate. I see you supplied me with a contact through steam. I gotta' ask, though; are any of your member giant bomb members? Pezzle and I both are. We don't really frequent the forums but we watch the crew and pay our dues. The others, admittedly, are not. :/
Team : Me He
Tag : MH
Bracket : High
Players :
(Me) - 560 wins - Cap & Carry / Support - EU West
ded game - 839 wins - Carry / Ganker - EU West
Louk - 534 wins - Carry / Offlane - US West
Elgo - 376 wins - Support - EU West
ab - 954 wins - Carry - EU West
Koubs - 1703 wins - Support / Ganker - EU West
US East is sorta fine for us, US West is near unplayable ('cept for Louk). I'm the only proper duder in the team, sadly.
@kolh: Alright, fella. Adding you and your team to the listings. That said, if you end up winning with 5 carries, I'll tear my hair out.
Seriously, mind; can you provide me with accurate position-information for each player? The casters will have to know, and we are contemplating building two "dream-teams" out of the GB members for a single set of games after the tournament (for those who are interested).
Welcome to the tournament.
@merciless: That's quite alright, mate. We are trying to encourage folk to take notice of the site, after all. Would be great if we'd manage to get your friends interested in this community of ours as a consequence of the tournament, but if not, too bad. I believe I did ask Pezzle for you to provide me with some information as to when you guys could start playing, though.
@do_the_manta_ray: How is the low level tournament shaping up? I only see one, possible two teams. Will the tournament happen even if there's only 3 or 4 teams listed?
@do_the_manta_ray : I defaulted our postions since we don't really have a structured team, but i'll edit the post to be more accurate somehow.
By the way, I've set myself as captain since i'm the only one using the forums, but ded game will do most of our picks
@winternet: That is a good question, and I'm afraid, something which I'd have to speak about in depth with Cheap. That said; I would like to make a low bracket tournament no matter how small it turns out being. So if four teams are available, we'll have ourselves a little tournament. With a bit of luck, it'll grow larger in the future. Thankfully, the high-bracket is shaping up quite well.
With that in mind, IF we only get 3 teams in the low bracket, I'm considering inviting them to the high bracket with an advantage, say opponents not being able to ban any of their heroes, or possibly getting an automatic win in a 3-game set. That's all up for discussion, mind, and it's only an in case scenario. And as of yet, there's still plenty of time, with a good 30 people in our sister thread looking for a team.
Quick edit as I forgot to add the last part.
@do_the_manta_ray: Maybe prolong the sign-up schedule for the low bracket? With E3 happening, people will have less time to dotaing, especially the ones that are still in their early goings on Dota 2.
@winternet: That's also something I've been considering; it would, however, almost certainly remove any chance of the lower-bracket teams entering the high-bracket instead. This would be a bit of a gamble as if no more low-level teams sign up, these guys could end up completely left out. It's something I'm going to have to think on.

We should be able to figure it out based on who's playing what, as there are teams out there (EG immediately comes to mind) that swap positions every series. Default positions are nice, but our cast isn't suddenly going to go off the rails if they're playing something else.

What style of brackets will we have? I skimmed the OP again but couldn't find anything clear besides "Bo1 except for semis/finals being Bo3." If we're going with Bo1, is it a double-elimination bracket? If it's single-elimination and Bo1, I feel like it's far too unforgiving. I think, ideally, we'd have Bo3 and DE, but I can understand if that might be too much for people to be forced to commit to.
Side thought: Although I don't want to put any more burden on the organizers nor do I suggest we put any work on any official Giant Bomb staff, one thing I do think would be a fun "prize" is getting The Daily Dota team to do a commentary the final matches. Especially for the low/novice bracket, this could be a fun (but not cruel) way to show off the results.
@ajamafalous: Heey, you're up before noon for once, I'm so proud. I do realize that positions aren't set in stone, but I still believe it to be benificial for us to have some general information about each team, which is why I asked for it. Fellas already updated their post and done is done.
To your actual question: it will largely depend on how many teams sign up for the tournament. If the lower bracket remains as small with 5 teams or less; then it'll be Bo3 and single-elimination; should it, for whatever reason, grow exponentially, we'll likely reduce it to Bo1 and double-elimination; with the semi-finals and finals being Bo3.
The higher bracket is looking to be Bo3 and double-elimination, but should we get a couple of more teams over the next, few days, we might opt for a single-elimination style. I'd like to do a Bo5 for the real finals, but we'll have to wait and see whether that's possible.
@maidenmatt: Definitely. We had intended to make one for this tournament initially, but decided that it'd be too convoluted and would spread the teams too thin across each bracket. With a bit of luck, this tournament will go well, the next one will be bigger in every respect; thus also including a middle tier.
@extomar: I appreciate the suggestion, mate. We actually have something similair planned, all that's needed is for us to take the plunge and contact Brad and the rest to see how they're willing to participate. I reckon we'll only do so after the sign-ups have ended, however.
@do_the_manta_ray: Sorry to dump more stress/complications on you guys, but have you figured out a way to decide on the server, should two teams reach an impasse? What happens when an EU team refuses to play on East/West and a US West (or East) team refuses to play EU?
@wunder_: This was actually already adressed in the Q&A section, duder. Take yourself a look.
7. In terms of teams with players on different continents or a team playing against a team from a different continent, how will the server location be selected?
Server locations will be selected after speaking to each captain who will report to us each player's ability or disability to play in any area, ensuring that we can find the optimal situation to balance it out for all players involved. Once the date has been determined, we'll ask both teams to test our server choice, so that on the date of the game itself, there'll be no problems.
To elaborate a bit further on your won question, though. If we cannot ensure optimal ping for both teams, we'll simply have to ensure that both are equally disabled; whilst attempting to keep it to a minimum. If, despite our best efforts, someone refuses to play, well, they'll either have to get a subsitute for that player, or forfeit the match. Not much else than can be done.
A quick note; tomorrow'll be the last day to sign up; so if you're still interested in doing so, get on it. We've got 2 more teams signing up for the lower bracket confirmed. More would sure be nice, though. Same goes for the higher one.
Also, first two sets of matches are set up. Come check 'em out under "High Bracket Schedule"!

Matilha, Portuguese for "(Canine) Pack" and pronounced Mah-TEE-lya, already exists as a lusophone Steam group for quite some time as a haven for friendly and mature (kinda) players to play co-op games on a rage-free and familiar environment. Dota 2 is going to be our first foray into the realm of the PvP as a group. So far we mostly played against bots but we'll try to get some Matchmaking pratice before the main event. Our times zones are GMT-3 and -4 so we can play during european night time or pacific time early afternoon on weekends. US East and SA are our best server options but we can try to work something out if necessary. Positions might change slightly and especially our choice on who will play Carry and Soft Support depends on the strategy we pick and the beginning of a match. Feel free to contact me on Steam or here, and send me PM if you need my e-mail. We I hope more teams sign-up for the low bracket today.
*as estimated by the Tournament organizers.
EDIT: included a substitute player as authorized by the event organization
EDIT 2: Substitute player asked to leave the team. I talked to @cheappoison about signing up a new substitute but I'll post his info later.
EDIT 3: New substitute player included and team positions and favorite heroes updated.
