It’s a good week when I can report the release date for a new Double Fine Productions game.

The studio has been putting out new games consistently over the past two years, and that trend will continue on February 1, as the Kinect-fueled Double Fine Happy Action Theater has now been dated.

The date was announced on Twitter by ye ol’ studio head Tim Schafer. The price point isn't known yet.

“Better achieve your life's goals asap,” he said, “because come 2/1 your priorities will change.”

I’m on it, Tim.

I wonder if this is something that would be released on the App section of the dashboard, and not the game section, since, from all of the footage I've seen of it, it doesn't seem very...game-y.

Sweet

But is it really a game? Like, what is this thing?

#10 Edited by DarthOrange (2648 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

So when is Microsoft going to quit the foreplay and just buy Double Fine?

#11 Posted by LoktarOgar (248 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

When's the next multiplatform game? =/
Costume Quest can only last you so long, even with DLC, and Stacking worked far better in concept than execution for me.

#12 Posted by Branthog (7051 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

Hopefully all of these money-raking shenanigans of the last few months will result in them eventually getting back to making games.

#13 Posted by NekuCTR (1627 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

Well Double Fine, you lost me. I guess someone will like it, and it gets them in way better graces with Microsoft. I'll probably be sitting this one out nonetheless.

Finally, a GD Kinect "game" I might actually get some mileage out of.

#15 Posted by TheMasterDS (1245 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

I wonder what comes next. I mean, there's no Double Fine games announced after Action Theatre, right?

Doesnt look like a game or anything, but this is a must buy for me. My kids will lose their mind here.

#19 Posted by Tesla (1587 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

No Kinect here, but god bless Double Fine for attempting to make more than shovelware for the platform.

#20 Posted by captainanderson (246 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

I wonder how much Microsoft is paying Double Fine to keep making Kinect games.

#21 Posted by Mento (1694 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

Kinect games always make for good QLs. I'm hoping some fellows from Double Fine show up to participate.

Microsoft should be paying GB for being one of the few media outlets that makes the Kinect palatable, if unintentionally.

As a Kinect owner and long-time fanboy of Schafer and Doublefine I was really excited for this, but I got my son Once Upon A Monster for Christmas and it is easily the worst controlling Kinect game I've played to date.

Now I'm pretty skeptical about it.

#23 Posted by EightBitShik (1278 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

I moved my 360 back to my room which has zero room for the kinect....I don't think I'll be taking it out unless I know more because that screen shot looks like shit.

#24 Posted by Andy_117 (143 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

Geez guys. How do you complain when a studio infamous for its incredibly long production times, steps it up and starts making games rapidly? Wasn't this there whole goal; to, like, make lots of smaller, varying games, but at a more rapid pace?

This is five for five, now, and that's fucking incredible. Obviously each one is headed by a different creative lead or they'd not be able to get them all done on time, but frankly, after the back-to-back release of Iron Brigade (a game about mechs shooting each other) and Once Upon a Monster (a Seaseme Street game about muppets learning to be happy), is it really any surprise that their next project was... like... this thing?

And the next will be different from this. And the next. And the next. That's their design principle; small games, rapid release, unique concepts. They're doing that. With admirable gusto. And you still find ways to complain.

Considering Double Fine has been busting their ass all over the place in the past year (Stacking + DLC, Iron Bridade + DLC, Once Upon A Monster, Steam Achievements + Mac version of Psychonauts, Psychonauts iPhone app) I'm perfectly okay with them taking a bit of a backseat and making something with so few restrictions and making the Kinect a better experience for those that have it.

However, I don't have a Kinect. So while I'm glad it exists, I'm dying to hear about what else they're working on.

#26 Posted by MormonWarrior (1660 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

Oh yeah, this thing. It sounded interesting when they were talking about it on a Bombcast episode or something a while ago. Sounded like sheer insanity, which I can get behind, and like they're focusing on the weird buggy things on Kinect and exploiting them.

Mind you, I haven't enjoyed a single one of Double Fine's games before, but hey. Good on them.

Trailer for this looks bat-shit insane.

That's really sad to hear. From GB's play of it I didn't get the impression that was going to be an issue. It seemed such a good fit for kids otherwise.

This looks awesome to me. A way to make people think they are losing their minds.

#30 Posted by Libb (55 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

I am so stoked to get my friends drunk and mess around with this.

#31 Posted by ALavaPenguin (140 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

I will get this!

#32 Posted by AxleFGK (743 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

its just the playroom mode from the eyetoy only on rapid fire.... the kinect is just the eyetoy 2.0

#33 Posted by Suigyoken (183 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

How can anyone hate it when the game makes it so the floor is lava?... Come on, THE FLOOR IS LAVA! i demand a drunk quick look.

I think you've cracked the code.

Everytime I read double fine i hear Jack Black in my head going "DOUBLE FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE!"

#36 Posted by Castiel (1955 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

I miss the old Double Fine that made "real" games.

Where's Psychonauts 2 Tim? Where is it?

Cheaper for Microsoft to use them as outside contractors. No paying for health care, retirement, etc.

On the game itself: Some of these look like blatant rip-offs of demos indie Kinect devs did months ago.

#39 Posted by Sooty (6796 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

Really Double Fine? Really?

#40 Posted by spartanlolz92 (511 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

i hope the studio doesnt go the way of rare there games are so awesom sadly a litttle too quirky for there own good

id like to see what an fps made by tim shacfer would look like hes great with comedy have it be a satire of the genre and i would buy it in a heart beat

#41 Posted by siavm (71 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

Either most of you like motion controlled shovelware or your blinded by the fact double fine is making it. This is going to be crap. Kinect is awful. The only redeeming thing about it is dance central. And if you say other wise, try to convince me that going 9 feet back and waving like a crazy person is easier and more convenient than using a controller.

#42 Posted by Mechageekzilla (10 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

I never thought a day would come that I would stop caring when a new Double Fine game was announced, but here it is.

This direction of game development must be making them money so I am happy for them, but I just cannot stop wishing they were making something else entirely.

#43 Posted by Moncole (633 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

Gonna wait for the QL

#44 Posted by KamikazeCaterpillar (1177 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

Finally I can justify a kinect.

#45 Posted by MeatSim (9537 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

The only game on Kinect I really wanna play.

#46 Posted by KGIY94 (11 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

Schafer is TRYING to push forward a Psychonauts sequel but he can't find a publisher. These small, downloadable games are all they can afford at this moment.

But Ron Gilbert is working on a "secret" project for DF, and we all know what Gilbert + Schafer equals...

#47 Posted by Tebbit (4380 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

Wait, I thought my subscription fee removed the ads from this website!

In all seriousness though folks, Double Fine is a great guy, great guy.

#48 Posted by D_W (960 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

I have no interest in buying anything Kinect related, but I do have interest in watching the people of Whiskey Media and their friends at Double Fine make asses of themselves for the amusement of people via internet web base video media. So I do hope that regardless of the quality of the product so absurd and entertaining footage will be produced for it.

hows about my trenched dlc before you work on that crappy camera bs

#50 Posted by AzHP (152 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago

I can't believe this game was developed in San Francisco. Don't they know none of us have that sort of room in our house? =(
