I can. Just tap the spacebar at the pinnacle of your jump.
It's a common misconception that you can't because there's no easy mode in real life, and the timing needs to be so exact, which is really hard to achieve from a first person perspective.

I used to think it was possible when I was really young to jump off of some object while in freefall. Like, "Oh, if a plane is crashing, I'll just grab a chair and jump out, and just before hitting the ground, I'll jump up off the chair, and land unharmed."
The really rad thing is going back to Gamespot and talking to the people who still think it's possible.
