If you're getting the PC version, you have to apparently download a high res textures pack on launch day if you're using DX11.

Just letting everybody know just in case they don't tell you that when the game comes out.

#2 Posted by Dejkrigeren (384 posts) -

Is this only for retail or is it for steam as well?
I can see why they would do it, with limited disc space and all, and it wont hurt the people that are actually capable of running it but it is still kind of wierd.

#3 Posted by Doctorchimp (4067 posts) -

....weird

Is that why the fucking demo crashed and froze on me?

Oh well this Signature Edition business and DLC on day one made me a bit wary, I'll pick it up next year in an Ultimate Edition off a Steam sale.

Well ok... we're doing things like that now. Great.

Console versions.

EDIT: So this doesn't bother me so much. Kind of ridiculous though... (better?)

It's better than not having anything at all.

And since that's the way most studio treat PC games, I'm glad as hell Bioware put in the extra time to actually package the files and put it up.
#7 Posted by Claude (16254 posts) -

I wonder if Skyrim will work like that? Not that I would be able to run something with that much punch.

#8 Posted by davidwitten22 (1708 posts) -

I thought the title was a joke about the game having low-res textures or something.

What this actually is is kind of worse?

#9 Posted by dragonzord (811 posts) -

No one asks for a source?

@Cirdain: It wasn't a question...I didn't get it either. You're lucky he said anything, he often just quotes another user without actually saying anything for himself.

To be fair I didn't know what the hell was going on with that either, looking at his blue username I thought it was a weird underhanded comment about how consoles won this time against the PC version...
#12 Posted by HaltIamReptar (2029 posts) -

To be fair, the first one didn't come with any high-res textures.

#13 Posted by CaptainObvious (2992 posts) -

That's fucked up.

#14 Posted by LiquidPrince (15833 posts) -
@Cirdain:  I meant, that I was looking forward to the console version, so that didn't concern me. You have to read into it a little, while in the proper context.

Your point being what? I post only with quotes when the person I'm quoting has accurately described my feelings on the subject and I have nothing to add. Would it please you if I added a "this", or a "truth" comment on the end?

I bloody hope not! If I have to download half the game I might as well buy the bloody thing digitally - the reason I want it on disc is a) because my internet is appalling and I'm not waiting 2 freaking days WITHOUT INTERNET because I'm downloading, and b) because if they pull the high rez textures or the whole game off of the web, cause they become even more cheap and cba to host it, I still have the game.

If I'm buying a freaking game I want it all on a disc thank you.
#16 Posted by Gumby (229 posts) -

As long as they don't charge it as DLC, I'm fine with it. . . xD

#17 Posted by phrosnite (3518 posts) -

WOW, that's weird...
High textures can use any DX10 video card, right? For Very High you will need DX11.

#18 Posted by blackbird415 (777 posts) -

Thats pretty weird, but okay. Im sure theres a reason for it

Um, yeah. The game will also come with a blow-up doll of Flemeth, so that players can really get into that mature storytelling.

What would please me, and everyone else, is if you didn't do that at all unless you have something original to say. It's essentially spam.

Not really. Remember how crappy the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion textures were? People had to make their own high-texture packs for that game just to make the graphics bearable.

Posting isn't necessarily about having original things to say... It's a discussion, and when I agree with what someone has said, I can quote them, which is implying that I agree with that sentiment. So you're saying no one should post anything unless it's original? Look at any thread and you'll have people reiterating what the person above them just said. Do you consider that spam? I see no difference in just quoting people.

@MB:  We should just ban quote pyramids and empty quoting period. It serves no purpose and gets out of hand really quickly.
@LiquidPrince: Is it really that hard to explain why you agree with a user? The forum should always ferment good discussions and empty quoting just leads to abuse so quickly that it isn't funny anymore.

Yes please. It annoys me when people just constantly empty quote in my topics.

@ZombiePie: That sounds good, let's work on it.
@LiquidPrince: No more empty quotes or quoting users and then saying "+1" or "This" or some other inane comment. Consider this to be effective immediately and we'll work on getting something put into the forum rules/FAQ docs. Thanks.

@ZombiePie:@MB: I never partake in pyramids. I just quote single people who have said what I wanted to say, and I don't do it THAT often, but sure I get where you're coming from. Just a bit of friendly advice however (and not the kind of friendly advice where I look at you all shifty eyed and I say something with an undercurrent of a threat, but genuine friendly advice) make sure not to start becoming so strict on things like this. It's the little things that differentiate this forum from the ones on say Gamespot. Moderator lenience towards these things is what makes Giantbomb more fun then other sites. But if it does get out of hand, then yeah, I get it.

@LiquidPrince: @MB:
Anyway.. Back on topic.

I dont think my PC would take running the ffull textures well anyway. I'd probably just stck with medium, my rig isn't that amazing.

The source is a live Q&A with the lead designer.

If they couldn't fit it on the disc it's better then not having the option of high-res textures. Textures take up a lot of space.

@LiquidPrince:  It would be an informal rule in place to avoid or delay a bigger problem. It would be dealt with like "first" comments on videos in that no warnings, suspensions, or bannings would be handed for users violating the rule but the comments would still get deleted.

#40 Posted by TorMasturba (1095 posts) -

Feels like a pain in the ass that we've pre-downloaded it to find that we'll still be doing some downloading on the release date. And living in the UK we have to wait a few days more before we get to press play. Ah well...

#41 Posted by MrKlorox (11197 posts) -

Awesome. That's a way to say "fuck you" to the size limitations of DVD9 without ridiculous compression or extra discs.

At least they haven't placed it behind a price tag. High Res Textures DLC, anyone?

#44 Posted by FritzDude (2249 posts) -

Watching the live stream today i can confirm that the texture pack will come out at or before the game is released on march 8th, since the game got midnight launch etc. And no it dont costs money, only Activition would come up with that stupid idea. Or maybe capcom would have it on the retail disc that needs to be unlocked with a key that you need to buy.

#45 Posted by Pinworm45 (4088 posts) -

Thank god this thread was saved from that guy empty quoting, it mighta gone offtopic or something if it wasn't.

Oh also, Bioware may make a great game, but their handling of basically everything else is a complete and utter disaster.

#46 Posted by LiquidPrince (15833 posts) -
@ZombiePie:  Yeah, sounds good to me.
#47 Posted by Chris2KLee (2328 posts) -

Are the high res textures only for DX11? If so I'll probably pass anyways since my system doesn't run DX 11 well.

#48 Posted by Marz (5641 posts) -
@Doctorchimp:  Bioware made an official post about the dx11 not working properly in the PC demo causing performance problems and crashing, said it was fixed in the retail version.
#49 Posted by Tahnit (139 posts) -

I heard it was coming out Monday before the release of the game. I am sure they don't want their servers being crushed with people downloading the high res texture pack on release day.

#50 Posted by Shinjitsu (28 posts) -

I assume this is for digital releases only.  Not surprising in the least. If you don't have a DX11 card why would you want to download an extra 4 gigs worth of useless textures.
