wow, racism, jk. I usually use the human nobles, however any race is good, use whatever you want.

#4 Posted by MonkeyMelon (217 posts) -
@The_Laughing_Man:  I will most likely play through this multiple times, but just wondered if there are any down/up sides to the races I should know about.
#5 Posted by Jadeskye (4366 posts) -

they're all good. i enjoy playing as a snarky elf so when humans look down on me i have a good witty response.

Each race has its perks and different stories. The info is given in the creation stage. But in truth nothing super game changing.
#7 Posted by MonkeyMelon (217 posts) -
@The_Laughing_Man: @jadeskye:  Yeah i figured that they all are fun but, which weapons does each race specialize in, because I'm more of a bow and arrow, swords, and magic kinda guy. I figure Elves or Human probably.

Well they do not fully specialize in any of that. You pick a class. And you specialize in that. Mages cant use bows. And they are the only ones who can use spells.

Here is a wiki to help ya.

Sound like I will probably be an Elve with a bow and arrow, or Human with sword.@The_Laughing_Man: Can mages use swords?

Along with short swords

As for mage using as word. Why would you want to? Since your strength will be very low.

ELVES.

choose the violent voice and go two handed. if anyone makes fun of your height or your ears SMITE THEMMM!!!

#16 Posted by MonkeyMelon (217 posts) -
@The_Laughing_Man: Yeah i like that idea, the mage thing I wasn't to sure how that worked either, but yeah if your a mage no real need to be slicing and dicing I guess.

@TheHT: Yeah I wouldn't want to mess with that elf. haha

If you go elf. Just make sure to set your skin color one higher then what you see in the creation screen. Its got the Fallout 3/Oblivion sickness of looking VERY different in the creation screen.

White power!

err... wait.  That's not what you're asking about.

Yeah I know what you mean, I've played a lot of Oblivion in my time, and still am currently, trying to get my fix until I get Dragon Age. That's why I wasn't sure if mages could do much with a melee weapon. Do you get to do much with the side characters though.

You can pick their armor and stuff. Some of their skills.

At times you can play as them.

@Andorski: Jeeeez that's racist, we prefer cracka power.

Get it straight.LOL

@MonkeyMelon: lol yeah and i was a city elf too so poor bloke was a subpar 'citizen' who got his wedding crashed. oddly enough i was nice to everyone until we fought. but two handing gets really fun (especially with the new skills in awakening). just run up to a crowd of darkspawn and use 2-hand sweep and watch them fly.

only thing is at the beginning it can feel kinda clunky cause you swing so slow and miss quite a bit. just remember to focus your stats to be in line with your weapon of choice.

mages are pretty fun as well. run up to dudes and just spam cone of cold. you can do some other really fun stuff like making enemies into living bombs or turning them on themselves too. or, you know, turn into a swarm of bees.

there are some mage specializations that focus on using weapons and armor. aside from the equipment stuff you can define how your party acts when your not controlling them so you don't have to manage them or if you want to just switch to them and give them exact orders in combat. most of em have side quests and all of them have individual relationship bars with you. some you can shag others you can just kill before they join you.

@The_Laughing_Man:   That sounds cool, I hate when you can't customize a little bit of a side character.
So you don't control side characters all the time?
Or do you mean just at key moments?

During combat you can hop into their bodies and play as them.

@MonkeyMelon:  Not really no intris from what I saw.
#26 Posted by MonkeyMelon (217 posts) -
@The_Laughing_Man: Yeah that's what I thought, is using a bow fun though?

@TheHT: Yeah from the sounds of it I'll play through this one multiple times then. Is the combat hard to learn or just takes a little time to master.

if you not familiar with point and click rpgs it takes a bit of getting used to, not much though. by the time you've finished the origin story you should be used to the jive of things. being able to pause at any time of course gives you plenty of time to think things over.
#29 Posted by MonkeyMelon (217 posts) -
@The_Laughing_Man:  Cool, because I didn't want to only use bow and arrows all the time. I played a little bit of WOW, but couldn't really get into the combat aspect of it, this sounds much better.

You will have 4 party members. And you can jump between them and use their skills as you want. However Ive seen the AI do pretty well.
#31 Posted by MonkeyMelon (217 posts) -
@TheHT: That's awesome I was worried it would be hard, or just annoying to fight tons of enemies and not know what to do.

@The_Laughing_Man: That is also cool, because I thought that the AI would get old having to do everything for them.

The AI control is pretty nice. You can set what spell they can cast if they have two or more guys after them. Or what actions to do. Its pretty nice.

@The_Laughing_Man: Is there tons of side characters to get like 7 or 10 or just the same 5 every time you play through the game?

Its the same ones. Give or take the dog.

@The_Laughing_Man: That's good, I heard you can kill some of them, or one of them at least right?

No spoilers please.

I guess yeah.

Well if you buy it new I think you still get the strong prisoner. As for the other two.. I liked them. And for the awakening. I am being told its just as good as the first game. Cept for the issue with bringing over certain items from the DLC. Check out the quick look for awakening.

I started playing it a few days ago. It picks up close to after the main game ends. You can import the character you used in the main game or create a fresh one. New storyline, equipment, and companions (well almost completely new companions ;)).

The DLC as far as I know is mostly new equipment and places to go. There is a pretty tough ally to get in one too. I skipped them and just picked up Awakening though (Awakening is a full on expansion pack as opposed to the smaller individual DLC).
#44 Posted by MonkeyMelon (217 posts) -
@TheHT: Yeah I just heard of the Awakening DLC, but if it starts after the main story I'll end up picking it up.

So what race were you?

The only one I couldn't see liking is the Dwarfs race.
#45 Posted by TheHT (10781 posts) -
@MonkeyMelon: i was that two hander wielding city elf. lol vinny's drawf in the ql is pretty hilarious though.

choose whatever you like the most and if you're curious about the others you can experiment with your allies to try out some other stuff.
#46 Posted by MonkeyMelon (217 posts) -
@TheHT: Oh, yeah sorry. Yeah I think that I'll be a elf with a bow and short sword.

And I will most likely play through the entire game again as all the other races.

Now to get money.
#47 Posted by Azrail (404 posts) -

elf mage

most op class, with best racial benefits

#48 Posted by odintal (1095 posts) -
@MonkeyMelon:  the dwarf noble origin story is awesome.
even if you don't plan on playing through the entire game as a dwarf you should check that out.
#49 Posted by MonkeyMelon (217 posts) -
@odintal:  Yeah I'll play through as all the races, but just wanted to hear everyone opinions on which is better, or just more fun , or that would fit me more.

Which was your favorite race to play as?
#50 Posted by odintal (1095 posts) -

Honestly I've only played through 3 of them. Dwarf noble, city elf, and mage (the origin for human or elf mage is pretty much the same).  I want to finish playing through as all of them but my 360 went belly up around the start of the month.

Dwarf noble had the best story to it followed by city elf.
I enjoy my city elf the most but thats probably due to class choice (warrior/reaver) than race.
