Dragon Power is a localized NES port of the Famicom Japanese video game, Shen-Long no Nazo, which is a game based on the Dragon Ball cartoon and manga. While the game retains similar gameplay, it is known for its complete re-branding , and infamous censorship.
Story
If you want to call the slight overlying plot of Dragon Power a narrative, you might be a bit off.
The game follows the protagonist as he journeys to save Bulma from her captors, and to eventually find the legendary Dragon Balls, preventing them from landing in the hands of evil.
Localization Troubles
Since the game was based off of the Japanese only (at the time) hit "Dragon Ball" it didn't make much sense for Bandai to release the game as a Dragon Ball themed game in the United States.
This meant that most of the story, and even the main protagonist player controlled character were completely changed for US localization. This meant that instead of Goku, and his trademark black spiky hair, the player controlled a young boy with brown hair and a headband, similar to the one seen on the cover of the box and cartridge.
Besides Goku, most of the characterslike Master Roshi, Bulma, and even Oolong retain their respective likeness from the Dragon Ball cartoon and manga.
CENSORSHIP
- When Master Roshi gives Bulma the dragon ball after asking for a peek at her panties, panties float around his head in circles (Japanese version.) However, in the US version, these are flipped up side down and called...."sandwiches."
