Relevance of position of characters in battle formation?

Hey all, wondering if someone could help me with a combat mechanics question I had for this game.
I managed to get a copy, but only the cart, no manual.
I'm having a great time, but I'm not too clear about the importance of positioning characters in the slots numbered 1-4 in the battle formation tab in the "Misc." setting.
 
From what I hear, DQ IX allows you to place characters in the front and back rows, so I'm assuming that fighters go in the front and supports go in the back row in DQ IX.
 
How does this work with DQ IV's 1-4 slot system?
Are there any advantages / disadvantages to being the in front / back?
