I've played like 10 hours over the last three days, and I think it's pretty damn cool.

I think putting j-rock in the main menu was probably the worst thing. I also think that having the name monikers contain a ton of Capcom characters as options is the best thing. My dude can be known as Viewtiful Joe!

I felt that way for about 20 seconds, but you just have to embrace it! Love the awful, out-of-place, J-Rock!

Title screen music is amazing.

The rest of the game, unfortunately, is only fantastic for legitimate reasons.

I'm starting to feel like I'm the only one who enjoyed that song and was sad when they removed it from SSF4.

Is it hard for anyone else so far? There have been a few quests where I have been getting my ass kicked hard.

It can get quite difficult. Wander too far off the story path and the game is ready to remind you just what's up.

Yeah, I found this out when I checked out the sewers in the main town at only level 6. Managed to kill one of the monsters in there, only to lose two pawns and have to run out of there as quick as I could.

#16 Posted by JJOR64 (19065 posts) -

Been enjoying it so far. Not a big fan of when you fail quests, you can not go back and try to do them. There is just a big fat "Cancelled" in the top right corner when you check out your completed quests.

Yeah, it can be tough. Been trying to to have a least one Mage (which is my Main Pawn) and one Fighter Pawn with me plus an extra Mage or Strider with me to keep the party at 4 people.

@Cloudenvy: Then you should be ashamed! Nah, not really, i don't think i have ever listened to J-Rock, so i can't say if it's bad.
#18 Posted by RainbowKraken (23 posts) -

@Winsord: Yeah lol. I thought because it was in the starting town it would be okay to go for. The one I'm having trouble with now is the going to Witchwood.

That is kinda hard. Kill the dudes with the shields last they are strongest. Once you get to Witchwood its real easy.

The song is done by B'z who are one of Japan's most seminal and successful rock bands. Wikipedia says they were the first Asian band to be initiated into the Hollywood's Rock Walk. I don't know if any of that means if it's good or bad J-Rock, but there you have it.

Personally I think its awesome, I really dig the pawn system. Most of them are decked out in well put together gear and you can tell when somebody really cared to not just make a half naked female. Aside from the chatter I think its very well done.

Can't wait till i fight some of the more unique enemies.

Oh and that troll in the area under Gran Soren is a jerk.

I had trouble with that at first too. The trick is to get them in water and then zap them/ice them. Also, cut off their tails.

I have it on my phone and still listen to it when I play SSF4, was really bummed when they took it out for the awful menu music. Love that song even if it makes me a bad person.

Maybe it's because I didn't play a whole lot of Monster Hunter but a lot of this game is weird. And impenetrable at first. They just tell you a whole bunch of stuff about how the systems work without telling you why you should do it. Almost Demon's Souls in terms of how many systems it throws at you immediately and expects you to know as soon as the window pops up.

Like "go climb up that monster!". Will I do more damage when I'm climbing? Will I take less damage or more? There's all the loot on the ground, tree branches and berries and flasks of oil.. Why do I want them? I can throw oil at an enemy... is that more effective than just cutting them with my sword?

It just seems like where other developers spend time cleaning up the UI and considering player experience, Capcom spent time increasing the complexity and creating suboptimal options.

I find that level 10 is the sweet spot for this game. Once you hit that, it opens up to a point where you can really start exploring without having to constantly worry about getting ganked.

And you want to collect EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING. And honestly, you can carry so much, there's no reason to not collect everything.

This game allowed me to climb onto the roof of some dudes house in a fishing village, jump on top of his chimney, and dig around inside it finding a bag of 4.5 thousand gold.

2012 GOTY.

Seriously not being sarcastic, love the game so far it is awesome.

Oh dude, explore the hell out of Cassardis and the surrounding areas it is worth it. By the time I got around to escorting Mercedes I was already level 12 and had like 45k gold.

it's not out in the UK until friday, so that might have something to do with the lack of board activity?

#34 Edited by Marz (5671 posts) -

about level 17, spent about 10 hours in the game. This game has handed me my ass a few times, there are just some monsters in the early game that are near impossible to kill with your current gear that you have to run away and the game doesn't make it clear that you have to run away other than your pawns saying the thing is too powerful. Other than that, i'm having fun with it.

I'm gonna try and pick this up after the next few paychecks and/or if it goes on sale for the right price. Is there any significant difference between the PS3 and 360 versions that I should be aware of?

They might have lost a sale because of this. I regretted buying Street Fighter IV for the awful, awful menu music.

@L1GHTN1N: I hated that song so much when SF4 came out. Then they took it out for Super SF4, and now I miss hearing it.

#40 Posted by TheHBK (5561 posts) -

Animation over gameplay. Fuck, I hate that Japanese companies still do this. At least Dark Souls didn't.

#41 Posted by Brodehouse (10125 posts) -
@TheHBK Didn't it? I only played Demon's Souls but that game was lets say 'deliberate' in how you had to get all the way through an animation before you could move.

Real problem with the animations is as far as I can tell there's no lockon. So I'm slashing and cutting at wind as a dude walks beside me.
#42 Posted by Marcsman (3285 posts) -

Tried it at a friends house. Skyrim>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Dragon's Dogma. It's not even close.

#43 Posted by TheHBK (5561 posts) -

@Brodehouse: It did, but it was not as bad as this or what you see in Monster Hunter where you have to complete a combo. It doesn't make sense to cancel out of a swing already on the way but to not be able to cancel out of a wind up or when you pressed a bunch of buttons but want to cancel even though the animation for a particular move hasn't started.

You can tell your main pawn to not talk as much. Just go to an inn and sit in the knowledge chair, I think it's called that at least.

#45 Posted by Turambar (6886 posts) -
@TheHBK: It sounds like the key to success here, as with Dark Souls, is to not mash buttons and be mindful of all wind up times.
#46 Posted by RedRavN (414 posts) -

I think I would really enjoy this game if it came out for PC. I know capcom is making DMC5 for PC. I hope they make a port someday but at least I can play dark souls eventually.

The combat is superb, as is the whole Pawn integration system. Unfortunately, the world really is a dull and generic as Patrick said... I too mostly just skip through a lot of the dialogue. Plus I really dislike the random difficulty spikes that come out of nowhere. First group of bandits? piss easy! The secon-Oh, I'm already dead. Not being able to order your Pawns so they'll do the spells/abilities you want them to looks like a massive misstep in hindsight on CAPCOM's part surely?... It's crazy how they 'evolved' Resident Evil into cooperative focussed gameplay, yet something like Dragon's Dogma that's essentially all about partying it up and laying waste to fantastical fools didn't receive any form of cooperative gameplay.

I'm whining a bit here, but I'm overall really enjoying my time with it. I'm not exactly disappointed either; the gameplay, the pawns and the customisation were what drew me in to begin with, and as I said, I think the combat's great. Even the overall flow of the movement and physics is really fun, like jumping across rooftops or throwing your pawns off a hill side. A lot of goofy mischief to be had. The Pawns dialogue can be pretty funny as well because of how dreadful it is. It almost reminds me of the hilarious ad-libs that would spew out of the characters in the Outbreak games. Menus can be a tad cumbersome to navigate, though, there's that, too.

Oh, but of course, the boss battles... If there has to be one thing specifically that would nudge me on, it's the excitement of seeing what other sort of massive set-piece boss battles they have.

Also the main menu music is fabulous.
