    Overview

Dragoon regiments were established in most European armies during the late 17th and 18th centuries. In the beginning they were horse-riding ranged infantry, but during the 18 century, dragoons evolved into conventional light cavalry units.

The word dragoon comes from the firearm that dragoons carried, the dragon, which is a shorter, handgun version of the blunderbuss.
