So we all forgot a certain something turned 11 recently?

#1 Posted by Lunar_Aura (2779 posts) -

Hint: It played these awesome looking games:

Old ass games that can probably now run on your fancy telephone! Did you give your old Dreamcast some love recently for it's 11th birthday?

I did.  Then I cleaned it.

September turned 11 today. Never forget.

#10 Posted by Hailinel (23904 posts) -

Man, Leon.  I keep forgetting that guy is even a DOA character.  I mean seriously, who cares about that guy?  Who actually plays as him when not trying to just unlock his ending/earn an achievement?

Also, happy birthday, Dreamcast!

Wait, why is everybody saying that today is the Dreamcast's birthday? What happened to 9/9/99?

I don't understand the cause of the recent surge of nostalgia for the Dreamcast. Anyone who played the system when it came out knew it for what it was: a flop. A handful of great titles, some PS1 ports with better graphics, and online play that came too early and without a killer app. If it wasn't for Soul Calibur my DC would have left my possession long ago.

I don't think they are, I mean the thread says recently after all. I was a bit confused for a second too.

Technically the Dreamcast is almost 12 years old though, it came out in November over in Japan!

Edit: Perfect time to fire up some Shenmue on mine.

@Ygg:

True, but since 11/27/98 isn't as cool as 9/9/99, it doesn't count :P.

I've tried playing Dreamcast games, but I need a more powerful computer.

It flopped because of Sega's mismanagement, PS2 hype, lack of a DVD drive, no EA and Squaresoft support. The software library was excellent if you had a specific taste. Online play's killer app was Phantasy Star Online, btw.

Man, the Dreamcast...I fixed mine ages ago, still have it hooked up and everything. Lots of love for Chu Chu Rocket and Shenmue.

When you go to the Hallmark store to find a card under "Game Console birthday", make sure it's also under the "Late birthday" category.

You know about the Dreamcast 10-year anniversary Quick Looks they did last year, right?

They're on pg. 11 of the QL's, if you're interested.

I bought a Dreamcast recently but I'm having a really hard time finding any games that aren't rediculosuly expensive. Typing of the Dead is going for £58 on Amazon, and that's what, $90? I just want to play some games on it.

since Sega is out of the console business, I don't think anyone will get too bent out of shape if you, um, make some "backups" of Dreamcast games.

Piracy is bad though, mkay.

Just sayin'.
#35 Posted by AlisterCat (5482 posts) -
@slowbird:  I wouldn't have any moral objections myself, but I wouldn't know where to begin, good sir. I also like owning games for myself, but it doesn't seem to be working out with the dreamcast.
#36 Posted by slowbird (1634 posts) -
@AlisterCat:  Yeah, I understand.  I like having the real games, too.  90 bucks for a 10 year old game is steep though.  You could get a rare Hello Kitty Dreamcast for not much more than that. XD

It seems like you can find a bunch of Dreamcast games on that site that is a bay of sorts for people with eyepatches and peg legs.  I got lucky and had some games come with the Dreamcast I bought.  Then I just bought some selected others.  Racing games seem to be fairly cheap.

SoulCalibur still looks better than most Wii games.

Happy birthday dreamcast I never knew ye but I heard you were fun, it's kind of sad I know a lot about games\consoles from the 80s and early 90s but I don't know anything about newer consoles like dreamcast ps1 xbox N64 etc. I was behind the times I played NES since 2000 :D cause Romania was behind the times and nowhere to buy new consoles from heck I never knew any other consoles existed until I got internet in 2006 :D. Yes I got internet in 2006 isn't that crazy?

#39 Posted by Stealthoneill (249 posts) -

Damn you OP! I've been avoiding the thought of my Dreamcast as I've wanted to drag my attic out and set up 'the old girl!' And now I may have just found the excuse! And yeah, the Dreamcast wasn't the greatest console but I still remember a lot of fun times with Chu Chu four player!

#40 Posted by AlisterCat (5482 posts) -
@slowbird:  Surely it would need some kind of boot disc though. We shouldn't discuss things that I wouldn't partake in, not on this respectable forum.
I did get Wacky Races with my Dreamcast... but it's not very good. It's kind of like Cel Damage for the Gamecube. Even looks about the same. I want some Sonic Adventure and Jet Set Radio! and Shenmue (shenmue is probbably the most expensive of them all from what I've seen).

@AlisterCat:  Yes, I don't know anything about burning Dreamcast stuff and don't want to get this locked.

I do know that the best racing game on the Dreamcast is GT2.  Because I have a Bleem! disc to run GT2 on my Dreamcast. :D

Oh believe me, I do.
#44 Posted by AlisterCat (5482 posts) -
@slowbird:  Ha. I didn't know anything like Bleem existed. I just looked it up, thats crazy. I might be interested, if not for the fact that I already have 2 original PS1s and 2 original PS2s that can play PS1 games. Would be kind of redundant but a cool experiment.
#45 Posted by slowbird (1634 posts) -
@AlisterCat:  Yeah, it's really limited, there's only about 3 games that work, and you need a special disc for each one.  Plus a separate VMU that Bleem can use to emulate a PS1 memory card.  I did it just to be nerdy.
#46 Posted by MonkeyProfessor (3 posts) -

I walked around in Shenmue a bit, had a coffee from a Bell Wood vending machine, pet the cat, beat up some thugs, and checked on my girl Nozomi.  Good times.

#47 Posted by Mrskidders (1330 posts) -
@RobotHamster: I think it might just because im wildly hungover but I read your comment like your cat avatar was saying it to me and thats exactly how I picture him talking.  I need to lay off the booze I think.
