    Dreamcast

    Platform »

The Dreamcast is the fifth and final console developed by Sega and the first of the sixth-generation of consoles to release. As the first 128-bit system, it was the first to offer truly arcade-quality 3D graphics. It is famous for being the first console to include worldwide online capability, its game library, and its unexpectedly short life span.

Been meaning to post about this one for a while now. Some of you may remember all of that game footage that was floating around out there of that Wii emulator that was running games in HD resolutions. I may be a little bit late to the party, but there's a Dreamcast emulator that can do the same thing - except it has a nifty feature that can actually display Dreamcast games in wide screen, even if they did not support it originally.

If for some reason the video gets cut off, hit up this link to watch it at Youtube.

To be honest, I made this video because I want to scare up support for the emulator. For some bizarre reason, it doesn't support gamepads at all; the best you can do is run something like Xpadder (which translates pushing a button on a gamepad into a keyboard key press), but that completely eliminates the ability to use analog sticks. Obviously, this becomes a huge problem, because a good 80-90% of the Dreamcast library is played using an analog stick. I was hoping that, somehow, this video would get some people to light a fire under somebody's ass to get it done. Though NullDC supports quite a large number of games, most of them are very difficult to play because there's no analog stick support. A few of them, like Jet Set Radio (can't tag anything) and the original Sonic Adventure (get stuck in the sewers), are outright unplayable because of the lack of analog.

So hit up their forums and pester somebody about it. Link your friends to my video. Spread the word! A really good Dreamcast emulator is almost in our grasp; we just need to show our support so they're motivated to work on it again.

It looks crisp, I think it would look better in 4:3 720p though. I play games in VGA whenever possible and that can look very close. I've still got my Japanese Anniversary copy:

I'm also considering doing other videos of some other Dreamcast games running in Widescreen HD, though considering the weird way I had to record Sonic Adventure 2, I make no guarantees...

I remember being wowed by the game when it came out. I have never seen a console do graphics like that before, and I already knew the Dreamcast's superior capabilities.

I think the act of giving links or instructions on how to use emulators aren't allowed. I don't see the problem of just mentioning it so long as you don't tell people how.

There's a link in his thead which takes you to the website where you can download emulators for several systems including PS1, PS2, PSP, N64, GameCube, DS, GBA, XBOX and Dreamcast as well as get support and info on how to use them.

    Wait, what?

Jeeze, if that's the case, I completely forgot about it. Most places I visit, even high-profile forums, allow discussion of emulation as long as it nothing illegal is discussed. Emulation itself is not illegal, and everywhere I linked basically forbids discussion of illegal content.

So when we talk about Virtual Console (Which is essentially old games emulated), we're killing a dog.

Anyway, makes me wish Dreamcast games were actually widescreen...there are some, even then, they dont fit the screen...
