The Atomic Edition
In November 1996, the version of Duke Nukem 3D was v1.3d. 3D Realms created a new version of the game, which updated the game to v1.4. The game was given the subtitle "The Atomic Edition". In order for customers who already owned the original v1.3d CD, a purchasable patch was created. That patch was called "The Plutonium Pak".
The patch fixed several bugs and added the 4th episode "The Birth" containing 11 new levels, 1 new weapon and 3 new enemies. Once the original game has been upgraded by the Plutonium Pak, the game is now called The Atomic Edition.
Game Engine
Main article: Build Engine.
Almost as important as the game itself was Duke Nukem 3D's use of Ken Silverman's Build engine, an advanced piece of development technology which allowed for some of the most complex, detailed and intricate environments ever seen at the time. Build technology allowed for rooms to be built directly above other rooms, sloping surfaces, moving geometry and even for complex special effects that could be triggered by player interaction, causing buildings to collapse, walls to come apart and basically anything else the level designers wanted to happen within the limits of the engine's abilities. Compared to other games of the era like Doom or Star Wars: Dark Forces, this technology was attractive and very impressive to players and developers alike.
The Xbox Live Arcade Release
In August 2008 it was announced on 3D Realms' website that Duke Nukem 3D would be arriving on the Xbox Live Arcade in September, with online multiplayer and a time rewind function (similar to Prince of Persia). The game was released on September 24th at a cost of 800 Microsoft points ($10USD). The Plutonium Pak expansion is included in this version, which means that the title "Duke Nukem 3D" on the Xbox Live Marketplace is a bit misleading, since it's actually Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition.
In addition to the time rewinding function, the XBLA release also features 720p graphics support (with an optional, configurable screen smoothing filter), cooperative and dukematch gameplay, 200 potential achievement points and a modernized rendering engine that eliminates distortion when looking up and down.
New Enemies
For information on the original enemies, see Duke Nukem 3D.
A Pig Cop driving a single-seater tank-ish vehicle. They can deal a lot of damage if the player isn't aware of them. Their weakness is their slow turning, so the player can circle strafe them to defeat them easily. To save ammo, more daring players can rush up behind them and press the large radiation symbol on the back of the tank, which causes the vehicle to self-destruct. Sometimes the Pig Cop driver will survive and continue attacking Duke.
The toughest non-boss enemy you'll encounter in the entire game. These creatures can take quite a pounding, run very fast and deal tons of damage. Slashing Duke with their razor-sharp claws is their preferred combat style, but they're also able to shoot shrink rays and squish you. At least one puzzle in The Birth requires Duke to keep a Protector Drone alive long enough for it to shrink him so he can escape through a small hole in the wall.
The final boss for the 4th episode, and the mother of the new Protector Drone strain of aliens. She's fought underwater, giving the battle a time limit, and like the other bosses, she's has a massive amount of health. Her primary attack is to emit electricity from her body, which does not harm her or her children, but will electrocute Duke since he's submerged in water. Throughout the fight she will very, very frequently stop to (quite graphically) give birth to Protector Drones, making this the hardest encounter in the game. After she dies, to add insult to injury, Duke shoves a pipe bomb into her vagina and blows her body to bloody chunks. No, really.
Level 2: Duke-Burger

Weapons
For information on the original weapons, see Duke Nukem 3D.Microwave Expander
The new Microwave Expander weapon looks a lot like the Shrinker from the original game, but instead of a green glowing crystal it's equipped with a red crystal and a small satellite. Compared to the Shrinker from the original game, the expander does the exact opposite: expands enemies untill their bodies burst. The burst even deals damage to nearby enemies, making the Expander one of the coolest and funniest weapons in the Duke Nukem arsenal.Episodes & Levels
