Duke Nukem 3D
Duke Nukem 3D is a video game that consists of 4 releases365 Games To Play Before You Die
I seem to be increasing the time between each blog but it's only because I've been quite busy lately. I've got 11, yes eleven, games to catch up on so I think I'll just post the games and only give my thoughts on the ones that I really like. Today it's threequels (or a sequel to a sequel).
Previous 5 Games
- #47: Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes
- #48: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords
- #49: Call of Duty 2
- #50: Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne
- #51: Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Full List

#52: X-Men Legends 2: Rise of Apocalypse
Platform(s): PC, Xbox, PS2, GameCube and PSPRelease: 2005
Developer(s): Raven Software and Vicarious Visions
Best Quote: Deadpool: 'EVERYBODY! Shield me with your bodies!'

I should have put this in my last blog with the other sequels but I forgot. I was happily reminded of the game while watching the Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 QL so I thought I'd just include it here.

#53: Grand Theft Auto III
Platform(s): PS2, Xbox and PCRelease: 2001
Developer(s): Rockstar North
Best Quote: Anything on Chatterbox FM

The game that popularised the phrase 'open world'. GTA III was bigger then almost all other games I'd played and it was in 3D and it looked good. It's a shame that so many games feel like they have to copy it just for the sake of a bullet point on the back of the box.

#54: Civilistation III
Platfrom(s): PCRelease: 2001
Developer(s): Firaxis Games
Best Quote: None

Sid Meier knows how to make a good strategy game.

#55: Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
Platform(s): PS1, PC, GameCube, Dreamcast and PSNRelease: 1999
Developer(s): Capcom

#56: The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Platform(s): PCRelase: 2002
Developer(s): Bethesda
Best Quote: 'I think you're a thief! Cause you've stolen my heart.'
GB Wiki Page
I like big and open RPGs. Morrowind is one of them.

#57: Duke Nukem 3D
Platform(s): PC, Saturn, PS1, N64 and XBLARelase: 1996
Developer(s): 3D Realms
Best Quote: 'Your face. Your ass. What's the difference?'

The third game in the franchise brought Duke into the third dimension and with it all the alien killing action of it's predecessors. It kind of makes me sad that we'll never get to see DNF but I guess games have moved on and Duke hasn't.

#58: Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec
Platform(s): PS2Release: 2001
Developer(s): Polyphony Digital
Best Quote: None

I usually hate racing sims but GT3 was able to keep me playing. Maybe it's just because everyone else was playing it that I gave it shot and it was actually more fun then I'd expected.

#59: Hitman: Contracts
Platform(s): PC, PS2 and XboxRelease: 2004
Developer(s): IO Interactive
Best Quote: 'Inspector, you've obviously learned too much about me. I can't have that. Even in my death.'
GB Wiki Page
I've always loved the Hitman franchise. There's just something really satisfying about committing the perfect assassination and not alerting anybody. Also if you get caught it's just as fun to blast your way through (although it's probably harder).

#60: Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos
Platform(s): PCRelease: 2002
Developer(s): Blizzard
Best Quote: 'Guns don't kill people, I do! Haha!'
GB Wiki Page
Remember when Warcraft was most famous for being a strategy game? Ahh, those were the days.

#61: Thief: Deadly Shadows
Platform(s): PC and XboxRelease: 2003
Developer(s): Ion Storm
Best Quote: 'Giant rats. Great...'

#62: Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
Platform(s): Xbox, PC, GameCube and PS2Release: 2005
Developer(s): Ubisoft Montreal
Best Quote: Anna: The Maria Narcissa.
Sam Fisher: Sounds like your setting me up for another blind date.
Anna: The Maria Narcissa is a boat.
Sam: So was the last girl you set me up with.
Anna: Fisher!
Sam: Sorry.

A lot of stealth games seem to have really good threequels and Splinter Cell in no exception. Chaos Theory is the best game in the series for me and really refined the mechanics of the previous and had great levels too.
62 down 303 to go.

Kurbzz shows up for a record breaking 2 shows in a row! We had an episode jam packed full of news such as, the next terrible Resident Evil movie got confirmed, Activision thinking about a Tony Hawk skateboard Silversurfer and Hobgoblin and more. Uncharted got the movie threatment last week and now it's the classic 1979 game Asteroids! In the second hour we did the top 10 worst named games, did reviews for the Mayflash fight stick and Doom Resurrection on the iPhone. Finally we took some callers to round out a fine show.

For better or for worse, love them or hate them Achievements/Trophies/etc are here to stay, and they have a large and dedicated following, and are always a hot topic of debate on the GiantBomb forums and elsewhere.
Personally, i'm a huge fan of them and I feel they've helped me to try games I would have otherwise avoided, and have helped me get hundreds of hours extra playtime out of games I would have normaly played until the credits rolled and simply shelved forever. So I owe them a lot of thanks, some of them at least, not all of them are well thought out...
Cabela's Alaskan Adventures
This is going to seem like a rather odd choice, given how poorly recieved the game itself was (Trust me on this one, it's truly awful) I bought it because I was curious about the series and wondered if it was at least playable. How wrong I was. However, that is testemant to it's achievement structure (full list here)
While the achievements may seem fairly standard, each section of the game (on each difficulty) as well as awards for hunting each animal and hunting 10 animals with each weapon. As well as one odd achievement for bagging 3 different Trophy Legend bears. They are actually more cleverly designed than it might seem at first, each achievement you get brings you one step closer to another one on the list. For example, by the time you've hunted a couple of animals, you've already gained something like 15 points, and ordinarily by this point i'd be thinking "Wow, this game sucks balls, i'll play something else now" instead, what I was thinking was "Hmmm, 7 more animals and i've got the rifle achievement"
My train of thought continued along this path and before I knew it, I was struggling to get the very last achievement, and oddly enough despite the game being truly awful, I had a lot of fun because the achievements were laid out in a fashion that while I had to work hard to get them, were flowing at an even enough pace as to hold my interest with an iron grip. Sadly I could not get the last achievement, the duck hunt style sections of the game are just too unplayable for me to get the gold medal on the last one. So I ended up calling it a game after something like 10 hours of gameplay and 970 points. Something I would never have given the game ordinarily.
8/10
Clive Barker's Jericho
Despite a huge array of flaws, I rather enjoyed the game itself. It's achievements on the other hand, were almost nonexistant. Full list here, as you can see it's almost impossible to miss any of those achievements, especially if you are aiming to get them. Even if you played through the game oblivious to them you would still come out the other end with something like 900 points at least. None of them are worthy of being called an 'achievement' really.
The game itself is not particularly difficult, and the achievement list shows very little imagination, it appears as if the developers almost begrudged putting them in and so went to as little effort as possible. You have standard achievements for finishing each chapter, and the game, and achievements for using each characters special abilities and for killing a certain amount of enemies in different ways. As well as this, there are achievements for finishing each chapter on hard without becoming incapacitated (which is much much easier than it sounds) so, by playing the game on hard, and making proper use of saves, you can get something like 70 points per chapter, ontop of this the game is quite short, even with the extra effort required for a couple of the achievements it takes no more than a half hour or so ontop of the regular amount of time it takes to play through the game. A thoroughly dissapointing list in my opinion.
2/10
Bionic Commando: Rearmed
For an XBLA game, Bionic Commando: Rearmed manages to include a large amount of variety with it's achievements, while you have the standard achievements for clearing the game on the hardest difficulty, finding hidden objects, and performing a certain action a large number of times (in this case quite a difficult one, blocking projectiles with your claw) you also have a number of level specific achievements varying greatly in difficulty and objective, such as clearing a stage quickly, or clearing a stage without touching some of the goo found on that stage.
Overall, the only problem with this list, is that they flow quite slowly and sporadically, and you must put a lot of effort in to see some of them, but then isn't that the point?
9/10
Duke Nukem 3D
While Duke Nukem 3D's achievements aren't particularly a departure from the norm for the most part (100, 250 and 500 multiplayer kills, finish each chapter) they do offer a degree of flexibility that you don't always see. For example, the chapter specific achievements can be played on any difficulty or even co-op, and it uses the remainder of it's achievement allocation for a bit of a laugh. While these achievements don't even try to be difficult (Tip and exotic dancer, step in a pile of excrement) they are certainly very Duke-like and deserve a chuckle.
Overall though, the game itself can be quite difficult, so even some of the generic achievements become a tough challenge even on normal difficulty settings, so overall i'd say it's a pretty good list, a nice balance of funny and challenging.
7/10
Well that's all for this time folks, i'll leave you with a story. As some of you know, I recently played through Afro Samurai, and while the game itself isn't particularly great, and it's achievements are pretty brutal in their difficulty (I left the game with about 300 as I had no more time with it, and lacked the patience to attempt hard mode) I am truly grateful for having played it simply for this one segment, what I consider to be one of the most epic boss fights ever envisioned.
Edit: Wow wtf happened to the font?! O_o

Here's My answer for this week's QotW:
"How do you feel now that Duke is dead?"

With 3D Realms having shuttered its doors, there's still the possibility that Duke Nukem Forever could be sold to another developer to bring its long and extensive development cycle to an end. With that in mind, I have to wonder. If the game never comes out, would people actually miss it?
Duke Nukem 3D was an excellent game with a goofy sense of style (though it was a style that cribbed heavily from films like They Live and Army of Darkness). That really can't be denied. But, well, the game came out well over a decade ago. I was still in high school when 3D Realms began work on DNF, and now I'm working forty hours a week with a salary. Just as an individual's tastes can change as they mature, so has the landscape of the game industry. In 1997, Duke was an absurd take on masculinity, with big muscles, big guns, and hot girls with big...well, you get the idea.
The problem here is that so many games have come and gone with characters and themes that have not only emphasized at least what some parts of what Duke Nukem games were about, but that have taken them to their utmost extreme. Duke Nukem Forever was in development for so long that other characters have come along and out-Duked him, seemingly making him the punchline to his own joke. The Gears of War series stars over-muscled meatheads with biceps larger than their skulls killing hordes of aliens. Kratos is for all intents and purposes, a more serious, perpetually pissed off take on Duke, reveling in bloody carnage while taking time for the occasional threesome minigame. Team Ninja's Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden titles have pretty much taken the concept of overly sexualized women about as far as one can reasonably go without earning an AO rating. Formerly plotless (or relatively plotless) blargh-kill-kill-kill FPS series like Quake, Wolfenstein and Doom have all seen sequels that have at least tried to put more effort into narratives that require more than a single brain cell to understand. Then there's Valve and all that they've accomplished in the FPS genre while 3D Realms kept running back to the drawing board.
So what does Duke have left that separates him from the pack? A blond flattop and one-liners stolen from popular B-movies. Not exactly what one could call a powerful arsenal in this day and age.
Everything that Duke represented has been done better by others in the years since. So again, if Duke Nukem Forever never comes out, would anyone actually miss it? If it ever does come out, who would care for it, aside from those that would buy it simply to be in on the long-running joke?

Time for some old school FPS news.
R.I.P 3D Realms
What is this I´m reading?! 3D Realms has shut down?! one of the greatest studios of my childhood. An awesome developer with so many great titles under its belt. Its really sad to see them slowly go down like they´ve been doing lately. 3D Realms REALLY knew their shooters and they had so much old school buzz surrounding the studio. I dont´really know what to say other than read more about it here and weep. I was actually really hoping for Duke Nukem Forever this year aswell.. Turns out those hopes was thrown in my face instead and Duke Nukem Forever will forever be mocked.
Congratulations Wolfenstein 3D
In brighter news, Wolf 3D turned 17 on May 5th. Congratulations to the game and to ID Software for creating the genre. Go read more about that here !
This news was brought to you straight for Romeros twitter. Everyone should follow him. His twitter is "theromero".

20. Parasite Eve
Sony Playstation, 1998
Score one for Square actually making a different kind of RPG. The setting and story of Parasite Eve were actually pretty interesting, but it's definitely smokin' hot Aya Brea and the battle system that make it a worthy #20 (mostly the Aya).
19. Duke Nukem 3D
PC, 1996
I didn't end up playing this gem until it was ported to the PS1, in the form of "Total Meltdown." For the most part, it was a pretty solid version, complete with stipper nipples, one-liners, and a new scenario plug'n'prey. But fuck that version, when I played 3D shortly afterward with netcode I was blown away. Also want to give a big F you to the N64 version while I'm at it, since it was super-censored and nothing like Duke Nukem.
18. Chrono Cross
Sony Playstation, 2000
This game is particularly moving, and I've still never beaten it. Something about the concept of this parallel world where you no longer exist, and how upside-down different everything is. Very sad tones and a great musical score cement this game on my list. That and the super twist middle and ending! But I can't really talk about that.
17. Unreal Tournament
PC, 1999
My introduction to multiplayer deathmatch was about as good as it could be. The original Unreal Tournament had the perfect speed, weapons, map design and badditude (MONSTER KILL!) that still makes it the best in the series and one of the best MP Shooters of all time. In later installments they would go on to ruin the trajectory of the all-mighty flak cannon.
16. Resident Evil 2
Sony Playstation, 1998
RE1 was the first PS1 game I ever played/owned, but it was bested by its all-too-better sequel featuring Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield. All of the locations in this game are great, the viral story is just a hell of a lot better (William Burkin's many transformations come to mind), not to mention Mr. X. The alternate scenario featured this trench coat-clad man that pre-dated Nemesis and provided more scares than RE3.
Stay tuned in the near future (probably not tomorrow) for # 15-11!

I have way to many new games. I never thought I say this but it's too much.
Wii: No More Heroes, The House of The Dead: Overkill, Zelda: Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy.
DS: Nintendogs(lol), Sim City Creator (slow saving) and Spac3 Invaders Extr3me.
PC: Sins of the solar empire, Crysis (had to get it to test the new pc)
Gameboy Advance: Many games that I got from my boss including Duke Nukem, some sort of Mission Impossible game and Ogre Tactics.
And of course, I work everyday so I barely got time to play anything..
I think I need to make a gaming schedual (spelling?)
It's a hard life :)
