Duke Nukem Forever Delayed To June

Even the best-laid plans can slip by a month or two. Duke Nukem Forever has been pushed back to a later June 14 release in North America and a June 10 release (a whopping four days earlier) elsewhere. It was supposed to hit worldwide shelves in early May, but something, obviously, got in the way of that.

What’s forcing Gearbox Software and publisher 2K’s hand in this postponement is unknown, but the reason must have been significant. Upon picking up Duke Nukem Forever, Gearbox was firm about not discussing possible release dates or launch windows for the shooter. Delays, much like engine swaps, are a legacy issue for DNF. Gearbox just wanted to make absolutely sure that whatever date was set, was the date the game would hit without a shadow of a doubt. Whoops!

At least the Texas-based developer has the right kind of attitude about all of this. In the following video, Randy Pitchford pokes some fun at himself and DNF about this delay.

Duke Nukem Forever was scheduled to hit in the mid-‘90s. A couple of engine swaps, a studio closure, and more than a decade later, Borderlands developer Gearbox stepped in to piece together the game and get it out of the door. It was revealed in a playable form to the public for the first time at PAX Prime.

#6 Posted by Seedofpower (3909 posts) -

Nice. Try to get one last delay in for old times sake.

#7 Posted by Pop (2530 posts) -

2020 - confirmed date.

also: there is absolutely no way this game is going to be worth all of these delays.

What!? I am so surprised!

#13 Posted by Meltbrain (2966 posts) -

Fucking hell. It feels like an April fools joke at this point. Eff you, DNF!

#14 Posted by TheYear20XX (425 posts) -

I'm willing to bet part of their contract for working on this game stipulates at least one delay.

#15 Posted by Meyers09 (21 posts) -

So, business as usual?

#16 Posted by CookieMonster (2408 posts) -

And so it begins...

again.

Perfect publicity stunt

This just made my day, it just shows that no matter how much chaos is going around in the world.. somethings just stay the same

#19 Posted by Jeffk38uk (710 posts) -

Insert "delaying game to change engines" joke here. Kidding aside, if it means some more final tweaks before it finally comes out, then yay for gearbox really.

This is either one of two things:

1. A delay for the sake of delaying it, because that's what we know this game for.

2. An April Fool's joke, despite Gearbox denying it. I mean, who puts this much effort into announcing a delay? And the fact that they go over the top with announcing it. (Then again, this is DNF after all.)

This almost makes me wanna hear Brad Nicholson lose it at Anthony Burch... almost.

Saw this news article coming? I did!
Saw it coming a day ago when I read this stuff on another site. What I didn't see coming is the people who actually care. Then again I don't really know those types of people because it's the same people who giggle like little girls when the word "Cock" is mentioned.

#22 Posted by buhssuht (436 posts) -

at this point, its a tradition to delay this game. it aint DNF without delaying it once

HAHA
#24 Posted by Hot_Karl (3309 posts) -

I laughed at this announcement. Even if this was just in an ironic, joking way, I agree with the delay.

Either way, still buying this first day of release.

#25 Posted by Sauson (560 posts) -

Surely I'm not the only one who thinks they always had this planned out. A Duke Nukem Forever delay joke - they never get old!

#26 Posted by TadThuggish (882 posts) -

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA

Fuck that dumb game.

#27 Posted by Kidavenger (3380 posts) -

I'll bet this was supposed to be an April fools joke that somebody screwed up on and posted early.

The video was fairly silly and the revised release dates don't make much sense.

"No no! We can make this game awesome, We just need another month!"

#29 Posted by Pibo47 (3166 posts) -

I do not believe that DNF is a game, not until i can play through the entire game. Only then will i believe.

#30 Posted by Spiritof (1987 posts) -

DNF is coming out on April 1st.

I'm calling it.

#31 Posted by jozzy (2041 posts) -

"The duke never comes early" - I approve

#32 Posted by Krakn3Dfx (2480 posts) -

Wonder if L.A. Noire and Brink coming out around the same time have any bearing on this.  June seems to be a quieter month, maybe they feel like they'll get better exposure then.

#33 Posted by avantegardener (1090 posts) -

I suspect this to be PR bullshit, tip of the hat to you marketing, you win again.

#34 Posted by Impossibilium (679 posts) -

Excellent announcement.

Makes me want to buy it more just for the laugh.

It has to get released first.

...so what?

#37 Posted by choffy21 (1376 posts) -

Gut feeling, this is simply a publicity stunt. But maybe it's gonna be this song-and-dance again...

#38 Posted by FlipperDesert (2069 posts) -

I was hoping they would delay it for one day, that would be much funnier.

#39 Posted by 234r2we232 (3181 posts) -

Woo. 4 days earlier :)

#40 Posted by Zeemod (303 posts) -

I find this ironically amusing.

#41 Posted by The_Laughing_Man (13629 posts) -

So when does the free version come for the people who got the Borderlands GOTY?

#42 Posted by Zamir (506 posts) -

it begins, i hope that Duke Nukem Forever becomes a game that brings down developers who think they can finish and ship the game but they can't the game's code is cursed, and george broussard is always warning other's about the cursed code and george can't die until the game is finished, that would be really funny, but maybe the game is coming out on april 1st instead and this just smoke and mirrors for that

#43 Posted by benu302000 (208 posts) -

You guys don't get it. This is all part of the Duke Nukem Forever ARG we've been playing for the last decade. This is the same thing as a WoW content drop.

#44 Posted by ryanwho (12082 posts) -

I can't be the only one who thinks it was always intended to come out in June and this was just part of the plan? No? Then yall are stupid. This was part of the plan.

#47 Posted by SSully (4059 posts) -

Shit we have been waiting for YEARS now, a month wont make a difference, right? RIGHT?!?

#48 Posted by FreakAche (2938 posts) -

Was this supposed to be a parody of that Final Fantasy XIII release date announcement?

#49 Posted by MormonWarrior (2485 posts) -

Well, it was nice knowing you Gearbox. Sorry you'll also have to go under because of DNF.

#50 Posted by JackSukeru (5816 posts) -

Funny.

I do hope that, that is an actual extra month worth of polishing going into the game, fixing framerates, loadtimes and whatnot.
