If you thought the Duke Nukem Forever saga was over when 3D Realms and Take-Two settled their legal differences, you were (possibly) wrong. Kotaku is reporting that a build of the fabled shooter is now in Gearbox Software's hands, and the full game will eventually come to market.

Sounds like a long shot--and it feels like it is, considering this is DNF we're talking about, a game that has been in development for over a decade--but apparently this rumor is crashing against some sort of truth. Speaking with Kotaku, Gearbox head honcho Randy Pitchford said that he would be able to "clarify" (the pub's words) this alleged involvement at PAX West in Seattle. He declined direct comment.

I would love the game to just be about the release of itself, and duke being fed up with all the bullshit. Or have each level of the game look and play differant with various assets from all the differant incarnations

man, what is up with gearbox and game development rumors.

Even if Gearbox ends up finishing and releasing the game. Wouldn't you always be curious to know if that's how 3DRealms wanted the game to be? Would you be satisfied knowing that the game might have been different if 3DRealms had finished it?

I will not belive this until I have it in my hands, installed it, and played a second of it. Then, maybe, but just maybe, I will belive it, I might need some pinching first in case it is nothing but a dream.

I can only imagine the legal wrangling that's involved in doing an IP transfer and development pick-up like this. Hopefully if it is real, Gearbox is given the time to make it really awesome.

Id rather see a new borderlands, aliens colonial marines and even a new Brothers in Arms before id pay for that game.

Well, I'm way more interested in a resurrected Duke Nukem Forever than I am in yet another mediocre Aliens game, gotta say.

Glad to hear DNF might see the light of day, but it breaks my heart that such a horrible development house like Gearbox has to be the one to get their hands it. After the travesty that was Borderlands on the PC I have zero faith in their ability to make a game that is not broken and dead on arrival.

Could I request them to fix The Saboteur. I loved that game.

This would be good. A studio that isn't run by a bunch of scam artists making the game? Colour me interested.
