    Duke Nukem Forever

Game » consists of 14 releases. Released Jun 14, 2011

After approximately fourteen years of development, the heavily infamous sequel to Duke Nukem 3D was finally released, in which the macho Duke must damper yet another alien invasion.

The (soon to be, I think) infamous rape scene.

Apparently there is a rape scene in Duke Nukem Forever, I assume it's on the alien ship/base/whatever, probably more towards the end of the game. To give some perspective, here is a quote from a review I was reading, and for the sake of discussion, the quote will remain anonymous (to avoid a derailing):

One level in particular takes place in an alien nest where Earth's women are being inseminated by giant penises. The women writhe and moan in a fairly humiliating fashion, and they regularly sob with no small amount of implied misery. In essence, the women look like they're getting raped. In fact, they are. That's the big joke of the level. The aliens are raping the women to create babies. Now, I'm a fan of offensive humor, but the "joke" in this level is so morbidly presented, so dark and downright unsettling, that I simply do not know if Gearbox intends for us to laugh or to throw up. I certainly found I was in danger of doing the latter over the former.

By the time Duke Nukem finally makes a "You're fucked," joke, which he makes in front of two girls who are about to die in the process of getting sexually assaulted, Duke does not come across as cool, witty or likable in the least. He comes across as a vile, callous, thoroughly detestable psychopath.

It's not impossible to make an alien rape joke amusing if you're clever enough, but the fact that nobody making this game actually bothered to try is what really concerns me. According to Gearbox, seeing women tortured was funny enough. According to common sense, it really, really wasn't.

I presented the entire rundown, and not just snippets as I wanted people to read the entire entry with context.

This was my fear with Duke Nukem Forever at some point. I understand Duke's brand of humor, but I don't remember rape jokes being cool. To give things a slight perspective, in Duke Nukem 3D, when you would shoot a girl who's stuck in a pod, it would spawn three or four aliens telling you, "hey guess what? That's not cool. Don't do that again." The pods were just where the girls were being held, like a prison cell.

Here, it just sounds tasteless and morbid, and I might skip out on DNF because making fun of rape in any fashion, or at least in such a morbid way as it seems, is downright offensive.

For those of you who have played through the game, what did you think when you saw this? Was it relatively harmless, or was it tasteless?

Please be careful with spoilers in the thread titles...

I'm sure this will be an intense and important discussion, but let us play the game first.

Let me know the next time a blockbuster movie has women writhing in pain while being raped and then the protagonist cracks a one-liner about it.

Like the reviewer, I'm not beyond crude humor, but even in crude humor there is a line between funny and creepy/tasteless.

EDIT: I should add that I haven't played the game myself, but if this description is accurate, then my statement stands.

Think this is all in the quicklook.  Doesn't seem like they show the rape, just....  they explode and a bunch of baby aliens come out.

Sure rape, genocide, brutal murders. It's all in real life. That doesn't mean I want it in my entertainment. Personally, this makes me want to skip the game.

They are talking about the part in the underground part of the game, its in the quicklook they just put up. Go watch it and make up your mind. Hmm I don't know I agree its a whole giant rape scene, but everyone is going to interrupt it how they want.

There's no rape. It's just women attached to ceilings and walls in dark areas that moan and cry because they're harboring aliens inside them. Same concept as Alien.

This post might contain spoilers, but I've been as general as possible.

While normally I'm not really for faux moral outrage, I still think that the way this scene was presented was kind of troubling. I mean, alien impregnation has been a long standing trope in the "body-horror" genre as you all know from movies like Alien. I think the thing that makes these scenes stand out in particular is the way that the game makes them out to be entirely sexual. Duke even runs into two girls who apologize for having sex with / being impregnated by the aliens and putting on weight before they explode. The problem also being that Duke's response doesn't seem typical of his character - instead of reacting with any kind of anger, as one would expect from Duke (who loves chicks, as is the point of the whole game), we get some shitty pun about how they're "fucked."

All in all, it's not as horrible a scene as Sterling makes it out to be but it still troubled me.

I can see how you could interpret that as rape, the women are naked and their lower bodies are covered in what look like tentacles. During the entire time they are moaning in pain and agony.

Now if this game was a serious thriller, fine. But I wouldn't expect something like that what is supposed to be a "funny" game. I found the scene in the QL nauseating...

If the quicklook is actually the part the reviewer is talking about, he made a little bit of his story up. Maybe there still are giant inseminating penises in the game, but I saw none when Jeff played. Don't you think Jeff would have mentioned something about that since he beat the game?

Its Duke Nukem, its meant to be offending.
If anyone finds anything in Duke Nukem offending, their own fault.
Its like watching South Park and complaining its vulgar or gross.

    Its the bloody point.
    Don't like it, don't watch/play/listen/read/whatever to it.

This has nothing to do with me being a woman, just insane that someone could get through most of DNF and then near the end see that scene and be offended.

Being intentionally offensive doesn't stop it from being offensive.

Fact is, there is a.) a joke about rape "Looks like you're ... fucked." and b.) has the victims apologise for being raped.

I always got the impression that this game was just.. disgusting. Ever since one of the first things I heard about it was the discussion on the Bombcast about interactive feces, I kind of half-seriously think only psychos could legitimately find that game funny at all. Being sexist and bombastic and rude is one thing, but this game just seems to take it to a whole 'nother, completely unnecessary, level.

As long as it's rated appropriately for adults this shouldn't be a discussion at all. Making it into a talking point just boosts sales and makes kids more likely to want to play it, it's counter productive, more than it deserves and akin to giving attention to a child that's acting up.

Is Gearbox really to blame?  I assume their involvement was taking what they got from 3D Realms and trying to piece that together into a game that can be played.    What exactly did Gearbox do in terms of story and level design?  Judging by what I have seen of the game it looks like they just went around and made everything look like shiny plastic.  I assume it was rated by the ERSB.  Who did not seem to think it needed an AO rating.

Having seen the quick look it seems reminiscent of Aliens with people attached to the hives waiting to have xenomorphs burst out of their chest.  Only replace Xenomorphs and Space Colonist with brain spiders and naked chicks.  Though I couldn't see your giant penises but that might of been because it was dark  in the quick look.

I meant more along the lines of this becoming some big debate about videogames. I just don't think a game that sets out to push peoples buttons should be given the satisfaction of being discussed in such a way.

It always seems that there can be violence galore in games/tv/movies and no one blinks an eye. Toss in something sexual in nature and everyone loses their shit. I'm sure said scene isn't pleasant, but me blowing a guys brains out at point blank range is?

I think there's a difference between something sexual in nature (i.e. nudity in Heavy Rain or sex scenes in Mass Effect) and what some people here and Jim Sterling are perceiving as glorified rape.

Anyone else found the title immediately confusing?

The (soon to be, I think) infamous rape scene.

Since Infamous 2 is coming out now, I though that this was refering to a rape scene in Infamous 2, before I saw that it was attached to DNF.

The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife , is an erotic woodcut of the ukiyo-e genre by the Japanese artist Hokusai, first published in 1814.

One of the reasons why I love the Japanese.

After watching the QL I think this game is very misogynistic. The area with the crying, naked women(who I guess are the ones getting raped?) and then killed my Duke is fucking disturbing. I'm fine with ANYTHING in a game but that really came off as wrong.

Dude's making shit up. The scene where the twins get 'sexually assaulted' is in the Quick Look, so there's some evidence that he's wrong. They just stand there and then explode.

And really, Alien is a movie about a little creature that latches onto your face, sticks it's dick down your mouth and then shoots semen into your stomache until it's satisfied and dies, wherein babies will burst out your stomache.

I see no difference in what that critically acclaimed, cult status film does and what the women in this mediocre game are subjected to. I hope that guy never watches Alien, he might actually throw up.

Jim Sterling is actually a big Alien fan.

The difference is that in Alien it's done for horror. In DNF they use it as a joke.

I don't see why a poor joke would cause him to want to throw up. If he didn't expect terrible jokes about women, he really shouldn't have bought that game. I mean, even in the part where he said the twins were sexually assaulted, they straught up say "It was our first time with an alien!" so I'm not seeing where this horrible rape comes from. Slutty chicks bangs an alien and explodes, that's Duke Nukem for you. Not funny, but it's not disgusting rape.

I don't really see what's so self righteous about wanting to discuss an event in a videogame that some might find offensive.

Nor do I. It is worthy of some discussion at some level. Granted, the game is dated in almost every fashion but that scene is just wrong. This isn't about people having weak constitutions when they get offended. Some things just aren't funny.
