After approximately fourteen years of development, the heavily infamous sequel to Duke Nukem 3D was finally released, in which the macho Duke must damper yet another alien invasion.
This Vegas Duke Nukem promo event - good or bad for gaming?
So in Las Vegas there's a Duke Nukem Forever promo event being held at a strip club renamed TITTY CITY. There's demo kiosks set up inside an actual real strip club, girls in school uniforms and general stuff that a dude like Duke Nukem would approve of. Here's some photos that have emerged on Twitter.
I understand it needs to be in theme with the game, but I personally feel Duke Nukem as a character to be way-beyond-irrelevant in 2011 and can't wait until the game is released so we can finally forget about it. This whole event smacks of dumb and just keeps gaming squarely in the corner of the lonely-social-outcast-gamer-who-has-never-had-a-girlfriend-damn-what-a-loser-amirite?
I'm with you. I don't think games like these make "gamers" look good. I'm not saying they shouldn't be made, there is a place for dumb action, but we (collective we) shouldn't be pushing this sort of stuff into the eyes of the public. It's begining to be all they see (thank you Spike TV).
I don't mind it at all the name of the strip club is kinda funny. It sounds like a strip club from a bad action flick.I also think the whole style of Duke is played out. That reminds me my buddies birthday is tomorrow I think I am going to take him to Baby Dolls and get a sacrifice. I wouldn't be embarassed to go as a game journalist. I am a grown ass man and can go to a strip club if I damn well please lol. The game journalist out there who are getting all bent out of shape about this are some damn hypocrites. Some of them should get off there high horse and go back and listen to some of the sick and sad things they said on some of their podcast. A lot of that stuff is worse than standing around in strip club for a dang game. Quit crying take your ass there check out the game and before you leave make it rain.
Gaming is not a monolith. One game does not somehow destroy the reputation of gamers everywhere. Fox News may try, but it never sticks outside of the market that thinks that way anyway.
It doesn't matter, and besides, there's nothing wrong with any of this. I say lighten up and get on down to TITTAY CITAY! YEAH! MOTOR BOAT!

You shouldn't care what other people think of your hobby.

Considering I've been trying to explain what video games are actually all about to people who's base knowledge is GRAND THEFT AUTO HOOKER MURDER SIMULATOR MASS EFFECT SEXBOX for most of my life, then yeah, I care what people think. Especially when they're wrong. Everything about Duke Nukem don't help.
Maybe this specific event isn't so bad, but I am getting a little sick of hearing games being praised for being stupid.
Duke Nukem is pretty much the only game that could get away with this. Normally I would roll my eyes at such a thing, but its Duke. Big, dumb, stupid, and crass as hell are the words I would use to describe the series, so it makes sense that those are the exact words I'd use to describe this press event. It fits. In fact, anything less than this just wouldn't seem right.
Besides, this game has been in production for like a decade now, so I'm gonna' say that at this point the promotion campaign can do whatever the fuck it wants.
I don't think it really affects anything one way or the other.
It's a Duke Nukem game. This doesn't seem out of line in terms of what you would do to promote a Duke Nukem game.
Some people are going to like it, a vocal minority will decry it and the vast majority are going to be totally indifferent to it.
" @extremeradical said:No, I'm totally alright with this. It's the fact that anyone who has ever watched G4 or Spike's video game programming probably thinks we're introverted man-children." This event specifically might not be hurting our reputation, but the larger attitude that it is indicative of is. "What, that strip clubs are fucking awesome? Are you like, 80? "
But at least things like this send a message that video games aren't just aimed at children.

Duke Nukem is irrelevant much in the way that several historic events are: They paved a way forward, but they are out of place today. Forever is a crazy product being released for the FUCK OF IT, and because there are people who genuinely have good memories of The King. I'm a mushy poet, a writer, a romantic. Nothing is sexier to me than a girl who can spit out words that make my head spin. And yet I still have a deep love for the series. It introduced me to gaming at way too young an age, and it was actually Duke Nukem that helped me over come my night terrors. It's definitely irrelevant, stupid, and immature. But it's not supposed to be anything but that. And that isn't a defense of the game by any stretch of the imagination. But it might help it's case a little.
Would you rather Gear Box had the event at some posh modern art gallery and had a wine tasting followed by an epic poem about the struggles of the modern African American woman as performed by Maya Angelou ?
Press events are retarded. Overreacting to them is even more retarded. These events are made for adult journalists to drank and eat en masse.
I think "good for gaming" is a dumb argument; too often gamers feel like there needs to be a central "movement" incorporating devs and gamers in order for gaming to be "successful", but it's a business. Whether or not this is a good move for Duke Nukem is one thing, but this has no impact on other games.
" @Napalm said:Anyone who has seen a Call of Duty game (read, everyone) knows this much. Also, I don't give a shit whether or not old people think that I'm a man-child. I'm not emotionally sensitive enough to care, and they can't stop me from playing anyway." @extremeradical said:No, I'm totally alright with this. Also, titties.
this is why most girls / women think gaming is moronic or stupid. I think this really doesn't help people see gaming as a legitimate art form like movies, books or music. I hope it's an o.k. game so the developer won't be embarrassed . from what i have seen i hope it is forgot about fast because it looks like an ok budget game, not a c o d, halo, or battlefield.
Eh, it's goofy move but I like that they are sticking to their guns and keeping the theme of "Duke" constant.
Pro-tip, when trying to explain video games to someone. Dont. Give them some games to try out, that you think the person may enjoy. Take a look at there personalty. There are games out there for EVERYONE, just have to find the right game to open the door for a new player. Big hooks are Sims, Burnout games, Batman AA, Ico, Pokemon (yes....i said it) most puzzle quests, hell mmos are a great jumping point to. Just dont tell them its a mmo, and for the love of god stay away from WoW, chances are they know about it and only hear bad things.
Wii games are good to try and get people playing games, i got a whole family who never played games hooked by showing them Wii sports, i got them a wii for xmas, a few months later i come back to visit, and they have a pile of all sorts of games, Zelda, House of the Dead, Smash Bros, mario, ext.
Games are not somthing you can explain. Its something people have to play and understand for them self.
And dont press it on people. If they hear bad stuff about games, tell them its not true and most of it is bullshit. After you say that dont say anything more, if they happen to give you a strange look and ask YOU to explain, then they hare interested and will listen to you. And thats someone who may try games you suggest.
Most people hate on stuff just to hate, and you trying to defend something they are chosing to hate on for that given week, is pointless.
