So what are your favorite character builds for Dungeons of Dredmor so far? Of course, besides the ever popular Random set. It can either be a 'for fun' themed set that probably will get slaughtered, or a set you've actually found really effective to get deep down in the dungeon with.

So far, my most successful build has been McViking. Using Axe Mastery, Dual Wielding, Berserking, Mastery of Armour, Perception, Viking Magic, and Smithing.

He basically becomes stronger and more durable every time he gets hit, and can just wade through monster zoos pretty fast. The only big downside is that it's pretty boring to play, with almost all passive abilities. Very durable and kills quickly, but really doesn't do much besides hack folks up over and over.

    Currently, I'm using:

    • Maces
    • Golemancy
    • Mathemagic
    • Promethean
    • Smithing
    • Assassination
It's not the best build; I was still experimenting with stuff when I created him. Regardless, I would strongly recommend Promethean and Maths to anyone. Even though they patched the game to make Obvious Fireball weaker - it's still a great spell and teleportation is incredibly helpful for getting out of some sticky situations.

Promethean (Obvious Fireball) + maxed Blood Magic is pretty much the win button.

Still haven't managed to get past the fourth floor cause I'm stupid and careless but I've taken out 100+ zoos in a matter of moments.  Haven't even needed to level anything else up, but I've been using Magic Training for the power boost and Burglary, Archaeology & Perception for added survival.  Acid traps and the rare named mob in the middle of a zoo with a ranged attack have been my only nemeses so far.

Combine that with maxed Ley lines and you're pretty much unstoppable.

The one that I've gone furthest with so far was

    Swords
    Berserker Rage
    Dual Wielding
    Master of Arms
    Assassination
    Smithing
and something else I can't remember...

The only reason I died was because of a strong poison I didn't realize had affected me.  I've mostly just been playing around for fun though, and only slightly dabbled in magic.

My current and most successful build is:

    Sword

    Shield

    Crossbow

    Berserker Rage

    Alchemy

    Smithing

    Tinkering

I've been putting most of my points into the sword skills.

The build I had turned out pretty good. Unarmed Combat Berserker Rage Artful Dodger Burglary Fungal Arts Vampirism Fleshsmithing Pretty kickass kung-fu vampire. Beserker, Fungal, and Vampirism add bonuses to melee, and Fleshsmithing and Fungal give ways to heal outside Vampirism.

Alchemy is great but only if you use a recipe wiki. The bookcases give way too many recipes for the wrong skills.

Maxed alchemy can net infinite mana from booze, hundreds of healing and mana pots, plus an 8 star staff and 5 star orb and invisibility potions for running.

Worked great for me until floor 5 when the game crashed and I lost everything.

Haven't found a favorite one yet. But i keep sticking with warrior like skills so far. Also question. How the hell does that Archaeology skill work, the thing about getting XP for the item, if any one knows please tell me how to use it, i tried it out, but never found out how to actually do it.

Xaxor IV is the best I've had so far.  I think I got him to either the 5th or 6th floor with 142820pts after he died so I have no clue if that's impressive at all, but he was:

    Axes
    Shield Bearer
    Berzerker Rage
    Master of Arms
    Deadshot
    Assassination
    Smithing

It was boss cus you just found a chokepoint and kinda sat there forever while just smacking whatever came in front of you and usually due to assassination they were always asleep or paralyzed.  But again I have no clue if that's good, but it was fun for me hah.

Just equip the skill and then right click on an item in your inventory. The item in question has to be an artefact though, not just any random item. Artefacts are items that have special names. The ones you get from the Anvil of Krong also work with this skill.

Thanks for the clarification. I must not have stumbled upon many of those artifacts. And i never tried it on the anvil items.

Just killed Dredmor 2 minutes ago with this build:

    Swords
    Dual wield
    Armor
    Vampirism
    Assassination
    Berzerker Rage
    Perception

I had about the best gear possible near the end. Clearing every floor helps including the zoos.

Unarmed (Use 2 shields. Don't have to worry about weapons)

    Vampirism

    Berserker

    Golemancy

Archaeology (The last few skills are fantastic, especially the one that lets you reuse the anvils, and with all the relic weapons you'll find that you don't need, you can donate them to a museum for faster leveling)

    Dodging

    Criticals

My best set, if I remember right, was: Unarmed, Archaeology, Arithmancy, Dodging, Deadshot, Promethian, and Burglary. I haven't had a chance to refine it too well, but it seemed pretty good, once I got the skills started, and I just began to steam roll through the levels (something that proved to be my downfall, when I advanced to the 5th floor a bit too early)

Is Vampirism really that good?  I get kinda paranoid at the thought of not being able to heal automatically outside of battle.

    My favorite set :

    Swords
    Axes
    Burglary
    Assassination

    Artful Dodger
    Master of Armors

    My latest is

    Unarmed
    Promethean
    Magic Training
    Blood Magic
    Ley Lines
    Fungal
    Alchemy

Unarmed and Ley Lines (and probably Magic Training too) are completely useless, so if/when I die, I'm gonna swap those out and take Archaeology or Tinkering and Perception to help with traps cause traps are a pain in the ass.  I read the next patch is going to be nerfing Obvious Fireball.  Hope the nerf isn't too bad cause that's practically the only thing I use.

    Mathemagic (TWEED!)

    Viking Wizardry

@Demoskinos: It's really great.  It's a little tedious now the way you have to keep summoning and planting spores, but this is apparently being addressed in the next patch.  It gives you a literal endless supply of all the game's mushrooms.  http://www.dredmorwiki.com/wiki/Mushrooms   I use it primarily for the HP and MP healing shrooms to supplement/conserve potions I make with alchemy (mostly due to limited rust).  The buffing ones are pretty useful too, especially if you're a melee character, but as a mage I rarely get hit so I don't bother with them much.

It also has access to a couple of pets that are kind of weak compared to the fire/golem pets, but they are mana free to cast and can be used to draw aggro off of you, which can be very helpful.

Fungal is one of the few skills (along with Archaeology IMO) that's useful for any class/setup.

I'm currently using the following Build to beat that Game on "going rouge" + Permadeath and am doing pretty good so far:

    • Staves
    • Alchemy
    • Ley Lines
    • Necronomiconomics
    • Magic Training
    • Blood Magic
    • Archeology

The Mana you get from Ley Lines and Blood Magic should be used to Spam the 2nd Skill in Necro "Nightmare Curse".

Use Eldritch Inhabitation for Monster Zoos or large packs.

My last build, and the was I got more points before dying, was:

    • Axe
    • Dual Wielding
    • Artful Dodger
    • Burglary
    • Assassination
    • Smithing
    • Tinkering
I believe that "Tinkering" and "Burglary" are pretty much obligatory, as the first one allows you to disarm pretty much every trap you find and the other gives you the ability to create picklocks to open doors and chests, giving extra XP.  "Smithing" is only recomended if you use a weapon, otherwise I would go with a defensive skill here. "Assassination" is great because of the high critical bonus it gives and the several stunning effects. I also found that is much better to get "Dual Wielding" instead of a defensive skill because you will rarely want to level up a defensive skill, while "Dual Wielding" allows you from the start to double your attack damage. The only skill I didn't like was "Artful Dodger", and I am thinking of changing it for "Archery".

@antoniocmf: IMO, it's even more useful for a warrior, since it offers a lot of utility, which warriors don't typically have and it's all mana free, so you can keep your Gargle Blaster buff up at all times.  When your primary function is to just stand in one place and whack on bad guys, it seems like the more buffs you can have on you the better and if you stack all the available buffing shrooms, you can turn yourself into a really nasty tank.

I got to level 5 and got cornered in a zoo with a build that was

    Blood Magic
    Promethean Magic
    Swords
    Master of Arms
    Wands
    Assassination
    Necromancy

That was probably the most fun I had in the game.  The basic necromancy spell is a little too punishing, though, imo.
