He explained why bad news makes a lot of views, and he told the press, "You're welcome."
I would say that constitutes as a joke

The 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) took place at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California on June 7-9.
Jack Tretton made a joke about the PSN outage
I'm glad Sony thought it was so humorous to make a joke about. I'm surprised I'm not seeing more people bring it up.
I think it was a pretty dick thing to do, implying that people somehow made a bigger deal out of it than it actually was, but I'm not sure Tretton has a mode other than 'asshole'.
He started off with a short, small joke for the press (break that tension). Then he went into a long apology to everyone.

Tell GioVANNI to give you two of the three seconds he owes me.
You guys who are saying 'he's an asshole' and 'what a dick' don't seem to know what you're talking about...
The joke wasn't belittling nor was it in bad taste. Why do you think the BP oil spill got press for months? Tsunamis, earthquakes, etc. The reality is that bad situations are big news, and the way they get resolved or at least start to get reconstructed is deftly interesting to people. It's intrinsic in our nature, we care when something bad happens and we want to see how it'll get better. That's what Tretton was calling attention to in a light-hearted way, it wasn't asshole-ish at all.
For the record, I'm not saying the PSN outage is as important as a tsunami or oil spills, just an analogy.
Well, I didn't expect a stand-up comedy routine by Eddie Griffin, but the small joke was appreciated.
@Make_Me_Mad said:The apology honestly struck me as insincere, coming after the joke about the press. I'd never seen Tretton before that conference, so it's not like I've got a distaste for the man or anything, but the whole time it came off (to me) as more of a dig at people who asked for an apology than a real one.I think it was a pretty dick thing to do, implying that people somehow made a bigger deal out of it than it actually was, but I'm not sure Tretton has a mode other than 'asshole'.did you miss the long apology? it was pretty long.
@Bassman2112:
I understand that big events like this get a lot of publicity, but the way he joked about it seemed like more of a "You guys just needed something to talk about, and this wasn't a big deal until you made it one" kind of statement. Again, could be wrong, but it really didn't seem like admitting that they made serious mistakes, which is what a lot of people were looking for.
Considering Jack made a small joke and then made a personal apology (which he stated on GT interview was not scripted) deserves respect from me. What he gave us was far better then the shit-tastic show Microsoft gave us, sadly they didn't even say sorry for such a kiddie on rails Kinect show that it felt like a slap in the face to the hardcore community. So, yeah..good job Jack Tretton on the Sony show..I know where my money is going next 12months!

Holy crap, how could he be so insensitive? That's the most disgusting thing I've ever heard anyone say I'll never buy a sony product again.
JK, nobody cares.

Now you owe 4 seconds total. You are pushing it, sir!
Fine, do you have a change for a minute?
I think it was a pretty dick thing to do, implying that people somehow made a bigger deal out of it than it actually was, but I'm not sure Tretton has a mode other than 'asshole'.Why? No information was leaked at the time it happened but all the news sites acted like it did. It was just that they were hacked and didn't know what happened. The exact same thing happened to Nintendo a few weeks ago and they just admitted to it last Sunday, yet no one is talking about it. Nintendo does the exact same thing and gets a free pass, yet when it happened to Sony every dam news site on the planet went ape shit.
@Make_Me_Mad said:It was mostly that no information was taken or endangered in the attack on Nintendo, going by the way this and other news stories talk about it. Even the group responsible for the hacking admitted that the security was much better on Nintendo's end, and that the method they had used wouldn't work now that it had been fixed. Sony got hacked, realized that people's information might have been in danger, and then didn't tell anyone before being hacked again multiple times. Lackluster security aside, waiting when you even think someone's credit card information was stolen isn't good.I think it was a pretty dick thing to do, implying that people somehow made a bigger deal out of it than it actually was, but I'm not sure Tretton has a mode other than 'asshole'.Why?
