A 4X turn-based strategy game. Set to release sometime in 2010. Will feature an extensive single player campaign.

Elemental: War of Magic doesn't just stop at "run of the mill 4X." It's developers have so much more in store for it. They have described it as a mix of 4X and RPG games. Some notable features include being able to hand design every unit you make and take on quests with your sovereign and hero units. They like to describe the world as a D&D game where you explore the world as the sovereign of a nation and not a party of adventurers. At the beginning of a game the world is dead and you, as a Channeler and leader of a new nation, slowly bring it back to life, as do your opponents: competing channelers. (Check out the Lore section of the Official Site below for the whole story.) Because you are influencing the game world, it is important for the creators that you are immersed in and connected with your world. Not only can you zoom in from an over-arching cloth map, but you name the rivers, swaps and mountains that your left over magic creates.

Sovereign
According to the games lore, you are a Channeler, a being able to harness the leftover magic from the conflict that has destroyed the world. As you start the game you choose how this magic is distributed. One path is to save up your power to perform amazing magical feats, such as raising volcanoes under enemy capitols, and letting your people and cities fend for themselves. Or, you can sacrifice your power to build a robust and powerful empire to wield your power for you.

Gameplay
All of your units must be built piece by piece. A simple swordsman for example would require a resource going to a city to be transformed into a sword. That sword would then need to make its way to whatever city can train a swordsman. Then, when all the pieces are together a set amount of time would have to pass to train the unit (consuming population) and then the unit would come into play. If you wanted to add armor or any accessories you would have to manufacture and transport those as well. But don't worry, almost all micro-management functions of the game will be able to be automated, so once you get going making units will be as easy as opening up a character screen and dragging equipment onto your unit as you would in any RPG.

Actual battle between armies is said to be similar to the Total War franchise. Also, you'll be able to view and command the armies from all the way zoomed out or way up close on the action. At this stage, it sounds similar to the R.U.S.E. engine. And because this tactical view scaling (in the 4X and RTS aspects) is so robust, and because micro management will be largely automated, the maps are going to be able to be very large. Pictures on the Official Site show the largest default map for Elemental (224x160 tiles) to be at least four times larger than the Civ4 default largest map (104x64 tiles). There will also be options for very small maps such as the "Wee" sized map.

According to the game's official site, anyone who pre-orders Elemental from that site will be allowed to play beta versions of the game via Stardock's Impulse service.
