A new game design buzz word, the concept that by defining a series of simple rules within the game, these rules will combine to create exciting and unpredictable gameplay.  Two rules in a first person shooter might be that the rocket launcher will send your enemies flying and that any object that hits an enemy at high velocity will cause him to take damage. Where emergence comes in is if you shoot enemy A with a rocket launcher, and he is flung so fast that he hits enemy B, that enemy A kills enemy B indirectly. Despite not being specifically designed or programmed, because of emergence, this becomes a possibility.
