Eric Cartman has a dark personality which often hints towards some sort of mental problems that he may be experiencing. He also seems to take pleasure from the sadness, misfortune of others and never really shows empathy. However, Cartman does not seem himself as a bad guy, in fact he usually doesn't care what he's doing as long as it helps him get ahead of others. It also seems like Cartman is motivated to be as superior to the people around him as possible.
Cartman is what you could describe as a natural leader, he possesses skills that help him gain control of people and turn them against each other. He utilizes his public speaking skills to easily gain control of large groups because he is aware of how to take advantage of a mob's way of thinking and he uses these skills to complete his goals.
The only friend that Cartman seems to have is his stuffed frog, Clide. Most of the characters within the series tolerate his presence at best as a nuisance and at worst as a diabolical menace. He usually associates himself with Kenny, Kyle, and Stan, mostly because they have put up with him so long that they are used to it. He holds a particularly strong hatred of Kyle for no specific reason other than that he is Jewish. This has led to many altercations between the two, involving many fights and scheming back forth to undo the others plans. Cartman has lost most of the fights between the two.
Eric's "father" is Liane Cartman, a promiscuous and wholly amoral hermaphrodite. It has not been revealed since the series inception who Cartman's mother is, although up until the episode entitled Cartman's Mom is Still a Dirty Slut, it was assumed that Liane Cartman was his mother until she revealed that she was a hermaphrodite, and therefore, unable to have children.
Eric Cartman had at one time seen Mel Gibson as some sort of god-like entity.
He would pray to a movie poster of Mel Gibson in Braveheart and believed himself some sort of prophet for him. He also was the President of the Mel Gibson fan club. This utter devotion to Mel Gibson led Cartman to attempt to exterminate all of the Jewish population of South Park after seeing the movie The Passion of the Christ, using the popularity of the movie to gain support from uninformed and naive Christians that had seen the film. It is uncertain whether he still holds these beliefs towards Mel Gibson, as at the end of the episode Passion of the Jew, Mel Gibson proceeds to shit all over Cartman's face.
Cartman has tried on numerous occasions to make one million dollars even succeeding in some cases but only temporarily. Some of the schemes to gain one million dollars include becoming a pseudo sensationalist minister to make money through "putting a dol-lah in the box-ah", forming a boy band called Fingerbang, filming the Mexican staring frog of Southern Sri Lanka, among many others. He once successful in getting one million dollars in one episode where he was left the money by a relative that he had charmed at the end of her life. He chose to spend the money buying a theme park and using it to mock other people that were not able to use it. This backfired when he did not file income tax on the earnings for the park and had his funds possessed by the IRS after he had already sold the park back to the original owner.
