Winter Brawl 7 (Feb 23rd - 24th) Preview & more FGC & EVO News!

Posted by FLStyle (4511 posts) -

The Road to EVO 2013 continues with Winter Brawl 7, brought to you by Big E Gaming, in Philadelphia from the 23rd to the 24th of February.

This event was a late addition to the Road to EVO this year, with South California and North California Regionals both getting an official Road to EVO spot, as well as two of the biggest events of the year, UFGT9 (Chicago) and CEO 2013 (Orlando). The North East community of the USA, where some of the planet's most well-known fighting game names from New York and New Jersey (IFC Yipes, Sanford Kelly, Chris G, LI Joe, Team Spooky) are from, were seemingly a casualty of EVO's plans to avoid too many events with too many seeding points up for grabs (which lead to cases of seeded players playing fellow seeded players in the first rounds at EVO 2012).

But the North East scene rallied, Winter Brawl 7 has been added and it looks like a great event to watch this weekend.

Now that we know the 8 games at EVO, they will all be present at Winter Brawl, including the people's choice, Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Korea's EVO 2012 & Capcom 25th Anniversary Champion for both SSFIV and SFxT, Infiltration, leaves his sponsorship team Western Wolves

The best player on the planet is officially a free agent after he announced his departure from the fighting game division (which has a partnership with Mad Catz) of Western Wolves.

"I am no longer part of Western Wolves, but I had an unforgettable year in 2012 and I wish them the best in the future. Thank you everyone!"

https://twitter.com/Infiltration/status/304670432848670720

No-one knows whether this is merely a formality before some else announces that they've signed him or that he's flying solo for now, but I doubt he'll be without a team for long. Not that he would need to a team to pay to go to any tournaments after dominating all the high profile tournaments last year.

Dieminion posts his early thoughts on the Street Fighter X Tekken version. 2013 Tier List

Disappointed to see Hugo all the way at the bottom, he actually seemed useful for ending combos when SFxT was first released.

Sega Cup 2013 - April 20, 2013

Sega is attempting to push Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown, even if no-one else seems interested. $16,000 in prizes will be up for the 128 entrants in April -

1 $3,000.00

2 $2,000.00

3 $1,600.00

4 $1,400.00

5 $1,100.00

6 $1,100.00

7 $900.00

8 $900.00

Japan's EVO 2011 Street Fighter champion and resident Virtua Fighter legend Fuudo will immediately be labelled as the favourite to win this event. Justin Wong, still part of Evil Geniuses, has announced his entry into the event, giving it some much needed star power.

On a personal note I applaud Sega on the winning structure they're using, looks like event 8th place will make a decent amount of money.

That's all folks!

Despite embedding the video at the top the new Giant Bomb has stopped me from embedding anymore, otherwise I would've posted some more interesting stuff, ah well. Hopefully that'll be fixed for the next blog.

Wait, Sega's putting up a $16K pot? If it was that easy maybe I should've kept practicing my Lau on VF5FS. Stupid paid work and social obligations and newer games distracting me from possible e-fame.

You'll never be a successful eSportsman like that!

Thanks FLStyle! I enjoy reading your write-ups to these fighting game tournament events.

I'll be cheering for my good friend Foo, who's competing in three games at Winter Brawl (KoF13, UMvC3, SFxT 2013).

@infinitespark: No problem, I'll keep an eye out for him in case he pops up on the stream.

sfxt was HYPE

#14 Posted by FLStyle (4511 posts) -

SFxT ver. 2013 is no joke congrats to Dieminion beating Ricky Ortiz in the GF.

AE 2012 is up next, UMvC3 will end the night.

#15 Posted by Example1013 (4833 posts) -

the ae finals were not hype. The rest of top 4 was crazy though.

Marvel time!

Man, every time I decide to watch one of these I feel like I need a brush up on the terms being used. As always, thanks to @FLStyle for making me aware of these things even though I don't watch them all.

@negativecero: No problem, plenty more coming up between now and EVO in July if you're ever in the mood for tuning in again.

That was a heart breaker. Good stuff to Chris G. I wonder if he has Firebrand tech vs Vergil he never got to showcase.

Maybe so!

Winter Brawl 7 was a great success, thanks for tuning in.

I appreciate that SFxT is better to play now, but I still can't stand watching it. Rufus continues to place top of my "Most hated characters to watch in any game. Ever." list.

I do wonder if Chris G had new Firebrand tech, thought Vergil v Vergil would be in PR Rog's favour, or he just wanted to show he could win with basically 2 characters. The way he tagged FB in specifically against Vergil makes me think he might have something.

I was thinking the same thing about Firebrand. I was hoping for him to showcase something that would made the crowd go nuts. Never happened that way sadly.

As somebody who's played Firebrand since UMvC3's launch, his plan was probably "get Firebrand killed so Morrigan/Doom can have X-Factor level 2." And that makes me sad :(

SFxT finals were great. Dieminion taking it over Ricky after all the shit West Coast talked about the East Coast in this game was amazing, and he did it with two Tekken characters too. What happened to "East coast can only win with SF characters," guys?

I hear ya. I wish Team EG would just drop him.

SFxT and DoA5 had some good grand finals, and the rest had some really good matches in their respective top 8s. Also, I don't think PR Rog should've ragequit at the end; even if the stakes were against him, what would've happened if he had done that in his match with Yipes? His earlier ragequit was hilarious though.

@dolphinbutter: Yeah, one Rufus might be fine. But we always get mirror matches between Justin and Ricky, and then he's in cross Tekken as well. I think Rog quit because he didn't think he'd win against Chris. He still needed another 5 wins to take the whole thing. The combo Yipes dropped was apparently a really finicky one anyway, and it was already 2-2.

I was thinking the same thing about Firebrand. I was hoping for him to showcase something that would made the crowd go nuts. Never happened that way sadly.

Yeah it sucked. Chris messed around with Firebrand a while back, so I thought he'd been playing him on the down low and found something out.

Despite my optimism, you're probably right on this one though.

Look on the bright side: Firebrand Majors won: 1 Zero majors won: 0

@flstyle: Thanks for keeping us up to date. I haven't been watching many weeklies, or keeping up with twitter so these always keep me from missing a big event.

@petiew: No problem, now that we're into the EVO season I should be doing several more before July.

So has anybody commented on Dieminion leaving Brokentier after winning one of the first real SFxT majors this weekend? He's now part of the VxG EMP crew. Again.

Thats like saying "sorry guys I don't want your steak I'd rather eat out of this dumpster again."

#31 Posted by FLStyle (4511 posts) -

@morbid_coffee: Haha yeah I just heard about this, if it gets him out to more venues then good for him, as long as it lasts at least before EMP dies again.
