Curve Kabooms Into 2D Action With Explodemon!

Posted by Brad (3334 posts) -
Curve Studios--makers of Sony's big-in-Europe Buzz! series--has thrown off the quiz-game yoke and is working on a new side-scrolling action game called Explodemon! set to hit PlayStation Network, PC, and WiiWare this year. I'll lean toward the PSN version, because:

  • The DualShock 3 has an excellent d-pad
  • It will look better than those other platforms, and
  • I'm really digging the hottest new trend of 2009, "Games on the PlayStation 3 I want to play."

Here's the trailer. Looks a hell of a lot like a Mega Man game, no? Where have you been with a proper high-def rendition of the Blue Bomber, Capcom? Curve is beating you to the punch! Except their little robot dude is red.

Here's the Curve sales pitch.

Explodemon! is a 2.5D action platform game with an explosive main character. Mixing classic platforming action – from classics such as Mario and MegaMan – with the refined contemporary gameplay of Halo and Half-Life 2, it brings old-school gameplay bang up to date. Coming from Curve’s deep-seated love of video game culture and history, Explodemon! is wrapped up as a loving homage to SNES-era Japanese action games.

I'm all for homages, the Super NES, Mario, Mega Man, and even Halo and Half-Life (?!)--but guys, Western developers shouldn't spell out the names of their games in Katakana. It just looks weird, and your game seems pretty neat without it.

suhweet!! More PSN games I want to play.

First thing I thought when I saw the character was Iron Man.

I wonder if Marvel is gonna sue them, probably not.

How do you even know they made different versions per platform for it to look better. And if they did, why the fuck would it look better on PS3 than PC? And lol @ the excellent d-pad. Maybe compared to the 360's...

#7 Posted by Crono (2709 posts) -

Yes, I too thought "Iron Man?" but with a "for kids?" twist.

#8 Posted by McQuinn (651 posts) -

Sweet a not megaman game.

#9 Posted by Brad (3334 posts) -

It will look better on my television than on my much smaller computer monitor, that's how.

"Use your imagination in the meantime"

Iunno about that one, imagination can be a dangerous thing.

im pretty sure its supposed to be read like EXplo-demon, not like exPLODE- eMON. think bomb-omb beast from hell, not anime electric mouse bomb. at the end of the trailer, the way they split it up by the exploding O in the graphic screams "DEMON" to me. i am much more inclined to like it if this is the naming convention.

Also, wasn't this an april fools gag? maybe that is why the trailer has disappeared from the 'netz...

I like having game names spelled in Katakana - I can read how to pronounce the name correctly. Without it, I could be saying ExlplodEEEEmon...

Agreed, Katakana looks weird from a western developer. I think the font of it just looks a bit too Windows-default-Japanese.

Muramasa pwns this to the moon and back.

Looks boring as heck

Exploding robots + Engrish = My interest.

#19 Posted by plumeria (70 posts) -

It looks pretty decent and fairly attractive to a casual gamer like myself. :o)

#20 Posted by OmegaPirate (5522 posts) -

Heh sweet! worth at least a try by the look of it :D

#21 Posted by churrific (486 posts) -

reminded me of an iron man/mega man mix

#22 Posted by Computerplayer1 (991 posts) -

Please be bringing it on.

#23 Posted by SuperfluousMoniker (2913 posts) -

Looks good in theory, but I'm not sure if an explosion around your character will work out well as a main attack. More 2d games are always good though. And yeah, guy looks like Megaman, Iron Man and Viewtiful Joe had a threesome and somehow produced offspring.

#24 Posted by theMcNasty (740 posts) -

Please be bringing it on.  I reduce you into brittleness fluid.

#25 Posted by StarFoxA (5165 posts) -

The gameplay reminds me of Astro Boy on the GBA.

#26 Posted by Wright (637 posts) -

is it a new digimon!?

#27 Posted by Geno (6477 posts) -

"Fugitive! Prepare to be short-circuited!"

"Please be bringing it on! I reduce you to brittleness fluid!"

I'm sold on this game.

#28 Posted by TobyD81 (1231 posts) -

Sweet, I'm always down with crazy new 2D-style game mechanics. But damn, that makes me want a new Mega Man that looks as good.

#29 Posted by artofwar420 (6312 posts) -

I was about to say a very terrorist oriented joke, but I'll refrain.

#30 Posted by AURON570 (1678 posts) -

it is pronounced explo-day-mon. looks like a chibi ironman.

#31 Posted by Dauragon (554 posts) -

Holy fuck. I need a ps3

#32 Posted by Captain_Fookup (1519 posts) -

Hah someone -1 Brad, the game looks alright for a PSN game.

#33 Posted by papercut (3557 posts) -

I totally thought from the picture that this was Ironman in LBP

#34 Posted by Diamond (8634 posts) -

Wow, when I first heard about this I didn't think much of it.  Just saw the video and it looks REALLY cool.  Now on my list.

#35 Posted by MrKlorox (11209 posts) -

Now they have some cool looking exclusives coming out on PS3, Sony needs to put the hardware in the right price range to get people to buy the games.

#36 Edited by MeatSim (10942 posts) -

Looks like Ironman with dwarfism.

#37 Posted by ThomasP (1661 posts) -

Half Ironman, half Mega Man.

#38 Posted by RomeoInc (53 posts) -

Heh, that looks like it could be pretty cool.
Speaking of Megaman, you should check out the megaman 2 rap, it's awesome!

#39 Posted by rpratts (76 posts) -

HMMM :\

#40 Posted by Coleslaw893 (412 posts) -

Looks awesome, can't wait to see how it turns out.

#41 Posted by cityofdis0 (105 posts) -

Looks like a fun game. Reminds me of those Ratchet and Clank mini games, the adventures of Cpt. Quark.

#42 Posted by SinGulaR (2394 posts) -

This looks fun.

#43 Posted by Scorched (691 posts) -

Can I catch all of the explodemons?

#44 Posted by squidracerX (786 posts) -

kinda goofy, but this game seems like it was copied by another downloadable game coming out on both platforms called 'Splosion Man.... both are 2.5D games that have you explode yourself, both downlaodable, and both coming out soon... this one looks better though. maybe it was coincidence, but this isn't that good of an idea to begin with so i assume someone copied someone else....

#45 Edited by Al3xand3r (7574 posts) -

Both games were first shown on the same day (now that's a coincidence), how could one copy the other? None of this looks like it was made in 5 minutes, heh. They also look nothing alike. Explodemon has a Mega Man parody look while Splosion Man has its own zany cartoon charm.

Brad, I 100% agree with that statement.  It's about fucking time Sony was getting it right yet again.
